I personally performed this job on my own vehicle for this specific reason. I took my time, dedicating four days to the task, meticulously thread chasing and torquing all bolts and studs to the required specifications. If only Brian, who takes immense pride in his work and treats customers' vehicles with utmost care, were closer to my location in NC. I would have gladly paid for his expertise instead of doing it myself. Brian's attention to even the smallest details sets him apart. He treats customers' vehicles as if they were his own, leaving no room for mistakes.

I think that’s part of the issue you appreciate Brian and his expertise because you know him and his reputation. A lot of these guys who are unknown underbid their work to customers and out of panic and frustration rush the job so that they don’t lose their butts on the labor charge. It’s not an excuse for bad work but considering how much volume a lot of shops receive and how cheap and unappreciative a lot of customers are I can see how it happens. I have my own private shop and see this stuff all the time from larger high volume shops all of the time.

I understand that mechanics are under great pressure to get jobs in and out as quickly as possible. Time is money. It takes time to do the job right, and sometimes you're hard press to take that time. One of the many one liners my mentor shared with me 30 years ago is the fact that if you ever feel you don't have time to do the repair right, why would you feel that you have time to do it twice? That one (as well as many others) has stuck with me throughout my entire career. Brian. You are the man buddy!

I'll tell you one thing, you weren't nit-picking. You have pride in your work unlike other people in this world. That's why you have the following you have and the reputation you have. don't know how it works in the US in that case but here, in France, my insurer pays to have the job done after everything has been documented and then they haggle with the shop insurance company 'til both are satisfied with the outcome. i don't pay a single euro and get a fixed car way sooner. 🙄

@kittytrail
@kittytrail 10 месяцев назад
@@dmitripogosian5084 kinda, it depends on what kind of coverage you've paid for but if your car is not repaired/modified as it should be by a professionnel, they'll have the job redone somewhere else then get the cost paid back by the first shop insurer as a shop has to be insured to be able to do business here. if you have the minimum legal level of insurance for a road worthy vehicles it's your problem though and you'll have to go to court suing the shop and/or its insurance company if the shop is insolvent. hope this clarifies it. 😉
@dmitripogosian5084
@dmitripogosian5084 10 месяцев назад
@@kittytrail Interesting, I never heard about that kind of insurance in Canada (actually our system is rather province dependent, so that's a caveat) Even comprehensive insurance means that you are covered for road accidents, and maybe if a tree fell on you, but not if your motor needs to be repaired. Shop insurances that's their business, but if you deal with maintenance I do not believe that my insurance can be involved. I need to check British Columbia, their car insurance is run by government, and there are no options, everybody is covered the same way.
@kittytrail
@kittytrail 10 месяцев назад
@@dmitripogosian5084 it's not about maintenance, it's about malpractice: a shop does shoddy work on your car, it has a professionnal insurance, your insurer has your car towed, damages are checked by an independent expert whose work is legally admissible and then pays the repairs, you get your car back running fine and they settle every thing with the shop insurance so you don't have to deal with them. a neighbour even had his car insurance cover for a botched wrap job last year. 😉 edit: sorry, it is also about maintenance if a shop does the work as they will settle everything with the shop insurance but not if you do it yourself. a good example is if a shop doing tyres rotation overtorques (over 400Nm instead of 90Nm discovered when trying to remove a wheel after a flat in my case, which can lead to failure and a crash) your bolts or lugnuts they'll step in and work on your behalf before the other party insurer has paid.

I have been in the business for 42 years and have seen broken manifold studs and got told by one owner who put it on himself that he thought it was just one bolt missing and the manifold will not break or come off. Ended up cracking the manifold which created a whole host of other problems for the guy. Long story short, replaced with a new manifold, extracted the broken stud, cleared out any codes that were created in the ECM. Hasn't had a problem since. When i started in mechanics when i was 18, i did a lot of stupid things, lol, per the learning curve of course lol, ignored installation procedures, etc,. But have learned and am still learning more and more about doing a good clean job on these newer vehicles, hell i even torque wheel stud nuts to proper specs ( about 95 ft lbs normal) lol, being honest with the customer, and above all listen to what the customer has to say to make an informed decision as to how to proceed with repairs.

You weren't kidding when you said this was a "nightmare". 😲 I experienced a few problems like this when I had the dealer work on my truck. These were Ford warranty repairs. In one case, they used a zip tie instead of the proper metal clamp on the drive shaft slip yoke boot. Another repair involved the fuel fill tubing, where they didn't fasten the band clamp down. I called them on both of these shoddy repairs. I was called in by dealer management to discuss these QA/QQ problems; they were not happy about these recurring issues. They fixed everything properly and gave me some freebies on parts to make it right. I suggested having a QA/QC mechanic inspect all repairs conducted by their shop before returning the vehicle to the customer. They agreed to do this. Later on, I actually met their QA/QC guy when they were checking another problem on the truck. I never had a problem with repairs after that. 💪👊

Only lawsuit I’ve ever filed was against a repair shop. Had a pathfinder with broken exhaust manifold studs, and paid the shop to extract them, put new studs and manifolds. When I picked it up and drove it, the car started smoking from from underneath the hood. Instead of replacing the studs, they used JB epoxy, to hold the manifold and cover the hole over the broken studs. I went back furious and they asked me how I could expect them to replace the studs with so little space in the engine bay. I asked them for the labor, price of the manifolds and $ to have a real shop try to fix the mess they made. Judge agreed.

Looking at the paperwork when I got home there is a mechanic note that the master cylinder cap is missing. I wasn’t told anything about this at the shop. This is exactly why I haven't been to a mechanic since I was 21yrs old. That was before the Internet so when I asked my mechanic back then how difficult it would be for me to replace my own speedometer/odometer cable in my vw rabit, he told me it would take around 3 hours to do on my own without the proper tools. So, I let it go for a bout a year because I was poor. Then I decided that I could probably do it myself and purchased the aftermarket part and installed it in less than 10 minutes with no special tools needed. If he had told me the truth, I would have taken it to him for more technical repairs later on. I love this channel and Brian YOU are an absolute stud of a mechanic and I wished you lived nearby, but alas, I will be doing my own repairs for quite awhile still. LOL

If parts can go together more than one way, if head gaskets need glass-smooth surfaces to seal against, if you can only tighten o-rings ONCE, if half the engine has to come apart to get at the water pump or starter, if there's ANYTHING plastic or torque-to-yield inside the engine, if you need a torque wrench to put it together or if there's no room to swing tools inside the engine bay, the car wasn't designed properly.

A week later overheated. $4,000 and they try to blame it on the thermostat. My son's response was so you put the engine back together for $4,000. Can you want to charge me $30 for a thermostat. He strongly suggested you will fix it this time. It had it for over two weeks. I'm a firm believer. You get the name of the mechanic is doing the work. When he or she screws up your car. He gets a subpoena and he sued for the 4,000 plus anything else you can get. And then you go after the dealership if you can. But do the mechanic first Sue the heck out of him.

Second time, the same tech claimed to be a hole in the coolant hose. Swapped it out with a new one. Took it home and same thing. Took it back the third time and they finally fixed the issue. I was pretty pissed and pretty sure if the tech took his time finding the issue, I would not of wasted money fixing something that most likely did not need replacing. So I told him no it's time for me to go or do something else. I know that was cheap but I needed the $$ & not too many places will hire a 67 year old man. If you, as a shop owner, warranty your work, this kind of junk will cost you three times. Once to do it wrong, once to do it again, and once for the job you could be doing while you fix your mistake. Not to mention the hit to your reputation.

what about that broken cross member... good view at 16:39 - look below / behind the turbo. A few seconds later it shows the opposite side that is not broken for comparison. That truck was in a pretty good wreck at some point and botched on the repair. (might actually be the motor mount support)

I saw not one instance of nitpicking there. Any one of those things, I would have gone back to the shop for. Or not since I don't let anyone else touch my stuff if I can possibly do it myself.

Please don't say you a nitpicking, it's called having pride in your trade and work you do. As a tradesman who has been shafted by other trades it really really really pisses me off when they ask for the money but don't do the job they said they were going to do.

I'm more of a GM guy myself. That being said, you obviously know these vehicles issues & the best practice methods to employ. Having heard you state the other shop admitted to some of these errors, my question becomes, Why? Did thy have a junior C mechanic in the shop that said he was an A+ mechanic (& they 🔥 him)? There must be a reason behind a total screw up like that.

I agree, that was a crap install. The one thing that I HATE most is when a mechanic fail to re install the factory support brackets and use the wrong bolts. Oh the engine covers are not optional, need to be put back on. HACK job!

I agree that they did a lousy job on that vehicle, but I really think these newer vehicles provide no room to work on their engines and too many things need to be removed to do any work on what needs to be fixed. Glad I only work on the fifties, sixties and seventies Chevy's. A lot more room for most things to be worked on.

The weight of the turbo, and the “torque” of the engine have absolutely nothing to do with exhaust manifold studs breaking off. That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my entire life. The only reason this occurs is due to thermal expansion, which is exacerbated by the log style manifold design. This style of exhaust manifold will always break studs regardless of the type of engine it is on. These new manifolds that were installed will also break the studs eventually. It is a flawed design and that is a fact.

Not nitpicking. If I'm paying a tech to do a job, I expect it to be done right. If I wanted a botched job I could have done that on my own! I also expect to get my truck back in the condition as i brought it in. Because of even dealership mechanics, I don't like bringing my truck in anymore. Example, brought my truck in for a 60k mile transmission fluid change, filter and flush. Did the radiator fluid, transfer case and rear end too. Early? Absolutly! Better than doing late and cheaper than pre mature wear. They put my old filter back in because it didn't look bad. First of all you didn't do what I asked, second you didn't talk to me about the filter before you made that decision, last since when do you not change filters during an oil change? Did they actually even do the flush to get the torque converter fluid? When they do my engine oil have they been changing that filter? Or do I keep getting that old one back? I wish you lived closer so I could make you my mechanic that actually looks into things. Not just plug a computer in and go "nope no active codes, your good"

I like the video but I also feel really bad for both the customer and truck. I'm a picky person (so no, I don't think you were nit-picking) so when I find a tech I like, trust, and does good work (dealership or otherwise), I hang onto them (working exclusively with them / requesting them by name to work on my vehicle(s)) like a starving dog hangs onto a bone.
