These days reviewers can destroy products without knowing much about it. 1) the blinking light is a warning that the battery power is low. 2) the switch behind the batteries is to activate the shutdown script (you only have to set this once, but still have to input a script aswel, again only once). 3) complaining about the fact that you have to install Raspberry pi and software makes it sound as a negative. The product is build around a raspberry pi so installs is just something you have to deal with. Know what you buy. It's like reviewing a manual-shift car and complain that you have to shift gears yourself. Could have just said: want out of the box gaming, get for example a Bittboy. Not scared of doing a bit of setup yourself get a GPi.

There is a battery indicator. Look at the power led, when the battery’s are low it starts blinking. It’s right there in the video aswell you can see it blinking when the battery is low. I contacted retroflag and they confirmed that the blinking led is in fact a battery indicator for when it’s running low.

The safe shutdown switch in the battery compartment is not what you were assuming. It just puts the rasberry into a mode where the safe shutdown script actually works. If the switch isn't on then the script won't work. Just make sure the switch is on... That is, if you actually have the safe shutdown script installed on your pi.

I have worked with other RetroFlag cases and when he got to that part it bothered me too. It only take a few minutes of searching to figure out what it's for. Yes their included manual is limited but all the info is right on the linked web page. The safe shutdown that RetroFlag has implemented into their cases make them a great choice for retro console projects. Also, I get he wants something that just works out of the box but DIY people like this sort of thing.

You can't see the system files itself from Mac OSX or Windows because they're on an Linux ext4 partition. On the fat32 partition is only the bootloader.

@Wulff Den... The reason you couldn't see a lot of files on the micro SD card is that there are 2 separate partitions. The BOOT partition is just used at system startup and is formatted to FAT32 (like most flash drives). The system partition is probably ext4, a Linux format which is not visible on Mac or Windows! Apple & MS just don't want to support it, however, Linux will read everything Mac or Windows!

One tiny detail I noticed about the battery issue: The power indicator was blinking - maybe that's their low battery warning? Then again, it does seem to blink through most of the footage you've shown... But regarding the mystery safe shutdown switch in the battery compartment: I think it's the same as in the other Retroflag cases and toggles wether the case just cuts the power or triggers a safe shutdown.

The blinking led is indeed a battery indicator. I got word from retroflag and they confirmed that it’s indeed an indicator of the battery’s being low.

The on/off switch under the battery disables the shutdown script when set to off, turning off immediately with the regular on/off switch.

I remember having the first model of the Raspberry Pi in freshman year of highschool. Was able to download the OS and get it working and everything. Installed doom on it. Really cool experience.

In retropie you can try different emulators or emulator settings for the games that are having problems. Builds are different, but in most emulation station setups, you can repeatedly press "a" as the game is booting to access a menu that will allow you to select between the emulators you have installed for the platform in question. Again, depending on how your build is setup, there should also be scripts for adding libretro (retroarch) cores and other emulators.

This actually miles ahead of the game as far as portable RPi setups. The best I've seen still require a bit of soldiering, so being able to just slot in an RPi Zero is pretty cool.

You’d be surprised. I just got into the gba modding scene and while there is universal love for the ags-101 mod (backlight mod), I would say the majority of people still use or would rather use AA batteries. Hell there are plenty that brag that using rechargeable AAs is better and cheaper. This is weird considering a micro usb/usb-c mod is pretty cheap and of course a thousand times more convenient. Sure you can swap out your batteries but we are acting like it’s not 2019 and you also don’t own a power bank if you really want to game that hard and didn’t charge your gba beforehand. Imagine if you used that same logic with your cell phone.

@@Pasicho Here's the thing. As long as the screen is lit, I prefer AA batteries. Ever been stuck in a hurricane? Maybe a nuke hits, and batteries are your only option. I want to be able to have some semblance of joy in the nuclear winter.

The only advantage to them is that you can instantly switch then out and that you can find them everywhere. Sametime, rechargable batteries are really good now and usually last most of the day.

It blinks like that no matter how much battery life it has. Half of this video was filmed with low battery, and half was filmed with a full battery. It's all the same blink-age.

I appreciate the honesty with this shell. I was considering moving to it from my BittBoy and Odroid but it doesn't seem worth the cost. Given the BittBoy is on V3 and can run more emulators I'm going to hold out for a redesign (which hopefully includes shoulder buttons like this) of the device and upgrade to one of those. I have a V1 which isn't easy to get on CFW and the d-pad is atrocious.

I like making my own builds in retropie, including customized themes, so I'm probably gonna pick up the gpi case. I'll also probably be installing my own litium ion rechargeable battery because relying on AAs sounds terrible. It's worth noting that the pi 0 is relatively new and the retropie images aren't as optimized for it yet. It's possible that some of the emulation slowdown and sound issues you experienced will be patched out in future updates. Not a great problem for this to have at launch, but it's kinda the nature of emulation. Everything that works well now didn't work well at some point. And for a good gameboy recommendation, I'd totally suggest Crystalis if you haven't played it before. Especially for gameboy color. It's a fun action rpg that has some game mechanics that I haven't really seen replicated since.

I’ve set up several retropie systems on both the raspberry pi three and zero so I would be all over this case. I typically don’t have a need for mobile gaming though.

Quick tip, there is in fact a battery indicator. The power led starts blinking when the battery’s are low. Also having a fresh clean install of the latest version of retropie will help significantly

The on off safe shutdown switch in the battery compartment most likely is to change the mode of the main power switch. I know on the other retro flag cases for the power switch to work as a safe shutdown you needed the safe shutdown set to yes and the script installed.

The little red light flashes when the batteries are low iirc. Also it's been some time now so there are a lot of ready made images out there that all you have to do is load your roms and your good to go. if it's a pi zero w you have the option to load them over wifi, or if your on linux you can just insert your sd card into your pc and load them that way too. For game boy / game boy color I recommend Warioland: Super Mario Land 3, and Monster Rancher Battle Card. For NES I recommend RC Pro-AM and Holy Diver.

Mr. Poe it’s alot better than he makes it seem, there is in fact a battery indicator, and the premade image he was provided with was very bad and unoptimized, and the boot time is usually 40 seconds so idk what retroflag gave him but it’s not a great image.

They make an add-on to the Retroflag GPi case that allows you to add a Raspberry Pi Compute Module + to it. By adding the CM+ you can get about 10 times more power out of it and essentially run anything very well up to a Dreamcast.

This device is perfect (even insanely good) for tinkering. Yet quite a terrible option for people looking for a "out of the box" experience. The good thing is that you can install custom emulation cores that runs very well with the pi zero (I don't know if this is the case with the pre-configuration SD card that Wulff Den is trying out). It seems however that the device would need some kind of Voltage/Ampere sensor for the battery compartment to enable "low battery" warning, and even a safe shutdown when reaching critical levels. I could see myself actually modifying the bootup sequence, adding performance efficient emulation cores etc. But this will take hours to configure and not something that people "just wanting to buy a product" would like. So, I applaud you for making an awesome review, because it really looks at the product from the perspective of a normal consumer.

Just get 3ds and install Luma3DS. Best way to play portable games, you get SNES, GBA, NES, SEGA, GBC, and the 3ds library itself is awesome with titles like MH4U, Super Mario Maker, Pokemon Moon, Smash Bros, etc.

For people that don't feel comfortable building their own device then yes a modded device like the 3ds is a good place to start. A GPD XD is also a good choice. RetroFlag cases appeal to the DIY crowd. I've built a few retro consoles for my nephews and nieces and they enjoy them quite a bit.

Regarding the safety switch in the battery compartment, it's probably there in case you need to go into a recovery mode of some sort and you're using the micro usb.

Megaman Zero runs just fine on my Raspberry Pi 2. The RasPi Zero is based on the RasPi 1 though, these extra cores and slightly higher GPU clockspeed may make the difference. Or maybe your test unit was underclocked to save battery?

Two important notes about Pi emulation FIRST you should overclock to smooth out performance on a Zero but SECOND if you just get the most powerful model of Pi (3 B+) it will run basically everything perfectly without that You will need overclocking for N64, Dreamcast, and a couple others to run closer to full speed Making the 3 B+ portable is a bit harder, but still a good solid option for home and portable play

Of course the B+ runs games better. That's why literally everyone would use it for stationairy Emulation. Fitting it inside this formfactor without desoldering basically the whole I/O would be quite hard. Plus, there is like zero Airflow - so overheating can get a serious problem. And that's pretty much why the zero runs inside those projects. Way smaller formfactor. But it's still pretty well suited for Gameboy, NES and for the most Part Snes.

Its true that some games shouldnt have any problems with the raspberry pi but it really depends on the software revision and what emulator that is running, which can be easily configured in the menu or the raspiconfig.

On the retropie wiki if you look up the console it will tell you which emulator to run for each console some are optimized specifically for the pie 0 which make a world of difference

Alkaline batteries produce gradually lower voltage as they are used. Use a rechargeable battery and that should be better.

All battery types produce a gradually lower voltage as they are used. In fact, the current charge of the battery is determined by it's voltage drop at a given amperage draw.

Some of the issues mentioned can be improved with some config change, e.g. lowering aspect ratio to 720p, or even slight overclocking it. Boot screens/Background music can all be changed when you FTP into the Pi.

I got the gpi and after getting all the software on and scripts and also loading on further emulators not shown it works wonderfully. GBA games work really well and the sound is smooth.

I would still probably still get it with the zero w, just cause Raspberry Pi's are great cheap little tinker devices. It may not be for everyone. And sure it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a bluetooth controller, connect to your smartphone, get some roms & emulators and be done. Its the feel of (some what) building it yourself and watching it just work. It just more for the people who like to build one without modding an existing one to work for the pi. As a person just looking to just play games without some tinkering and know how. Unless you know someone who knows around the Pi. They should look else where for alternative

This kind of thing looks like exactly what I've been looking for. A nice, portable retro system in a Gameboy or Gameboy Color shell to play SNES and Advance games. I've never used Raspberry Pi, but I figure I can mess with it as I went along, so is that a bad idea then to buy this and just wing it?

New version of lakka is gpi compatible, boots up quick, and works with safe shutdown switched on.

I believe the switch in the battery compartment is to enable/disable the safe shutdown script. It's not meant as a way to safely shutdown.

My big ones on the Game Boy when I was a young fella were Island Adventure 2, Mega Man, Animaniacs, and there was a Taz the Tiger game but i dont remember the name. Oh and Mortal Kombat 2 as well as Killer Instinct.

Jup.. that is in fact a battery indicator, it was recently confirmed by retroflag that the blinking led is in fact a low battery indicator

I found a gameboy advance sp for like $40, that plays gameboy games very very well (obviously), i have never been interested in trying to get emulators running if i can just get the original hardware.

I can see how installing an operating system who would be frustrating for someone's first time, but I've done it like 15 times including windows and random Linux installations that I put on a flash drive. It's not that difficult just use etcher, I recommend it because it has the simplest layout with the fewest options, automatically sorts to the drives plugged into your system so you don't accidentally install Linux on your main SSD. It will only show up drives with a low importance score, AKA wiped drives or drives with nothing or practically nothing on them.

They should do one for the Raspberry Pi compute module. That would probably even run games up to the GameCube smoothly

I'm sure someone else has already said it but the issues you had with the batteries are probably because the Pi is more fussy about its voltages than an old Gameboy would be, closer those batteries are to dead the further they'll wander away from the full charge voltage. Also a lot of the other issues you've raised could be fixed either with a better/different OS or with the next generation of Pi 0. This also means that if it uses the same I/O pin layout it may be able to do something more fancy with the next Pi update.

@Aria Casteal Inject GBA games as VC titles, instead of using an emulator. They run near flawlessly thanks to utilizing the little bit of GBA hardware that the 3DS has onboard. Search "New Super Ultimate Injector for 3DS." It let's you take Gameboy, Gameboy Color, GBA, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Game Gear, and TurboGrafx-16 roms and convert them into 3DS Virtual Consoles titles in .cia format that you can then install directly to the Home Screen using an app like FBI.

my fav GameBoy has to be Balloon Kid highly recommend it :) ...main issue is the boot up and shutdown want something straight away specially on the move. But I'll stick to my OG gameboy pocket or use my EZ Flash cart with Gameboy Micro

Yes it is, i spoke to retroflag and they confirmed that the blinking power led is a battery indicator. When it blinks they are almost empty.
