THIS IS NOT The Best Daily Trainer Of 2024 - Nike Pegasus 41 FIRST RUN - welcome back to another video and today I am sharing with you my first run experience in the Nike Pegasus 41 and I can confirm this is not the best daily trainer of 2024! I was hoping that a 4 year break from the Nike Pegasus would be enough time for the shoe to improve, but clearly I was wrong.
A bit harsh? What are your thoughts?

This shoe ran better for me after a few runs. We must all remember that although this shoe is a running shoe, Nike is trying to make money and let’s face it, runner’s are a small tiny portion of the Pegasus sales base. It’s really to please the mass public for a good daily walking/running/lifestyle/casual shoe. Be honest, Nikes runners are a lot better looking than other brands. Functionally, I agree Nike is lacking in the performance aspect.

The one Pegasus pair I bought, the 38, is immeasurably worse than the other brands' equivalents (except Adidas). 'Dull' is the right word. 'Flat' too. Maybe it's designed for heel strikers.

"Terrible" is eye catching! I have got the Peg 41 but due to an Achilles injury that is putting any serious running on hold for a bit, I have found it to be a good walking shoe (16 miles now). That said I found the Peg 41 very familar compared to recent Pegs and on a little "burst" of actual running found it to be what I would expect of a Peg. I was pleasantly surprised in the 39 and got them to 250 miles having found the 37 too shallow, largely skipped the 38 and also did a fair amount in the 40. So I think with the Pegs it is a case of what you want out of a shoe. If it is neutral, relatively low cost running shoe with some ground feel, relatively high drop, some structure/support, firmish ride and no "go faster" tech that is also decent for other leisure usage then it ticks a lot of boxes. If it is say a super soft "super" trainer or a super light, soft but neutral and unstructured trainer (like the SL2) then going to be disappointed. I think what you saying is that you wish the Pegasus was not a Pegasus. The reportedly upcoming Pegasus Plus (aka Turbo 4) could be that. Also I always think these are only Nike's 5th "Road Running" shoe by price. Which other brand's 5th shoe in a category get so much love/hate/meh/hype/interest/disdain.
@TheFODRunner

You make a good point Tim… wishing the Pegasus wasn’t a Pegasus… but don’t you think it’s weird how it’s possibly one of the only shoes in a long run if versions that’s never really had a big facelift? I can only think of the Clifton that’s never changed drastically? Otherwise this has just been poor updates year after year… in my opinion 😉
@TimGrose
@TimGrose Месяц назад
@@TheFODRunner I found a picture I had of some Pegs from 2001 and for sure they were different then. Might well be remembering through rose tinted glasses but they felt more like a "racer trainer" in that version. A few versions later they had changed to be more of a plodder and I gave up on them until more recent years when clearly had settled on the current use case. As for shoes not changing much then perhaps the Brooks Ghost but I note you said the 16 was better for you than the 15 which I kind of had similar thoughts about to your Peg 41 ones! Maybe also something like a Kayano is a shoe that I consistently thought (or hoped) would ever need to use but it does seem modern stability shoes aren't the stiff heavy bricks they used to be. I can recall plenty of times when I liked a version of a shoe only for the next one to be somewhat different. Nike with a few versions of the Zoom Elite I can recall either loving or largely hating version to version. adidas did same with versions of the Boston. I guess in recent years shoes like the Speed and Novablast have been "fairly" similar over 4 versions. Is the Kinvara (which never tried) another one that has stayed largely consistent. I've just spotted a Peg 35 to hand and picking it up, it looks very similar to the more recent ones but the midsole (Cushlon I presume) feels very firm just pressing it and the stack looks noticeably less than now and many "complain" they now have ground feel. Could be a video in its own right as shoes have clearly changed a lot since about 2018-9 even if maybe sometimes we perhaps think they haven't. Always remember when the Clifton 1 got rerealeased due to "popular" demand it seems nobody really actually liked it as much as they thought they did. Remember when the Novablast 1 came in it seemed "radical" as was fairly soft high stack. When I tried that on again recently it actually felt relatively firm!

The next Pegasus Turbo (Plus Ithink ?) better have a bit more stability them the first two versions, and the weight got to be far below 250g at size 8 UK. The amount of hate the Pegasus gets from RU-vidrs is crazy. The Pegasus has always been a classic daily trainer, designed to do just a little bit of everything. You don’t need a massive amount of stack under your shoe for daily training. Not enough pop? It’s not a tempo shoe. This guys review is completely bias and has probably never ran in a pegasus. True Pegasus fans will love this model. It’s not designed to be a super shoe. People expect so much out of a shoe now and days, you want it to do the running for you…

@@iGo0gIe appreciate the feedback 👊 it’s my 3rd Pegasus… I’ve had the 36/37 and now the 41. All of them have been pretty lifeless, I don’t need all the stack, I’ve got plenty of shoes like this that I use that are better in most ways. And it’s really only the midsole that’s poor, the rest of the shoe is pretty decent… just really looking for Nike to develop something a bit better than react or react x!

The title gave me a good chuckle. I think Ben Parkes summed it up well at the end of his review, it's not the worst shoe but it can't compete at it's price point anymore since Nike decided to up the price out of it's more budget category. Unfortunately i don't think the Pegasus is a serious running shoe anymore as you say it's a casual or walking shoe. Nike should forget about the gimmicks ( pods) and sort their midsole foams out. Im five feet nine and just under eleven stone so it's not a case of size and weight.

I use my Pegasus as a sneaker. The padding on the tongue and heel makes it easy to slip in and out. TBH it is what you are looking for. The Peg 32 was really top, it did allow nice speedwork, then I went back to Asics & Mizuno as to me the Peg was too finetuned. Eventually I got back in it from Pegasus 39 and 40. If you look for pop, I understand, but I run for health and touristic reasons: no training program but any day I can be out running 30-40k, and the Pegasus does a great job. No focus on speed, it just protects the foot and forces nothing. Pricepoint... yeah, but that’s Nike. Other brands will follow. Asics Cumulus or a Mizuno Wave Rider is expensive these days as well...

they work really well for military PT. doing a 5 mile, then having to do 100m shuttle runs or an obstacle course after for example. you don't want to be running on too much of a stack when you need to be nimble. and you also don't want the midsole to be too soft and compromise stability when changing directions quickly. i could see why running more than 10 or 15 miles with these wouldn't be the best experience. but i don't think they are for "runners" per-se. they are for people who include some running in their fitness regiment.

Heavy, slappy and absolutely no fun to run in since the 36. Nike have lost their way with daily trainers the past 3 years or more. So many better options from Saucony, ASICS, New Balance and Adidas to name a few.

React X is crap, the infinity run 4 is awful with it, I've done about 4 runs and just can't put any more in it, I get foot pain in them that I've never had in any other brand or even other Nike trainers in the past. It just feels dead underfoot and gives nothing. I've had nearly every variation of the Pegasus since the 32 up to 39 and it went downhill from the 37 onwards in my opinion. There was 1 decent version in the last couple of years and that was the Trail 4, it feels way better underfoot than the 39. Other brands simply have way better daily trainer offerings nowadays

It's so interesting how personal fit is. I always appreciate your perspective...even though I couldn't disagree with you more on this one. A few things. - The 27mm stack height is 24mm of foam under foot and 3mm lugs. - The Pegasus doesn't need to "be innovative", it needs to a Pegasus. Everything you said you disliked in it is why I like it. It's a trainer and I want it to be neutral, cushioned and get out of the way. - Rockers, max stack foams and overly soft foams have their place, but not in a daily shoe. I want the training effect from me doing the work... not the shoe. The old, "run with your feet, not your shoes" idea. - Not a shoe for serious runners? Tell that to the majority of Japanese Nike professionals and elites. The vast majority of them are doing their non-workout running in Pegs, have for years. Only occasionally will you see them use a Vomero, almost never the Invincible. - The InfinityRN 4 is not a running shoe...it's a lifestyle shoe that you can jog in. Again though...it's fascinating how personal fit is. Admittedly I'm a pegasus fan...but the Peg41 is one of the best ones in years, since maybe the 37...

In glad that you like it buddy 👊 as you say, it’s so individual when it comes to these things, you can probably tell that from my shoe choices in general! 1) makes sense on the stack if they include the lugs… it definitely doesn’t feel like 27mm foam! 2) I disagree on that one… but also it’s not a strong argument because I guess it’s a brands choice, but most of the other brands evolve their shoes in some way and bar a few exceptions, we’ve seen some radical changes shoe models over the years… mainly down to listening to feedback. My bugbear with Nike is they seem to take no user feedback on board, when people have been screaming out for a change for years. You can tell that from all the other comments on the video so far. 3) agree - there is a place for it and in a daily I also enjoy “you do the work and not the shoe”, there shouldn’t be a plate in a daily trainer. I take that mindset into my vo2 workouts, hence why I use the Kinvara 14… low stack, no plate, you do the work 👊 4) Intersting - id say that I don’t see any European runners or American runners repping the pegs, they tend to do structure , vomero , invincible… so Japan stands on its own there 😂 5) never tried the infinity run… so can’t comment but I know a fair few people use it in their rotation and it feels like Nike market this heavily for running as opposed to lifestyle. Much respect buddy, I’m glad you enjoy them! We shall agree on some and disagree on others! 😀

@@TheFODRunner I think the new tier structure Nike is moving into (standard/plus/premium) will allow them to push the core models and “innovate” while leaving the base model unchanged. Theoretically it’s the best of both worlds there. We will see how it works in practice. I do think there has been subtle iteration on the Pegasus since the 36. It’s never radical, but it’s there. I do agree that it has a totally different set of product goals than the race shoes Nike does.

I’m no Nike fanboy but think about who this shoe is geared towards and the other shoes at a similar price point. Brooks Ghost, NB880v14, saucony ride 17, Hoka Clifton 9, Asics cumulus, etc. none of these are game changers. They are all solid reliable durable daily trainers. Nothing fancy but get the job done for the most part.
