My guess, considering how clean that storage area is. Its the paint. Look it up, they did a Panarama on it a a decade ago about folk complaining that certain paints have a compound that smells like pee. 360's have built in PSU and use a 3 kettle lead. Everyone console with a kettle lead is heavy.

Yeh mate I bought some typos dulux one time and I was freaking out where this smell was coming from and I read up about other people and that’s where I found out this new range the chemicals or whatever was inside it.

@@wutang6020 Per google - This is a well-known issue across the paint industry, experts say. Graham Hill, managing director of ECHA Microbiology in Cardiff, said bacteria can grow in the paint can and release hydrogen sulphide gas, which causes a bad egg smell, and ammonia, which can explain the urine smell.

Good call. I repainted a room after we moved house and a few days later the walls stank like cat piss, especially when the sun was on them. I repainted that room eleven times over several weeks using various sealants and anti-fungal paints. We even had a consultant from the paint company contact us because it was eye wateringly smelly! Turned out it was something to do with the paint having gone off after being in storage for a long time. If that’s the case with yours then I recommend getting some of the anti-fungal/enzyme paint.

Considering all the old electronic you have in there the chance of the capacitors leaking over time is pretty common, not to mentionthe batteries, that will be your smell IMO.

@@TheGebs24 if you can isolate the smell to one console then yes, but as long as the battery acid or cap fluid hasn't runied the PCB board you should be able to remove the leaking cap/battery clean the board with rubbing alchol then resolder a new cap.

After cleaning whatever you find try storing it with tumble dryer sheets inbetween, I've had great results in the past when buying joblots that stunk of wee or smoke.

Sorry to be petty, but you really shouldn't stack boxed consoles on top of one another, the cardboard will start to weaken and lose its shape, and even splits in the boxes may occur.

Since you seem to be having no luck, locating the smell, a bit of a far out suggestion but busted capacitors can have a strong fish-like odour. Maybe something needs to be recapped?

@@TheGebs24 circuits can get damaged, especially if there's a battery inside, on the board, they can leak, and damage other bits; not sure about a long term smell but certainly capacitors do generate a distinct odour if they leak, suddenly.

@@TheGebs24 one of my CD32 consoles and another year my 3DO both had bloating capacitors and one smelt like rotten fish, the other had a very mild smell that was more like stale paper (imagine newspaper kept in a garage for a decade, not damp smell, more just 'stale old' smell. Also, the caps can bloat out but the consoles probably will still work, over time you'll notice random restarts or just the smell getting worse, then they can leak. So yep. Not sure about most consoles but ebay sellers often provide recapping services and some remaining electronic stores that deal in 2nd hand consoles. As others have said, maybe best to space the boxes out a bit, keep consoles with games, let the air circulate, but yep if it's a bloating or leaky capacitor then you'll know it by simply powering on the consoles for a few minutes and sniffing the venting areas

We had a family of mouse in our house that we had to deal with, but there was no smell of any urin. Rats however they can produce terrible smell i have heard. That said leaky caps from old consoles can smell like old fish or piss if you want. So that could be the problem, hope you manage to sort it out 🤞

Leaking electrolytic capacitor was my first thought as well. Better find it and repair it before it destroys the pcb.

I notice that smell whenever i go into a CEX, reason why i straight away clean anything i buy from CEX or eBay. CEX stores have a special smell, mix of a public toilet, a pet shop and BO. The amount of bacteria second hand electroins hold, inside and out (consoles, controllers and boxes) can cause "funny" smells, especially trapped in a compact space. Opening the doors most likely cleared the smell.

Gebs! It might be the Dulux pair if you have used it! Another thing and please don’t take this wrong but did the smell smell fishy? If it did then please check your electrics 😉 when wires burn or heat up it’s normally the plastic covering you sometimes get it when new wires have been installed but also if there is heat. Ok good luck

If you find something that smells throw a few fabric softener sheets in the box. Helps for games that stink of smoke as well.

I have to say your storage of such treasures is appalling! It looks like you kicked them in there and their condition will be suffering for it. That and it’s a closed off area with zero ventilation!?? The cardboard will be getting damp, just like Jess identified. Definitely not glue marks on the inside of that box luvvy….me thinks you have rose tinted glasses with it. And to top it off, those consoles are not getting used at all. And as others have said, the risk of blown Caps or leakage from batteries is quite high….which could also be causing a smell?? GET IT SORTED YOUNG LADY!! (That’s my Dad voice talking 😂)

@@TheGebs24hahaha I believe you luvvy, thousands wouldn’t lol. It certainly looked like a damp stain to me. Those plastic dehumidifier boxes are supposed to be pretty good, so that would be a start. But you ought to stack things a bit better imho. Bigger/heavier boxes at the bottom with smaller/lighter boxes on top….come on girl, you’ve played Tetris! Haha. I’d also fit air vents to the doors and get some air circulation. Just a cheap plastic one from Amazon would do the job, with an array of holes drilled behind them. Not a mega easy task, but very worth it to preserve your treasures 😉

It's not good I've also had similar + also where mold suddenly appeared, (from unknown to me the air vent got blocked), it's very very upsetting & stressful to see our prize possessions & very valuable collections affected, also please ensure no liquids can have entered consoles & peripherals & subsequent damage! But also remember there's the other nasty smell to consider that could be hidden with your present situation of cap leakage 😢 My thoughts are seriously with you, it's so so horrible & 💔 breaking, n some people go oh it's only a ,,,,,,, 🤬 Chin up girl we loves you n your suring of life ❤❤❤

i had a pest control guy out to my house this month for the same reason, he said hes been sooo busy coz of mice and rats been an explosion of them breeding and alot of their habitats have been taken

It’s probably just trapped air and musty, you could do with some vents in the cupboard to air out, you don’t want items to condensate and become mouldy. Also I’ve recapped a lot of my console and leaking electrolytic caps stink like fish, I would open them all up and have a gander 👍🏻😎🍺.

I collect Japanese mega drive games (just like the artwork more) and I have that Lethal Enforcers set in the NTSC-J variant. It’s good because the gun is region free and it works with Sega CD games too like Mad Dog Mcree, Who Shot Johnny Rock and of course the Sega CD version of Lethal Enforcers 1 & 2. These days they’d make you buy a new gun.

I was never allowed video games as a kid, but a mate lent me his SNES that smelled funny when it heated up. He told me it was because his junkie brother was sick on it. It was 100% a sick smell but it was worth it lol

If it's came from storage like a loft or garage if there's been much or rats that's been around the boxes there urine will stink n linger for a very long time, I hope you can at least try get rid of some of the smell, I know it's rotten especially rat's urine x good luck 🍀 👍

This is why i got rid of a load of stuff. Things just become dust gatherers and start breaking and eventually become worthless. Thats the doenside to collecting at some point there is a maximum you can have after that your just hording stuff that never gets used or shown and it goes to shit.

Electronic consoles do not keep. The idea of collecting them doesn’t make much sense. If you aren’t using them often enough to monitor when something starts to go bad, it usually ends up catastrophic. But who am I?

You are very right about that. Storing consoles in boxes for collecting purposes is not wise, they often tend to break by not using them at all.
