This is how restoring a historic ship feels like! 

When we first started this journey on RU-vid we wanted to create films we love and somehow miss on RU-vid. Something new, something more cinematic and something we are proud once the video is out. Big dreams, big boat and our own little big story. Putting out a video that fulfills our own standards is a challenge each and every week. So the schedule is always tight, weeks are stressful and the weekly videos are always dangling on a string. So we’re sorry that you had to wait a bit longer for this video and we can only hope that you see the extra time we put in each and every video to make it „good enough“.

We have a dry sense of humor you said? Your sense of humor is drier than the Sahara Desert. But having said that and you having gotten me with your dry humor twice already I now understand and you really are quite humorous. The two of you have put in a tremendous amount of work and effort but you will get there sometime in the next century and your boat will be beautiful. Good luck.

About 20 years ago I bought a 1950’s 50ft tassie (Tasmanian) cray boat which was the first steel cray boat to fish the Tasmanian waters. By the time I bought it it was about 85% steel and 15% rust. I had a lot of fun working on it and to this day it is still floating around somewhere in northern Australia with a new owner. I look at your fantastic videos and it brings back the memories of all the hard work but also the satisfaction restoring a piece of maritime history. We’ll done to you both. Cheers Luke

You are both legends! It's hard to realize this when your muscles and back are aching but the sense of achievement you will have when complete will be astounding! And you will have an exquisite boat that you know inside out!

As a life long boater in my 70's, I am following your journey with emense interest. I only wish I were your age to undertake the task that you have. With all of that work, you will shortly look back and say you did something that no one has ever done and will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy Sailing Coney. I am envious....keep it up you will never regret it!

To take on a project like this , you must have a big dream and an even bigger heart for the outcome of it . Take pride in what you have achieved . Remember a beautiful pearl starts life as a piece of grit .

Just focus on the good comments, ignore the bad ones. The people who mock your efforts are just sad people who don’t have the nerve to try it them self. I think you are doing a good job bringing the old lady back to life.

Please keep going on RU-vid. Don't let haters guide your decisions. Many of us out here love what you do and really look foreword to the videos. If it gets to tough, just do a video every two weeks. Use a tie down strap from the deck above with a bungee cord on the grinder as this takes a lot of weight off you but you can still orbit about.😊

I de-rusted my (small) 9m long boat build in 1962 with the same tools as you used on Flying Coney. What a challenge! Very much respect to you guys!

Perseverance isn't enough, you become more steadfast and build a will of steel. It will serve you both well in future. You aren't just rebuilding a ship, you are building character. Our names are Willem and Yoka (Joke) van den Brink and we live in Australia on a 65ft Ketch that we built from scratch (from the beginning) just over 30 years ago.. We have been following your channel right from the start and love the fact that your boat is in the Netherlands as we were both born there. We know exactly how you feel as we now are dealing with the massive task of maintaining our boat after a few years of neglect due to our health. You are doing a fantastic job taking on such a mammoth task.. We are writing today to encourage you both to never give up on your dreams, no matter how hard it gets, you will get through it. Well done guys, don’t let the negative comments get you down. I am currently repatriating a vessel that has been in storage for 6 years and often wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew. You guys are doing a fantastic and through job in fixing the hull. It does look a little bit scary when you ground down all that rust and you can see all those indentation but she was built with a very very thick hull and there is still a lot of the metal left. I love her lines and can understand why you wanted to save her. You both have a final vision of how she will look and sail which many of the people who say scrap her do not have. A vision of a beautiful sail ship that would cost 1/2 million dollars to build brand new. Keep up the good work you both work well together and really support each other. Great teamwork. Each person doing the job that they are most suitable for. Great planning and organization and I liked that you had the hull thickness checked too. With your excellent derusting and coating with zinc primer you should have no further corrosion issue. Lots of zinc anodes would help too. Great job. Keep up the excellent work!

I got a chuckle from the little finger toggling the big rudder - which is small compared to the massive ship. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! Don't let the small members with ill will distract you from your course. Thanks for sharing this unique project. I love work. I can sit and watch it all day.

Hello Daniel and Barbara. I love watching you perform this monumental task. I am involved in restoring a steel 158ft WW2 US Navy Landing Craft in Oregon USS LCI713, (a non profit museum ship). We have some You Tube videos if you want to check it out. A few years ago, the LCI713 had almost as much rust as your beautiful ship! Our volunteer restoration crew has been working on this ship since 2004, but in comparison, you two have done more work in 1 year than is humanly possible! You two seem to have so much energy and dedication it is encouraging to see your continuous efforts at restoring Flying Coney. I think we want to try using that rust removal machine (Terco?) that you have, since we have tried several different machines but yours appears to work the best. Anyway try not to get too discouraged you are doing a great job! I cant wait to see how much progress you make every episode. Thank you for making such inspiring videos. I am glad the FC is back in the water now, and looking great! Jerry

Hi there, I have done this same work on my 20 meter passenger ship and much alterations, additions, new engines, bow thruster, generators etc. as in your case, I had very little money in the beginning and even now 25 years later, still no money, the banks have made a lot out of me! Then Covid and disaster. The business is semi-closed but I still love boats! Keep the faith and keep going. Fair sailing, SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.
