Kenny Loggins wrote this song, along with Michael, for his dad. Kenny's dad was fighting cancer, and Kenny wrote this to tell him to not give up, keep fighting. I used it as my theme song while I went through 4 years of fighting cancer. Now, I'm so far still cancer free.
Me too Donald Walker. "This is it" was always my favorite tune but didn't know the story behind it till just after I started my fight two years ago. Isn't it funny how after 40 years a song can connect on another level?
I saw Kenny Logins in concert a few years back. As he introduced this song, he said so many inquire about the story behind it. He went on to say he was visiting his father in the hospital and Michael McDonald met up with him there. Logins went on to say that the Final Four was going on and it was time for the guy to make the winning shot. They said, "Come on. This is it." Thus the song was brought to life. Like I said, he told the audience this as he introduced the song. Both narratives work though.
I've always liked the song But never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine its pertaining to cancer But by the grace of god you have such an awesome testimony on how god healed you and you won in the process , it doesn't work as well for everybody we assume that if god did it for one he could do it for all. it just wasn't your time last year my sister fought the battle but loss the pain was beyond excruciating when we loss her.
2 of the most outstanding male singers in a duet is pure magic. I had almost forgotten about these songs as sadly they are not played so often. It s more than amazing !
This song was the tag for promos for the 1980 NCAA Tournament. I can never hear this song without picturing Darrell Griffith slam-dunking a basketball.
I never knew kenny Loggins, Michael MacDonald or this song till I was in the hospital with a spinal cord injury.my brother had mentioned the name Kenny Loggins to me and I was listening to this song (and many others) during my almost three years in the hospital. I'm out now in an assisted living setting and my brother just passed in May of this year.diagnosed with lung cancer and he was in three months. Truly no one knows what the future holds--except God. We are all born, we all die hence we are born to die. We are dead before we are born.
Not many male singers can perform duets & both song awesome. Kenny Loggins & Michael McDonald are awesome together. No one "takes" the performance away from the other.
I have just endured extensive chemotherapy treatments in my life ! I keep this song written and performed by Kenny Logging and Michael MacDonald , on repeat ! I’m Not giving up, I Am Not Ready To Leave This Journey called Life ! December 2022 to January 2023 ! “This Is It ! “
Donna - just saw your post here. The medical profession is working miracles these days - something that nobody thought could be possible, until fairly recently. But now it's actually true!!! You're not "giving up", you say and good for you, because in this day and age, there's no reason to do so. This song is pretty inspirational, I agree - so continue to keep it on "repeat". xxxx
WOW! THIS BROUGHT BACK THE ECCELLENCE OF MUSICAL ARTISTS .... These lyrics ring sooo true even today! I never heard these two masters together before! Such beautiful, awesome, power in this blend! Thanks for sharing!
This is one gorgeous song, the lyrics, the instrumentals is simply the best. I have to say it's one of the greatest songs ever. Over the years KL and MMcD have had different versions that are nice. I have to say this versions is one of the best. Loggins sound great here and the background singers knocked it out of the park with their vocals especially at the end.
I'm watching them sing this over & over, such a beautiful thing to see 2 very good friends perform together u can tell they love each other. I do too❤❤❤❤
Have mercy just look at that rhythm section. 😳 Not just an all star line up but literally possibly one of the best rhythm sections you could get nowadays. 🙌🏼
This is my favorite singer. I can't believe it. It's just hit after hit ! Even if he only did one song Michael McDonald would still be my favorite singer. I hope he is good on the inside like he looks on the outside.
This song will always have a place in my heart.1986 university of Louisville battle cry for run to the schools first basketball national championship!!!
I always love this song growing up as a young kid. But later in my life this song would end up being an anthem for my father. My father’s 6 year cancer fight was filled with so many emotions, heartaches, and many tears. This song played through some of the most precious moments with my father. I love you dad wherever you are, know that I love you and you will always be in my heart ❤️
Still say that this song is Everything. Gotten me through Alot of hard times- Pure Gospel. Even my ringtone. Inspired everyone from Micheal, El Debarge, and Kirk Franklin- All music categories. Kennys voice is Sooo versatile. Living Legends!!!
Kenny Loggins is my second all-time favorite male vocalist. I’ve loved his music since I was a child. There used to be a radio show back in the 80s that would feature one artist’s music for like a two hour show. I was hooked after hearing Kenny’s show. Great song after great song, even the B sides.
I have this DVD and have watched it more times than I can count. Extraordinary musicians throughout. Michael and Kenny are two of my favorites for as long as I can remember. It truly doesn't get much better than this. This is it!!
Two extraordinary singers performing on top supported by the one and only Steve Gadd on drums. Great to see the friendship between Michael and Kenny. ❤
Micheal said it right The Great Kenny Lognes . Thank you hanging in there it’s such a joy to hear and see you on stage. Your Fan , Marty Kozee Masden✌🏻💕😎
I can relate to these lyrics. I have been fighting cancer since 2015. It is now 2023. Have been cancer free now for coming on 5 years. I hope it stays that way.😌
Love this guy! Thank you Kenny for being such a big part of my life, though I've never met you. I was 12 when this song was brand new. Mr. McDonald you rock!! The studio version is pristine in it's own right, but this version just takes it!! My favorite song ever!
A sensational brilliant performances from both of these sensational and gifted musician with a combined tone of voice being singing the same kind of lyrics for this particular song. A master piece once in a lifetime opportunity with Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald.
Two extremely great voices. I love the texture of both. I always considered Mike as a white chocolate soulful singer, like Tina Marie(I love her too). And Kenny Logging is a wonderful falsetto in the vein of Smokey and Russell Thompkins JR. And this is in no way a disparaging remark because there have been very great Caucasian singers who I love, like the Three Dog Night, Tommy James, and the Shondells and Frankie Valli until this very day. The 62 year old African American male that I am. But if you close your eyes and were hearing this for the first time. You would swear to God and bet your rent that these were two brothers singing, I love this performance 😅
But does everyone know why they wrote the song? Kenny's father was in the hospital dying. Kenny asked Michael to help him write a song to his father. In other words "ok dad...this is it. You say it's over...only if you want it to be. You're waiting for a sign? a miracle?" Go back and listen to it again and imagine the words he's saying to his dad. It all makes perfect sense then.
Peter W What irony. I was just thinking that this is the worst-performing soul band I've ever heard, mainly because of the issues they have with rhythm and tempo. Such a waste of the great vocal performance.
Composition, arrangement, production & engineering meet the right voice, consummate musicianship, jazz, rock, Taking a few chances and having a good time
@Michael Mcdonald Merry Christmas Michael Mcdonald. I have a son named Michael who is 34 years old. He has CHARGE syndrome and lives in a home for the handicapped. I LOVE him so !!!
I'm back like I said before they have so much SOUL. I have both their CD's in my car and when I want to go back in the day I just smile and say YOU GO BOYS!
