@@kirstyentwistle3192 first of all, dont say r/, this isn't reddit. And it wasn't going over my head, he was referring to fast and the furious movies shifting like 50 times in every race even though cars only have 5-6 gears.
Truckers will forever have my respect! Always give them there space and give them time before getting in there path, there job is no joke and If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have any of our merchandise we purchase. Thank you to all truckers out there. Love
Not hard at all dude we don’t use the clutch all you gotta do is apply pressure and ease your foot of the gas. it’s called floating the gears, if he takes to long shifting gears it won’t go to the next gear you’ll have to rev the motor to make the rpms line up with the tranny or whatever. I learnt how to drive with a 13 speed now I drive a 10 speed.
At the very least it gives you something to focus on, running 10+ hours can get a bit dry, if you've got some hills or tight corners i find having to cycle through a few gears helps me stay awake, auto's are dangerous, been running teams for long enough not to like them, you'd shit yourself if you knew how many drivers are half awake in trucks with cruise control rolling down the freeway

It's more than that I find. It forces you to be more aware of the road and your surroundings. You want to look ahead, and think ahead, to avoid having to shift down a gear or come to a stop and have to launch again. It also keeps you aware of you speed, since you're more involved in the process that got you that speed.
@ I totally agree with what you said, I drove school bus for over 20 years and about 16 of those years was in a stick shift….I learned exactly what my bus was capable of doing and which gear to be in for the conditions, be it either weather or traffic…I also was an instructor who made sure my trainees understood the importance of being in the right gear for the situation at hand so they would always be in control of their bus at all times. So yes, you’re right when you say it’s much more than that! 👍🏼☺️
Watched my dad do this for years. At 12 yrs old he asked if I wanted to drive. I said quickly, "yep". Hopped over and took off like a fish in water, he just let me keep going. I'm 32 now, 4 kids, work construction to be home every night. Kids never been in a truck and I haven't talked to my dad in years. I miss the sound of a turbo, that hissing sound from splitting gears. One day I'll be in a truck, it's in my blood.
paintup46 Respect to you man, a hard working American to support his family. Idk what happened between you and your dad, but I agree with this man about seeing your father.
If trucking companies were smart, they would just go all-in on automatics on Semi’s. Nobody wants to drive a manual transmission. They need to go the way of Carburetors.
The man got skills! The gear placement, red button forward and back plus the other in front plus 13 gears to think about....all done smoothly,Beast mode
I was talking to a friend today about how simple it is to shift trucks nowadays, cuz they're automatic. Huge respect for those like you who can still master a beast of a gearshifter like that one :)
Straight to the point and you didn’t even explain anything but still managed to give way more details than any other video on RU-vid that Ive watched on the 13 speed lol
Thats just how I've been doing since i started driving 13 speed and i learned all by myself. Today i just came to youtube to see if i was doing it properly and this good man pretty much said i am doing properly. Thank you for the video my man,God bless you.
Exactly how i did it years ago, lots of little nuances you can pick up for different conditions like weight or hills. My older brother said he could drive anything... he failed miserably with this same transmission. Respect to you.
Finally a driver who knows how to hold the gear shifter in his hand correctly. Thats the first step in getting them smooth shifts! No matter which trans you have pay attention to his hand and learn!
That's how I drove my 13spd when I was on the road. It's that simple! Other videos put too many emphasis and too many zig zag details to throw you off. Making it more difficult than it actually is. Yours is simple and to the point. Good job! 👍👍👍
Thank you for your superb demonstration Old Man Riding. I recently got a new trucking job and my shifting was rusty cause my last company went all-automatic with the fleet. After watching your video I literally shook the rust off within an hour.
@@oldmanriding Thank you 😊. I started driving professionally in 2008 and most manuals I've driven were always 10-speed. The only time I drove a 13-speed was during my training with CR England back in early '09. This new company (D&M Transportation) gave me a 13-speed Coronado and your demonstration helped a great deal with restoring the memory and timing. The automatic comment had me laughing 😆
All of us who run 9s 10s 13s and 18s giggle at the automatics on the hills with the rookies behind the wheels the automatics are good IF THE DRIVER SHIFTS PROPERLY.
God Bless You Oldmanriding... LoL 😂 -- I've gotta' admit that when I was 15 and my Dad said meet us on the Grand Concourse (up in the Bronx)what he meant was it's about time you start learning how to throw some gears & drive without power steering ! It was kinda'my right of passage here in Brooklyn , NY -- 73 Mack R700 with Detroit & 13 speed Road ranger.....that was back in1982 and I haven't stopped driving them since !
Im been driving only 10 speed trucks, my truck is on the mechanic and I have to drive a 13 speed today get the job done. This video was really helpful and everything goes well so far.
The man in a ‘grand father’ age made a very good video. Perfect angle and interest in sharing. Appreciated. And also noticed the old jeans material which looks like 80 and 90s.
I drove a little back in the 80's, and the 13 speed Fuller Road Ranger was very popular. It takes practice, but you eventually get the hang of it. Downshifting takes some finesse, but it too is doable with time and practice. What always blew my mind was the dump truck drivers who used a two lever "Brownie" shifter. They had to use both hands, with one arm through the steering wheel. Never figured that one out....
FINALLY a video on how to properly drive a 13 speed. Cuz if I get that video of that overly pretty Mexican guy trying to drive a 13 speed one more time, I'm gonna throw up. Well done sir!! And the comment about the automatics, I love it!! Have a good day bud.
@@thatkyleguy1289 he's trying to say that he will bio your story into D60 13 speed Cat11 engine while sipping the maple syrup dripping from the cucumber tree on top of red Mustang hill below old twat creek next to smelly armpit and stinky nut sack... I think
Shifting 2 gears per shift 2x6 is 12 plus one shift for 13 at 6 you switch to high range and when you said to watch the red button you split the last two gears 12-13 good video and very educational
I would get tired of it if I still had to drive the 405 but my commute is all highway now and I'm not getting another automatic until they're so automatic that I can nap on the way to work.
Finally someone who know how to shift a 13 correctly. It drives me crazy when guy pull the shifter out of gear push the red switch or overdrive forward then put it back in gear it is not how u do it. Eaton will tell u that. Hell the sticker on the dash if it's still there will tell u this. I like how u started the video with OK u want to drive a big truck but u want an automatic that's cute. 😂😂😂. If it were not for the automatic u couldn't find any steering wheel holders at all. Hell my 24 year old nephew can't even drive a standard shift car for Fuck sake.
J Cortes if your driving a 13 you can skip gears if your light or empty I do. Once you past 8th gear you can't it just lugs to much. Hope that answers question. Thanks for watching
oldmanriding thank you sir. I started off on an automatic. It was nice in town, then it broke down and they gave me a 10speed. Took me a few days to get it down. But I fell in love with it.
correct me if im wrong but the red button is to activate maybe a second transmission, OR it changes the layout of the shifter so there isn't 13 different gears layed out on the dashboard until it goes to the passenger side
My Tundra is automatic because there wasn't a manual offered. I will eventually get a second vehicle which will be some classic convertible and It will be stick. I do drive in the button press shifitong mode, I cant stand for it to auto shift as it never does it when I want it to (or any car for that matter)
We have trucks with both. I have driven both A LOT. It doesn't make you less of a man to dive an automatic. Actually, they have some badass autos out there. It all comes down to application. A Stellar drop box truck benefits from an automatic when positioning boxes in tight quarters. In situations where many newbies drive a truck an auto will save u many a clutch brake (and clutch) in newbie city driving. It won't be long and automatics will dominate the trucking industry. The driver who bases his "manhood" on shifting is, in reality, insecure.
Sorry but I totally disagree..I drove stick until the injury and automatics almost like driving the car. The driver who bases his "manhood" on an automatic is the insecure 1..it is nothing to go from stick to auto, but I pity many a clutch when some "automatic" newbie gets behind even 10 speeds. And Allison, Borg, ZF and others have many a year research left until their "autos" can haul upwards of 120-160K lbs.
Wolf277 you obviously don't know anything about trucks. They have automatic trans for trucks that are rated much higher than your rear diff will handle. Allison's standard TC-10 automatic truck tranny is rated for 13,000 lb-ft of output torque and 110,000 gvw. And that's just their starting point. They will build their rugged series to whatever rating spec you need. And I've noticed that truckers who drive autos never base their manhood on their tranny. Gear grinder extremists are the ones with egos.
You are the 1 who started bat swinging with that "remark" in your last sentence. First, why don't we try and get some of your Allison figures straight since it's obvious you can't. The TC-10 1850-110 is their top end unit, NOT their starting point, which can handle up to 600Hp input and 110.000 lbs GCW NOT GVW. GCW is gross combined weight, so NO it cannot handle heavy haul 150-160k loads. And no, they don't " have automatic trans that are rated" for lets say an Eaton D52-190P..heavy haul still needs stick! It is nothing to go from a stick to an automatic..been there done that..13s and 18s to an auto..and it was a manual auto. Yes automatics have their place, such as buses, in-city and local delivery, fire engines but just like driving your everyday mode of transport, trying to drive a stick after doing an automatic, a long learning curve. And yes, I know QUITE a bit about trucks.
