This Is How I FIXED MY SPONGY BRAKE PEDAL FOR GOOD!!
In this video I show how I was able to fix my spongy brake pedal on my 1995 GMC Suburban K1500 OBS GMT400. Since I purchased this truck the brakes have always been spongy. I've changed the brakes twice before which did improve the braking performance but it never improved the brake pedal sponginess. This time I decided rather than just replacing the pads and rotors I was going to replace everything and do a full disc brake system restoration. It was a success.

This 1995 GMC Suburban is considered an OBS and is the GMT-400 platform. It is also the same platform as 1988-1998 GMC & Chevy Tahoe, Yukon, Sierra and Silverado.

Jimmy, you are a God sent! I've been having the same exact problem with my 2017 Ford expedition. After replacing a master cylinder, brake booster, abs module, brake pads, rotors, speed sensors and all 4 hubs, your solution is the most logical. It never dawned on me to replace the caliper, hardware (slide pins) and flex hoses but it makes sense. Ford couldn't even figure out what was causing the spongy brake pedal. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your video👍👍👍👍👍

As always, great video Jimmy! I think the most important part that you replaced was your lines! Those rubber hoses after so many years when you put pressure to them they actually expand so that expansion causes you to have that spongy feel because of the give therefore that was probably the biggest key to getting rid of the spongy feel. I’ve done many that way and it seems to be what the common denominator is in between replacing all those parts together or individually. Thanks for the videos!

Jimmy, great points. Like you said greasing those bushings and slide pins and then flushing the old fluid is key to making sure that brake performance is top notch. It's been the same kind of issues experienced in the older square body trucks, especially the 4 x 4 trucks. many people thought they could always just get away with swapping out pads or just surfacing the rotors and going with new pads and then couldn't understand why one brake would drag or have some issue that was always derived from moisture causing the brake fluid to gel and swell or the ungreased pins getting locked and binding up.

Dude,,, I just put new rotors on and they were spongy as hell. I have done brakes before but I forgot about lubing those 2 pins. I just took them off and lubed the hell out of them and my new brakes FEEL like new now. NO MORE SPONGINESS AT ALL. Thank you for posting. I had a Cavalier years ago and probably could've done it for that too but I didn't even know it was important back then. I LOVE my new brakes now just as much as your wife enjoys hers. Glad you got it. Replacing the Power Brake Booster Check Valve in my 95 Caprice made a huge difference with my brakes. It's not a part I commonly hear mentioned but a failing one can cause all sorts of braking issues including spongy brakes.

@@yamhammer I appreciate the input but maybe I should be more clear. No more bleeding is necessary. Once the brakes are engaged the pedal feels very firm and stops quite well. The problem is the relatively large amount of pedal travel required before brake engagement occurs. This was by design from gm. They called it a "low drag" system that saved o.1 mpg or some such nonsense. This was not a problem with hydroboost equipped vehicles.

@@1RoadGarage Thanks! I always check amazon, along with all major parts retailers whenever I need parts for any of the 8 cars and trucks in my driveway. Sometimes they (amazon) are the least expensive, sometimes not whether with OEM stuff or not. Ordering online for store pickup at Advance Auto is usually cheapest for me, (and easiest, they are the only parts store within 10 miles of me -- I live in the country) as you can always get at least a 20% discount with online retailmenot coupons (often 25%). At advance I can combine the discount with my accumulated $5 or $20 speedperks discount codes, which can result in a lot more savings. And same-day pickup is always good, as I am usually in a hurry to get my parts. Anyway, your Suburban is a beauty. Never, ever, EVER get rid of it. hey, another thing to look for on older GM truck vehicles that GM did to compensate for their brake OVER TRAVEL -- they made a THICKER rubber brake pedal pad that was about 1/2 inch thicker than the original stock one. It didn't FIX a thing, it just moved what you felt 1/2 inch higher so it felt like less travel.

Nine out of ten guys don't realize how much the braking feel is determined by the REAR brakes. Many cars and trucks in the 80s-90s-00s were disc front and drum rear. Those drums better be right. The techs in many tire and brake shops today were born after the drum brakes faded from the scene. Better make sure anybody working on your drum brakes is solid on the details.

if the truck has the jb5 brakes (check RPO codes in glovebox) i bet you could get them feeling even better with a rear brake adjustment or replacement. At 24 years old the self adjusters are probably stuck. I had a worthless brake pedal and just did a rear brake job, the adjusters were stuck and the parking brake lever rusted to the shoe. After getting the properly adjusted, the pedal went from going to the floor with barely any stopping power to half way down with good stopping power. Next is to do the fronts. 326K still rolling.

I think you got about one more year before your truck can be registered as a classic under the 25 year law... at least, that applies to my state. Might cost a bit extra, but it's something to look into.

I have a 1995 OBS chevy silverado k1500 z71 and I'm trying to follow the steps for fixing the brakes on my vehicle because the brakes feel faulty.

The new flex lines is the cure, for an even better feel use stainless braided flex lines.

Here's some more info: 1500's: Use Akebono ceramic pads (the highest grade). Use RAYBESTOS 580438PER rotors. The rear brakes are largely not in the game. Check for a TSB on the brake proportioning valve. For those with 2500's that use Hydroboost, this is what I use: K3500 DRW rear wheel cylinders, Wagner WC79768 or D28-18274, swap out master cylinder to HD DRW version Raybestos MC39309. You must do both as the rear cylinder volume in the new MC matches the capacity of the new wheel cylinders. The front will still work fine, but the front 3500 calipers/rotors will not fit in the 2500. 2500's: AKEBONO ACT370 pads and RAYBESTOS 580438PER R-300 High Performance Rotors. This applies to 1994 and 1995 CK models, and possibly back to the body style change in 1990?? The same brands of quality parts apply to many more model years.
