Sorry, your initial tapping technique was/is all wrong. You always turn 1 or 2 turns clockwise, then 1/2 a turn or 1 turn counter-clockwise to break the swarf. No need to remove the tap completely from the workpiece. Basic tapping stuff. This makes sure the swarf is broken into small bits that work their way down the flutes of the tap and out the bottom. Yes a spiral tap will do a quicker job under normal circumstances.
When I'm tapping on the mills I rarely back out, but always do when hand-tapping. Depends on the tap too. Spiral point should not be confused with spiral flute. Lube oils aren't the best. Kero, ATF, and water are better. We want to cool as much as lube, and smoke is a sign of heat absorbed. IMO that's all good.
Been using a drill for years even with standard taps just have to reverse to clear chips. Lots of forward and reverse but gets the job done faster and easier than a T handle.
#1 you’re using a T-handle tap wrench for a 1/2” tap. #2 you’re using a cheap tap - pretty sure it’s not a ground tap. #3 no tapping fluid. #4 looks like hole is gloop small - you’re probably trying to cut 80% thread.
