Magnus Carlsen won the FIDE Candidates' Tournament in London on Monday after a bizarre finish of what has become a historic event for chess. Both the Norwegian and the other leader, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, unexpectedly lost their game in the final round, and so they remained tied for first place and Carlsen won on the second tie-break rule: higher number of wins. This means that in the next title match, World Champion Viswanathan Anand will face Carlsen. On the last day Levon Aronian of Armenia beat Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan while Boris Gelfand of Israel and Alexander Grischuk of Russia drew their game.

Most of these moves are "intuitive" in some way. This may explain. Usually you see the special move as a possibility, what makes you a good player is the sure that it is indeed the best move.

I think RITE AID might be cherry picking his own data as tiago may be able to find the right move but he doesn't understand why. He knows he isn't suppose to be able to find it easily and probably wouldn't decide to go against an engine.

I know this is a 2013 tournament so the results are already known but since I'm new to this world of chess and to this channel, I don't want to spoiler myself. This is so intense! The only player who can save Carlsen is the player who has had problems to finish every game in this tournament!

I don't mean to take the fun out of this for you, but I think you can deduce some things by the fact that this was the Candidate's Tournament in 2013...

@agadmator - At move 41 why not play bf7 and trade a the bishop for two pawns. I mean it would be still difficult to win for white but it's Carlson and who knows if he could just get another miracle.....
@Pablit0Games

why after white's O-O black didnt capture free e-pawn and instead of he played Be7? After Ne4 white chase with d3 then Nc5 and black is up a pawn
@oblio9147
@oblio9147 6 лет назад
5:32 Carlsen was in time trouble because he was deliberately playing slow to keep an eye on the Kramnik game. If Kramnik lost he would play for a draw but if Kramnik won than he could play all out for a win. He was gambling on his blitz prowess to compensate and it almost cost him everything!

Hey I just have a quick question. When you're playing a certain variation of some gambit or something, at what point do the moves stop being a part of the variation and just become a regular game. Like when do variations stop being variations, and how many moves into the Queen's Gambit or something does it stop being part of the Queen's Gambit?
@RobFlaxMusic
@RobFlaxMusic 6 лет назад
I mean, it'll always be a game that started from the Queen's Gambit (in your example), and various categorizations like ECO code will always count it as such. The place where a game stops being "book" and starts being "the middlegame" varies by line (and the depth of your opening book). For example, the Sicilian Najdorf Poisoned Pawn Variation has been played so many times that you can go nearly 30 moves without leaving "known territory." In other openings that aren't played as much, it could be much sooner.
@KaptainKlutch123
@KaptainKlutch123 6 лет назад
So it more or less just depends on each specific opening and specific moves sets beyond that? Some being short and some being long, mostly just determined within Chess Books?
@RobFlaxMusic
@RobFlaxMusic 6 лет назад
Exactly. You could think of it like different fields of research. In mathematics the field of topology is very well researched, with only a few open questions (and you need a few degrees to even get to the point where you're breaking new ground). Knot theory is still wide open, and you can start getting published results even as an undergraduate.

8:38 Why couldn't Carlsen play bishop to f7, checking the king and picking up the pawn? I don't think that there's a defense for it and it would've got him back into the game
@jamesrivers3627
@jamesrivers3627 6 лет назад
Falseful Truth I thought about that too. However after the check, Kf8 and if you take the pawn then Kg7 and after you take your second pawn then King takes the knight and after you take the third pawn. Then Bb3 will win the b pawn. It's hard to say but even with this trade off maybe Magnus could have tied with this tactic
@danielgr95
@danielgr95 6 лет назад
I thought of the same at first, but I believe that it can go this way: 1. Bf7+ Kf8 2. Bxg6 Kg7. Kg7 comes with a double attack on the bishop and the knight and you lose a piece.
@BobbyBobBob1
@BobbyBobBob1 6 лет назад
After you check the king then Kf8 and if you take the pawn Kg7 and you lose your knight or your bishop
@danielgr95
@danielgr95 6 лет назад
+tiago ribeiro Don't know what third pawn you're talking about there but if I understand correctly you suggest: 1. Bf7+ Kf8 2. Bxg6 Kg7 3. Bxh5 after wich you don't have to take the knight but you can play Bxh5. Your knight is still under attack, so after 4. Nf5+ Kf6, you exchanged two pawns for a piece but the position is lost.

Great game. Too many complications. I don’t understand why Carlsen did not go for a draw by simplifying early on and maybe having winning chances in end game if Svidler would allow. Instead he was pressuring Svidler at king side and over complicating the position. He was lucky Ivanchuk managed for a change to make time control and defeated Kramnik.
