This is how you DON'T play Super Mario Galaxy: Game Grumps Edition

The Super Mario Galaxy games are considered by many to be not only the best platformers out there, but also games in general with the two being, as of this upload date, the highest and third highest rated games on the entirety of Gamesrankings, with Metacritic being similar. I share some of that sentiment, but if there's one critique I have to offer, it's that the game is, for the most part, very easy. So what could possibly go wrong? A lot, apparently. Any critique is welcome.

For someone who argued that gamers have the ability to recognize basic patterns like people are supposed to, Arin has a remarkable ability to not do that. The level at 5:07 is filled with objects and platforms with that star thing on them, and every one of them can be ground-pounded. You need to do that to progress, which tells the player that things with the star symbol need to be ground-pounded. And yet when faced with a boss with that exact symbol on its back, Arin's natural strategy is to jump on its back, stand there as it clearly does nothing and say "Yeah, see, it's working!" for 20 seconds before he figures it out.

It's okay, DSP died less to the final boss of the first Dark Souls III DLC than I did. Also, Arin may suck more than DSP at times, but IMO his content shits on Phil's.

Thanks for making these. I stopped watching them since Jon left. Not cause "uwu i like Jon/hate Danny" But cause since Jon left, there's no *JON WINS!* there's just *arin loses...all* the time. Whenever arin would get stuck, Jon would try, and most of the time pass it. Danny doesent even try to play. Even on steam train, Ross plays everything.

Having just picked up Mario 3D All Stars, I've been starting to play Galaxy on it and I immediately thought of this vid. I'm using it both as a perfect reminder of what not to do in it, as well as using it to be in a sort of competition to see if I can do better than Arin, and so far, that hasn't been difficult XD And the scenes that show Arin playing horribly and struggling with a segment only to cut to DSP playing the same segment from his playthrough of Galaxy and handle it near flawlessly? Now that is how to give someone the metaphorical middle finger.

Adam Block If their playthrough of God of War is anything to go by, this is true. Then again, Arin also follows his Zelda "logic" of "I'm going to rush in and whack them, and no I will not use lock on or shields because they are for the weak" He then dies a lot, then rages about how the game's controls are bullshit. The last bit is hypothetical, as I couldn't watch more than two episodes of them clearly not giving a shit about the story, but the rest of it is fairly accurate.

I remember when Arin criticizing a game and explaining how it actually worked was glorious. His Sequelitis of Castlevania and Rock Man were great watches for me. Even his early Game Grumps works weren't all bad. Since Jon left, though, it's only been downhill. His Zelda Sequelitis, while it had a few solid points, was mostly just him raging at nothing, his playstyle has only gotten much worse, and now he makes DSP look...not as bad. Still not Chris Bores, though. He had to hack to beat Rock Man.

I strongly disagree with Arin in the whole cutscenes part. It is absolutely annoying whenever you can't skip one, but the whole point is to add story to the game itself. One of the greatest strengths of the Zelda series are the stories that each game tells, like Wind Waker's post apocalypse setting, and Majora's Mask's depressing world. I myself play games and find being in their worlds to be my favorite experience. You don't have to play games just for the story, how fun they just are in general can still be good, but I don't think it's fair to judge a game for the sole reason of having a story, unless it's unskipable of course.

They don't really cover, talk about or showcase games, they just sort of suck at them while they run what should be a podcast of Arin and the other guy talking about nothing in particular. This was fine when Jontron was on the show, keeping Arin on point but now it just sucks.

Dude owns thousands of games (he did a walkthrough of GG office and showed them off) and has played hundreds of games for the show. You would think after playing so many games he would be at least semi competent at, lets be honest, games a lot of people beat as children. Thats not even mentioning the ones he claims to have beaten 100% in the past (OoT, MM, Sonic Adventures, The list goes on but those are probably the 3 most notorious examples on GG.)

Since I just rediscovered "This is how you DON'T play Super Mario Galaxy: Game Grumps Edition" over 20 minutes ago, I figured that I might as well watch it now. EDIT- 5:20 P.M.: *finishes compilation 3 hours later* DSP was able to beat parts of this game faster than the Grumps. That's pretty sad! 😆

For the Game Grumps, the Mario Galaxy series had a *ton* of potential to be one of the *best* playthroughs they've ever done. The only reason why this series started getting worse, moreso towards the end, is due to Arin's laziness, his stubborn inability to just look at walkthroughs between episodes and find out where the secrets and unlockables lie, since obviously he couldn't find out for himself, and the fact that he went back on his word to complete the game not once, but *TWICE!*

@Lord Whoopi Dan's fine. He doesn't blame the game for his mistakes (unless the game is reasonably bad) and also has an excuse because he's not exactly a seasoned gamer.

Arin is respectable to an extent and seems somewhat less salty than DSP DSP is not respectable at all and is incredibly salty, aswell as bag for cash. Their skill at games are remarkably similar, as both are incredibly inept at moments. Could this be a sign of the times?

I dislike both Dan and Arin. I can’t stand Dan interjecting his political opinions (or philosophical thoughts on rationality, atheism, and eating meat) and generally acting like a goody two shoes. Plus, he seems too PC at times. That said, he’s still MILES better than Arin. At least Dan is funny.

I know people will give them the benefit of the doubt because they are distracted while playing, but lots of other people stream and talk/read chat during gaming and have no trouble.

I suppose you have a valid point there. My justification was that it was Arin playing the game and so all of the skill (or lack thereof) falls on him, but thinking about it further, they all have a role in this shitshow, don't they.

Decoy Octorok They all do, granted, but you want to emphasize actual information in the description, sad though it may be. I mean, the title of the show is Game Grumps, slap that in there somehow, maybe use the word edition, there's three other videos like this and we need something resmebling format. Either way, I love what you've made and appreciate the work put in. Really tired of people being confused when I say Arin genuinely strikes me as a lazy piece of crap we shouldn't value the opinions of and stuff like this actually goes a way to ensuring sequelitist and his opinions on twitter do less damage. Keep up the *amazing* work.

I dont really buy the "oh he has to talk while he does this, he has to divert some attention!" From what I remember of Grumps, Danny does most of the talking anyways. And even if that were true, why don't they just hand the controller off? People would be much more forgiving on Danny because he's not very experienced with new games, but is also very pleasant and very interested in learning. He got his ass kicked by Punch-Out and made it very far, but never did he blame the game's design. He got mad, sure, but it wasn't at the game

@ 6:49 -- He's not exaggerating there, that water race level is actually hard to control because the motion controls aren't very precise in movement, despite how easy it might look.

I've never had an issue with it. It's really not that hard, but I 100% agree the motion controls are were particularly forced. Less excusable than the ball, which also could've used the stick.

I played this game better when I was at a Best Buy demo kiosk when I was 5 years old and I was the same kid on that same day that played a Spider-Man shattered dimensions demo on a Xbox 360 kiosk and within the first 10 seconds, I ran off a cliff, didn’t know where the RT button was to save myself (I was a PlayStation kid growing up) and then quit because I didn’t know Xbox controls

Arin is almost like DSP he loves dark souls he's probably decent at dark souls games but when he plays a children's game he is the worst and blames the company
