Yeah, Oda is a master of the retcon. This one, if it's one, is so good it really makes one question. Hell, you can also throw his supernatural eating and digestion into that, even better with the genius misdirection of life return we see in the Enis Lobby fight making us believe that Luffy just can do that because he is Luffy and no one told him it's impossible or hard. But no, it was toon force eating all along.

I thought it was because the Nika god's body was already made of rubber. The elders said it during the reveal. Nika The Sun God's body had the exact properties of rubber and fights in any way he fancies.

@Action1528 that sounds right. In my head cannon, gear 5 was activated when django hypnotized the pirates to be stronger and luffy fell to it. Imagine nika vs kuro.

Thinking about it, the first stretching he did is a legit old cartoon gag, with the legs stretching and then bouncing back. That's... I don't even...

He didn't ate gomu gomu no mi fruit. He ate human human no mi model sun god nika. And sun god nika's body made of rubber that's how luffy got rubber power. Its like what if you ate a fruit called human human no mi model zeus. You can do whatever Zeus did. That imagination thing is not like luffy can do whatever he want. He can do whatever he want with his rubber power. Like grabbing lightning, turning kaidos body into rubber, basically he can turn anything into rubber even air. Like made goggles and baseball bat with thin air.

Really, this fight was an artistic masterpiece. You really see it during short moments like the one where he has his fist on the ground later, and the world is basically warping and barely holding onto any physical logic in his proximity, the cartoonish and usual OP art style mixing and breaking against each other, and pebbles and dust being pulled into that struggle. Or when Momo and Yamato get close to the fight, how their art style too beings to fluctuate and starts flimmering when they gat into the range of influence of Luffys power.

I wasn’t a huge fan when it got revealed in the manga, but the anime sold me on it! It fits Luffy and One Piece perfectly

@@AntiCx_edits Yeah, and if it's not planned from the beginning, this is the most god like retcon I have ever seen. Every bit of weird bullshit Luffy pulls makes sense in one fell swoop. Him never killing his opponents despite giving them the beating of their lifetime, hims constantly surviving stuff that should have killed him, his rubber making no sense if you take actual rubber into account, his absolutely insane and ridiculous god/bad luck. Hell even his supernatural eating. Obviously he wouldn't kill his opponents, obviously deadly things wouldn't kill him, obviously his rubber makes no sense, obviously he has the most ridiculous luck and obviously he can vanish food like breathing. It never was really rubber in the first place, it always was fricking toon force. Hell, looking back, even the first stretching he ever does, his legs suddenly getting longer and him hitting the floor while Shanks holds him at his ankles? Thats an old school cartoon gag.

It's more like you know what powers you got because it became obvious what you got, like, I ate this random fruit and now I can transform into a feline, so I know that I ate a Cat Zoan of some model. Something like that.

@@Dracos210 It hasn't been confirmed the only mention of this was by Crocodile and the way he put it across was like this, "the more a Devil Fruit user trains their powers, they gain a greater understanding of how they work and their limits."

@@Dracos210 No, they have an idea of the rough concept of the powers. The story very extensively has shown you do not get to know "all your powers". You get to know the most basic powers on an instinctual level, but everything else you need to work out. Pretty much all the users we see had to figure out their techniques themselves. They just get to know "I am a Rubber, Lightning, Giraffe, Syrup, whatever Human". But thats it. What they do with that is up to them.

And here is the kicker, that makes perfect sense, because cartoon characters do act like they are made from rubber. And looking back at all of Luffys BS from the story now? All those silly gags like his supernatural eating, him surviving things that should have killed him often in comical ways, him just no selling Enels power despite it not caring about matters properties with any thing else and vaporizing it? It all makes perfect sense in the context of his power being the toon force all along.

Yeah that annoyed me a lot.

Oda explicitly did this because he was bored of every fight getting bigger and more serious. Everyone else can go edgelord, he wants Luffy goofy even as the threats move on to biblical proportions. Tom and Jerry slap fights for the fate of the world 😂

So long that ones ignores that all of Luffys bullshit that never made any sense before now makes perfect sense. Fridge Brilliance in the first stretching Luffy ever did, his legs getting longer when held by Shanks, being and old school cartoon gag.
