Malin & Tom
May is mental health awareness month, and we feel like mental health should be easier to talk about. We would like to be a part of normalising the discussion around mental health, particularly for people who are struggling.
Having recently been through a cancer battle, we have had our share of mental health challenges. We have also recently lost a very close friend who took his own life a few weeks ago, so we feel very strongly about bringing the stigma around talking about mental health to an end.
In this vlog, we help Malin's parents to put their sailboat in the water, we show off Malin's new crocheted cuddly toy collection, and we talk about our views on mental health.

Who are we?

We are a young 'Swenglish' adventure family, that consists of Swedish Malin, English Tom, and babies Charlie & Isabella, who are half and half. We love all kinds of adventures, including travelling around Sweden and beyond in our self-built campervan called Sunny, we're currently travelling the warmer climates of southern Europe and are glad to be cancer-free, after a rough battle with colon cancer.

I love your videos! I am a retired mental health therapist who specialized in grief and loss due to illness, trauma and death. I created a children’s bereavement center called Olivia‘s house in York, Pennsylvania. I couldn’t agree more with you and have studied suicide and the ramifications of subjects that are closed to people talking about them, my entire career. My prayer for you and Malin is that you enjoy every minute because life doesn’t promise us anything more than the day in front of us! I have made a donation because I lost a high school classmate and friend, Doug Goebel, to suicide. Doug and I had been in touch on one of my infrequent visits to my parents' in West Virginia and I will always treasure the day Doug gave me as he drove me to various parts of the state, such as Tamarack craft shop and Thurmond an abandoned railway town, once. I knew Doug was a recovered alcoholic and had mental health problems but it still shocked me when news of his suicide reached me. When I lived in Dublin, two of the singing families that I knew lost sons to suicides. None of us know what is around the corner which is why we not only should enjoy our own lives but also look around and grab the hand of someone else who might just need it. Thanks for making mental health a topic on your page.

Hi Tom and Malin Mental health is a talk about taboo nowadays. It’s a hidden illness like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome all linked to anxiety and depression that isn’t seen. Absolutely heartbreaking. Am so sorry about your friends demise. It takes a lot of mental energy to see the awareness of dark depression to do what he did. Some say it’s a cowards way of dealing with things but never say that as you never know when it’s going to knock on your door. God bless your friend. I've found that people don't really want to hear about it. Mental health, that is. Mine was kickstarted early by parental abuse. On a brighter note, I would definitely buy Malin's creations! I'm in the US though, not sure you'd deliver that far.

Lovely tribute for your friend Nick, I’m in England and as you know the government massively underfunds the nhs , there’s been so many murders lately that mentally ill people have committed, if mental health care was properly funded, maybe they wouldn’t have carried out their crimes and the victims would be alive. I also suffer from mental illnesses and I talk about it a lot, one thing that needs more awareness is eating disorders and lack of adequate treatment. Anyway malin’s mum is very pretty and I love how excited the children are, they have a zest for life xx

The weather in Sweden reminds me of weather here in Canada, sunny & warm one day and cold and rainy the next! 😂 That was a beautiful tribute to your friend Nick - his music is a beautiful sound track to your videos. Mental health is part of everyone. Thank you for talking about your close friend Nick. I worked with people whose mental health was not so great. Sadly, one of my close friends has just passed, too. We should have the autopsy results next week. Her Mental health was really bad. She lived on the outskirts of Nottingham. ❤❤❤❤

You are right so many people don't talk about it because there's a stigma of being hush-hush about how you mentally feel. I had a friend of mine who also committed suicide, and it was devastating. Ir is taboo for me to discuss my mental health issues with my sister and my 2 adult children. In fact they avoid me completely. Disconnected from me. I’m not able to see my grandchildren. I’ll be 70 yrs old in a few weeks. I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist for almost 15 years who has changed and increased medication as needed. Life is extremely lonely.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your dear friend to suicide. We need to be able to talk freely about mental health. I think many want to open up about their struggles but feel they will be looked at strangely. It has helped me to talk about my family issues very much. Our family lost our oldest sister Kathleen to lung and uterine cancer. Our other sister Maureen was dealing with her loss and the loss of her 34-year-old marriage and other issues which pushed her to take her own life. This was devastating to our family! I ended up having a breakdown while trying to deal with my own health issues and a divorce. Thank goodness for anti-depressants, family, friends, and doctors! I hope and wish mental health issues would become more accepting and people try to help and listen more. Life can get better; we just have to be more accepting and helpful!

Thank you for talking about this issue. As a sister of two brothers with bipolar depression and a daughter of a mother with schizophrenia I know two much about it. Currently still in grief about another brother‘s death with only 62.
