It's a team thing. run game is one issue, and it's surely not the only issue.
@christhompson6010

it's much bigger than that. hard to run if you can't control the line of scrimmage. this team is leaking from every area. Depending on who they face determines which area gets exposed. what's worse is they know it but dont have an answer for it.

Kyle over uses his core players. There’s plenty of talent on this team, but he always leans on his core 4-5 players. Any one of them goes down, this team can’t win.

Look further back, there were phases of the same deficits already in the dynasty times of the 80's and 90's. Bill Walsh started out with a basically standard O-line and developed his West-Coast offense, that called for lighter, faster O-linemen, who could pull, trap and go downfield on screens. Therefor, SF never was in need of a real power-back and they still could cope with only slightly bigger D-Linemen in pass blocking. Some problems began, with the arrival of the first generation of 300+lbs DT, which made pass blocking more difficult, yet sweeps and dump-offs to the RB was still available. When in the late 80's the likes of Marshall&Co (NYG) and White&Co (Philli) arrived, the D-Lines became massive AND fast. Who remembers, like me, the calls in the stands "no more sweeps, no more sweeps"? Some experiments with heavier O-Linemen had rather mixed results, because they were to slow. They could make up for the rising problems against power defenses, because of an excellent core of skill position players. But after the Denver-SB, they couldn't really withstand the onslaught from the power teams anymore. In the playoffs, they couldn't compete with a 260-280lbs O-Line, until they beefed up over 280 avg. Only during the Harbaugh SB-run, SF had an OL, in elite weight-class, who could move AND overpower defenses. SF is traditionally very resistant to system change, but the current outfit of the line is outdated, Some teams are capable to put pressure along the whole width of the line, if they wish so, so they destroy the pass protection as well as the lateral running game - just through penetration by raw power. If they wanna keep the system, they gotta unify the OL in bigger mass and speed - you can't carry a starter who possesses only one of these traits. For the new generation of SF fans, watch old 49ers games on youtube and you will find out, there's nothing new under the sun, not even the problems.

@@AFLOVEable Good analysis. I watched the Niners in the 80s during days of Camelot as Walsh referred to them. Randy Cross and Guy McIntyre leading Roger Craig on a sweep was a thing to behold. Teams adjust and change. Niners were dominant in '94 season and good another 5 years. The NFL has studied and adjusted to 9ers, especially this off season. You can bet they have a target on their back this year. Adjust and grow the strategy and the roster accordingly. For example, did you see WR Cowing smoke his defender for long bomb yesterday? That is something fresh and new. Maybe Aiyuk's unfortunate injury will result in something new and exciting.
@AFLOVEable
@AFLOVEable 4 часа назад
@@donkloos9078 Thank you! I never was one to single out individuals in a team as scapegoats, as many 'new generation' fans do, but rather look at units. And I see, that the OL is not capable of counter-punching brute-force attacks from defenses, because the line is not balanced in physical strength. I've less issue, with the season being not so great, than with the behavior of modern "fantasy football"-fans, throwing everyone under the bus. But maybe it's just a cultural thing, having a wider view on things, from Europe.

Yes. I get a little annoyed that so much conversation does NOT focus on the trenches, where teams win or lose games. No one wants to say that Trent Williams is gassed, but he is. Their one bright light is the rookie Puni. They have ignored prioritizing the O line for too long. Is this still fall out from Trey Lance - their lack of depth? So many superstars, but they can't do much without a good o line. CMC isn't going to save them; I doubt he'll come back like he was before this latest injury.

CMC provides a more dynamic offense, motions, and a contingency check-down option. The playbook was clearly designed with Deebo and CMC in mind. CMC was limited in training camp and has not yet been able to return this season. CMC's run style and Deebo's dynamic plays both help to spread out the opposing defensive schemes. Without them, Purdy has to stay longer in the pocket looking downfield, when covered 'man' with no separation, the OL has to protect longer, which proved tougher and tougher with fatigue in a long drawn-out game.

I agree that before the CMC era, the Niners struggled to score in the red zone. However, relying solely on CMC to address this issue is not an effective solution. The primary problem lies with the offensive line. They have consistently failed to prevent the defense’s front line from penetrating when the defense doesn’t have to protect the entire field. It’s perplexing why, under the Kyle Shanahan regime, the Niners never had a strong offensive line.

@bryanwhitton1784 6 часов назад
@@joeschweitzer9780 Exactly! being able to run sets up the defense to act a specific way. This allows other plays to work because they depend on the defense not being there. If we can't run we can't PAP, ZR or BL. If the defense doesn't have to respect our running then we can't pass either. That is what happened Sunday. Throughout this game the O-line couldn't move the D-line. No Movement, no holes to run through. Even worse, they couldn't pass block either. And when we did get something there were the penalties. It is very depressing. But I have been a fan since 1972 and am in no way going to give up today.

Appreciate your thoughts and analysis, I think it is even keeled and not over reactive. Shanahan needs to learn to adjust his schemes a bit to cater to the personnel he has. It seems that he is unwilling to stray from the playbook even though its effectiveness is reduced when the players needed are not able to play. Andy Reid is able to make do without Pacheco and Rice because he can tweak here and there. Having Mahomes is of course a big plus, but even he needs a play to call execute.

To all the Purdy haters, lol Purdy will get 50-60M/year next year regardless how this season ends. Even Dak got paid and he's a much lesser QB. QB is the most important position in the NFL and affects the outcome of winning or losing in the NFL the most, Mahomes played bad too and was 0 td and 2 int but he still made enough plays to help his team win though he really didnt have a true #1 WR yesterday. BA was over paid, should have traded him or make him play on his 5th year option to prove his worth, ALL the top paid WRs in the NFL are over paid, look at Chase Lamb etc wtf are they doing for their team? 3-3, 3-4, pay these WRs top money and they still dont help you win as much as who's playing at QB. And realize who was not on offense on the field yesterday to help Purdy score tds and gain yards: 30M+23.5M+15M+20M, BA DEEBO JJ CMC, SAYS ALL. 9ers are a borderline playoff team this year, they will be lucky if they make the playoffs so dont keep your hopes up too high going forward, but Purdy will get paid next year 50-60M/yr and depending on what happens it's highly likely BA or Deebo will be traded by next year so money can go else where, why Pearsall and Cowing was drafted 🎉🎉🎉🎉

You identified the right player but perhaps the wrong problem. The main CMC issue is that they have build so many of the wrinkles of this offense on him first and deebo second, that near the goal line we have backups running vanilla plays without them. And thats a big part of why we can gain yards but have efficiency look bad. We can't run in the red zone, because no one respects our receiving threats in the red zone, and we are giving them nothing surprising to think about.

OL 2023 = OL 2024, except for rookie Puni. After TB manhandled KC in SB, KC revamped their OL the next year and are now looking at first SB Three-peat. 9ers trying to repeatedly run against KC 8-man front is not efficiencent, especially when they expect it on 3rd and 1 or 3rd and goal.
@bryanwhitton1784
@bryanwhitton1784 16 часов назад
I don't often disagree with you but I do a little bit here. The problem is with the O-line. They have decent backs but there has to be a hole or at least movement for a back to make positive yards. This may take a couple of years to improve between drafts and acquisitions. But the offense must have a better more consistent O-line. CMC is not going to be here forever even after he comes back. We have to have an O-line that can consistently make gains against any defense and be able to pass protect for the quarterback. Puni has made the right side better not just with his performance but he has made the right tackle better at the same time. Williams is not going to be around forever. We needed to start on his replacement two years ago. There, my $.02 worth. I sure hope BA is not as bad as it looked. In years past I had to play with the flu, it sucked. But at the rank amateur level I played at just having a body on the field was useful. At the NFL level if you aren't at near 100% you are a liability. I feel for Deebo.

The 49ers were struggling with their run game last year towards the end of the year, WITH Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers have a DO NOT have an answer for strong defenses problem. The bottom line is the 49ers offense struggles when they face strong defenses. CMC is not going to save the 49ers. There must be better planning for "how to" overcome a variety of situations. The 49ers must improve their situational awareness. The 49ers must have a variety of answers to problems. More functional creativity that actually works and can be consistently executed by the team.
@Wolfeson28
@Wolfeson28 9 часов назад
I certainly can't deny how good or how important CMC is, but the issues running the ball *have* to be bigger than just him. Going back beyond 2022, the 49ers had a great run game for multiple years before CMC ever came along, and Mason is a perfectly serviceable running back now. The overall efficiency issue could be either on the running back and/or the blocking, but the whole "not being able to pick up 1 yard on 3rd and 1" problem is clearly on the blockers. The efficiency of the running game should not collapse like this simply because we have to make do with merely a very good running back instead of an elite one. I've said several times before that we're seeing a clear trend of opposing defenses focusing more and more on stuffing the run as the first step to stifling our offense, including the Chiefs in the Super Bowl (when we *had* CMC). Defenses are adapting to counter our focus on the run, and it looks like Shahanan is struggling to find the necessary counter-adjustments. Just emphasizing the pass more (if that's actually what Shanahan is trying to do) isn't really the answer because teams are figuring out how to limit that too when we're too one-dimensional. Like you said, balance is the key, which means both aspects of the offense need to be working effectively.

In other words, are they built in such a way that they can find ways to win even when the finely tuned machine doesn’t seem to working as it should? I could see arguments working on both sides here, and certainly, every team goes through ups and downs, but it does seem to me that the 49ers, unlike the Chiefs or the Patriots before them, are built to potentially win ONE Super Bowl (if ALL the intricate pieces fall into place) and not several.

He has no “instinctual” feel for the game. When to go for it. No killer instinct when ahead. His refusal to play rookies are younger players is also now exposed. Cowing is good. Foerster said if you have great play makers you can do with a less than perfect O-line....I'm call BS on that crap. I saw Brocks press conference where he said it's on him...Well that commendable of him to take the blame BUT that blame lands squarely on Kyle Shanahan and nobody else. The O-line wouldn't get called for holding as much if we had better O-linemen and Kyles play calling was an absolutely embarrassment. Why would keep on running to the perimeter when they have just as much speed at linebacker as we do? OK so running up the middle wasn't working either OK THAT goes right back to not drafting O-line. Brock throws 3 picks....He had NO time and when he did the D-line got such a push that he either couldn't see defenders in/near his passing lanes or his pass gets tipped or his arm gets hit....It ALL goes back to Kyle. Fine Kyle draw up the plays but for God's sake hire an OC to call plays because you are terrible at it and PLEASE in 2025 draft some damn offensive linemen with some early picks so Brock can do what he does best (Pick defenses apart) instead of him having to make time to throw by holding the ball and trying to make something happen. If they open it after the bye, CMC will still need probably a week+ at the minimum to ramp up, and who knows how long to get up to game speed and game shape. The season may very well be nothing more than an exercise in futility at that point. 10 games left with some tough opponents does not bode well for a 49ers team who look absolutely broken. They are playing undisciplined, non-complementary, lazy football. Not to mention other issues like BA out, Deebo out, JJ out, CMC out, Greenlaw out, Williams' regression, Ward's regression, Purdy committing far too many turnovers and costly mistakes. All 3 of the picks yesterday were either bad reads or just very bad throws. The only bright spot of Purdy's play is that bis extension is getting cheaper and cheaper week by week.

What is even more concerning Kyle fired the defensive coordinator that had defense that outplayed his offense in SB. But he has had a HORRIBLE special teams last year this year and cost them a SB but he hasn’t done anything in that aspect. To the point special teams is costing this team critical wins. That is baffling to me.

I say if the season is lost is to continue giving our young guys reps so they can gain more experience. Start trading players like Deebo, Kittle & so we can get younger. As much as I love Purdy give Mordacai reps & see what he can do.He is athletic with stronger arm wouldn't hurt to give Purdy competetion before shelling out big money for Brock

So, are you(se) advocating Jed Fire Shanahan? At this point in the season? Have you forgotten similar circumstances over the last 4-5 seasons? Coach has his flaws like of us have. However, he's been good enough to be in 2 SB's & 4 NFC Championship games. Only heard a few half-hearted criticisms then. He'll get this team back on track despite waaay too many injuries. Have some faith.

Hey David, can you please ask all coaches (esp Sorensen) to cover their mouth when they talk to players or make calls during the games. We were at the games and saw them talking on the screen. Anyone who learn to read lips can tell what was said. This could be one way to help.

There were NO designed runs and Brock was just off with his confidence throwing 3 picks. they had him rattled. I wonder about the red uniforms also kind of confusing. We could have used some sweeps or trick plays. By the way doesn't Shanahan usually make the calls himself? Is this offensive coordinator new?
@awoodfin3903
@awoodfin3903 13 часов назад
Wait, hold on, I always hear how the Shanahan run scheme is top notch and any decent RB will thrive. Wasn't that the argument for not keeping Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr and others? Also, I thought Kyle was the QB whisperer, that's how he could win with Jimmy G and now Brock, right? Are you telling me, it's actually the players who matter? Then we should praise John Lynch more and Kyle less, right? I think it's safe to say, Lynch has probably given Kyle the best roster in the league since 2019. No more excuses, please, that's a tendency for lesser organizations.

Y’all who talk: “oh it’s Kyle’s fault this” or “Kyle needs to be fired that” are acting tone deaf and not analyzing the bigger picture. The reason behind the losses are due to: drops, speed, special teams, injuries! None of which have really nothing to do with Kyle, that includes Special teams.

Way too many problems with this team to write here but at the end of the day all 9ers need to do is correct this and win the division and be the dark horse everyone counts out. Team is way too talented to go down like this. We can make up for Aiyuk. I think Pearsal has the potential to be a nice possession receiver. Thats something we could use right now. And hopefully Cowing can contribute. Give these guys some time with Brock and you never know what can come of it. Need to beat Cowboys and we'll only be 1 game worse this year in loss column than last year heading into bye. Not all is lost. Yet...

Purdy didnt play well. The 49ers have things they need to improve on. Special teams have become a nail bitter now. Its not bad the special teams is horrible. The kicking situation has turned into a joke. People will bring up aiyuks injury. He hasnt played well this season. They have enough at wideout especially if cmc gets back after the bye. I knew greenlaw injury mattered. But man oh man every week its more noticeable.

For offense - Watch JTO breakdown of Brocks games. He highlights the problems with our dropback game and offense. For defense - its time admit Kourek isnt good and over hyped. This Frankenstein defense of wide 9, seattle zone with fangio pass defense concepts and now Staley stuff isnt working. We have no identity. Nothing to hang our hat on. The wide 9 doesnt work in this new fast pass era. It works ok in 3rd n long situations but not on any other down. We are always a 1 second late for a pressure or sack or cant tackle the QB who escapes and runs or leave soooooo much space in the gaps. They just step up in pocket for a huge gain or run for a huge gain. Special teams - fire ST coach. This is crazy how crappy it is

The oline is terrible, the weakness is still the weakness. Brendel and Mckivitz is bad. Purdy didnt have a good game but were basically at a point where we cant protect and the receivers cannot get open and the QB has to make a play. I dont get why KS doesnt use Cowing, this team lacks speed and Cowing can be and should be used in a CMC type of receiving role, which he is capable of. Why run Ronnie Bell out there when he is no where close to as talented as Cowing. We saw the potential he brings yesterday in his short stint when forced into action. KS needs to get his head out of his behind and start designing plays to best accentuate his players strengths and not try to fit a square peg into a round hole.

If we don’t draft a center or RT next year it’ll be just the same story! We also need young players to play more meaning we need more speed! Campbell is too slow for be out there in coverage! Kyle gotta more balance he always starts the game throwing a lot but that’s not how his system is played! This team is a run first then play action team that’s how it’s built! Our receivers can’t beat man press coverage also

No more BS enabling the fraud! He is mediocre at best. But folds and makes huge mistakes in big games. Why the hell didnt he run the ball first half? Kyle is the limitation because he sticks to his "genius" game plan & can't adjust when it's shutdown or the star players get hurt. Andy Reid, like all GREAT COACHES, is chameleon and can adjust on the fly with whatever player they have available. Jim Harbaugh had a retread QB & made it work as soon as he got here. He got an unconventional QB draft pick & made it work, hiding his flaws & taking advantage of the few attributes he had to win. Kyle can fake it with the downtrodden teams but get's exposed by great teams with great coaches. The defense, as much as they struggled, did it's job, but it's been the offense that lets the team down in EVERY big game, and that's Kyle's baby. He IS the weak link.

Kyle Shanahan’s offense started being exposed in Cleveland last year with the ravens last year, the Vikings last year and this year, and of course Kansas City twice this year. Do you believe Kyle Shanahan has taken this team as far as he can? Is it time for him to turn over the playcalling? Should John Lynch remove him from the draft room and go after some first and second round draft picks to protect Brock Purdy? Jared Goff was blitzed 55% of the time by the Vikings week 7 and almost had a perfect game. It’s time for the 49ers to draft good offensive lineman to Protect Brock Purdy. We know Brock Purdy can carve up defenses when he’s protected. Like to know your thoughts?

STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! This is an O- line problem and nothing short of that. Kyle and John CHOSE NOT TO ADDRESS THE O LINE in the off season and this is the result. We all knew it was a problem after last year and they did nothing. Quit saying the problem is that they are missing a generational talent at one position and that will fix everything. Behind this O line, CMC will just get hurt. It’s like some of you guys can’t even think. Brock has to run around on every fucking play because we have turnstiles for O linemen (besides Trent and DP).
