There's something about musicians and vocalists hailing from Ireland that just rings true. Somehow the angst and restlessness of the Irish countryside infuses itself into the music. From Enya to the Pogues, the power of raw emotion is always just bubbling underneath. I can't put my finger on it, but it always moves me. Thanks for breaking it down so beautifully.
@thomasdequincey5811
@thomasdequincey5811 Год назад
With the Pogues I take your point, but I'm not so sure about Enya. When I hear 'Orinoco Flow' the first thing that comes to mind isn't "angst" or "raw emotion". You know, Van Morrison, U2, Stiff Little Fingers, The Undertones, Boomtown Rats, Rory Gallagher all fit your criteria better than Enya.

@@thomasdequincey5811 I would agree. Much of trad music also takes its cue from landscape and local style but Enya...nah, it's like being trapped under a duvet.

@@MrThebigredone Never understood the obsession with Luke - if you look at his music dynamically, he had two settings: off and shouting.

Hi Fil, it was dazzling to see one of my favorite songs (and one of my favorite performances of that song) broken down so well. My quibble is that you are too much in your head as a technically gifted musician and not addressing enough how the sound of this song matches the sense of what it's about. When we begin with Lisa, she's in the first bloom of love, where everything is fresh and bright and new and simple, and her image of her new love is pristine and faultless, even if their meeting circumstances are not optimal (raining, etc.). It's lovely, and her simple vocals (and the fairy-dance guitar accompaniment) perfectly reflect this. Then we switch to her new lover's perspective, and things are not so la-di-da. He sees this smitten girl headed straight for him, he knows he's far from the paragon of awesome that she thinks he is, and he's terrified. A hundred fears assault him at once, and quickly whirl up into a vortex, and his misperception of *her* misperception threatens to tear him to pieces. And he's trying to calm down, get past his momentary fever, but the thought, the melody line, that haunts him is different from hers, lurking there, ready to roar to madness as soon as he countenances his feelings again. It's a common trope that women overthink relationships and men underthink them. This song says, au contraire. Men can be mad geniuses of overthinking their relationships.

Wow, thank you for this truly outstanding analysis of one of my favourite songs from two of my favourite artists. The fact that they weren’t just collaborators but lovers and their own relationship was such a passionate but tumultuous one adds even more to the intensity of the song and each unique performance. I would be shocked if the lyrics and emotion that went into not only the writing of this song but the ever evolving performances of it weren’t greatly influenced, if not directly linked, to their relationship at the time. I’d say the same for most of the songs they did together.

If angels came to earth and sang they would sing like Lisa Hannigan. I saw these two years ago in concert and Lisa was phenomenal, such an emotive and beautiful voice, I was glued to the floor and the crowd was silent in awe of her singing.

Thank you Fil, I'm 68 and I admit I'm not too up on a lot of current music of today. I don't like getting stuck in a run so I have been starting to listen to music from today. I like this song and I appreciate the fact that they are actually showing their singing skills and I'm praying Autotune is not be used. Autotune is one reason why I've lost respect for current artists. I hope I can find new artists that actually use their skills and not depend on electronics to sound good.

I've seen this performance many times and am always moved by the orchestration of vocals, instruments, and emotion of the lyrics. The commentary on this performance is terrific and I love seeing your reaction to certain moments, a note by Lisa, a riff by Damien, the places that always pull me deeper into the song and the performance. I'm waiting for a reaction to Damien's performance of "The Professor" at Union Chapel to wind up on the reaction circuit, a truly remarkable, funny, and beautiful performance. Damien's "O" explored a confused young man trying to sort out love and life, this being the darker side of that experience. Thank you for this analysis.

They’re both Irish. They were actually in a relationship while they collaborated on Damien’s first two highly acclaimed albums (O and 9 which both came out in the very early 2000s). Unfortunately, while clearly very passionate, their relationship was also very tumultuous and Lisa Hannigan (the name of the female vocalist) quit and broke up with Damien. According to him, he was a jerk to her and he’s seemed to have never truly forgiven himself. He stepped away from the spotlight for 10 years(!) before finally releasing his beautiful 3rd album (My Favourite Faded Fantasy) which was very well received. Many of the songs/lyrics on that album could very easily be about Lisa. Never a bad word. In fact, he has publicly expressed a few times how much he regrets how he was in that relationship and that he hopes they can collab again. He has yet to release a 4th album but Damien takes his time. Lisa has been thriving. She has released several solo albums to great acclaim. She seems to be truly happy. She is a very shy, introverted person and also seems remarkably sweet and kind. She’s never said a bad word about Damien publicly but, when asked if she thought they’d ever release music together again, she said, very politely, that she doesn’t think so. I think that time in her life was very important but also painful for her…for them both, really. But, nearly 20 years later, they’re both still making wonderful music (Damien has released some songs in between albums that are beautiful, as well as toured and collaborated with other artists), and seem to be doing well…just separately. I think for Damien, Lisa will always be one of the loves of his life and a creative soulmate. I at least hope that they’ve gotten to a place, privately, where they’ve been able to forgive each other and themselves, even if it doesn’t go beyond that. Wow, sorry for the novel! 😂😅 I also JUST realized that I’m responding to a comment from 6 months ago. Still, I hope this helped in some way. 🥰

Apparently I need to stop sleeping on Damien Rice's music... I liked a bunch of his first album, but have not kept up with him at all because sometimes it was a bit... beautiful, but boring. Not boring at all here. The crescendo of this reminds me of the Antony & the Johnson's song Hope There's Someone (find the live version from Later... with Jools Holland), which is probably mostly because I've been obsessed with that song for years rather than the two songs being terribly similar. But it's also a soft and sorrowful song with this plaintive heart's cry of a crescendo at the end. I know Fil probably isn't reading comments on these old videos, but I've been going on a bit of a back catalogue binge and really enjoying them. But I do hate how suspicious it's turned my ears to wonder if everything I love is autotuned.

One thing that really bothers me…no idea if there’s a term for it but…when you can hear, on an acoustic guitar, the sound of the fingers on the frets, sliding over the strings. Seriously, I have no business as a non instrumentalist complaining about such a thing, but it just sounds screechy, and it’s all I can hear. I didn’t hear it in this video but I was entranced lol

She's fallen in love with a musician who at the end doesn't meet her needs, as her part ends with the line "...except you my love." He is angry and completely baffled that she leaves him, and utters one of the best, most emotionally laden lyrics in pop music, "....I remember December." What an incredible line...specific and intensely personal, the meaning completely opaque to our understanding yet clearly deeply consequential to him. Wow.
