Avi left the group in 2017. His mom was sick. The grueling schedule of the band and touring was getting to him. He missed his family, friends and nature. He currently does amazing solo music.

Queen dosen't count as a cover cause they made the song and the best real cover I've seen of this song is by Marc Martel. No one can Top Marc Martel except maby Micheal Spence or Gary Mullen.

Brian May is actually Dr. Brian May. He is an astrophysicist. His PhD thesis a survey of radial velocities in the zodiacal dust cloud" was published in 2007 and is a popular astronomy book of the same name. He started his research in 1970 and then stopped to run around the world in this rock band named Queen. Maybe you've heard of them maybe you haven't I had to Google them. That's sarcasm. The megaphone in a prop. Mitch does not use it in the live performances. the voice you hear when they're looking at the stars is the same voice Mitch uses with the megaphone . The shot at the sky is homage to Brian May. Brian May was so impressed with the video that he posted it on all of his social media sites. The part where Mitch is lying down on the couch and Kevin and Avi are walking beside it are to represent the pallbearers carrying Freddie's coffin . The shot at the end when they're looking up at the sky always puzzled me because there are four shooting stars and I always wondered about that because there are 5 members in PTX. I read in a comment that it's an homage to Queen because there are 4 members in Queen. At least that's how I interpret the shooting stars. The moving couch pays homage to how they started. They worked on this song for five or six years to get it where it is right now.

Oh nice! I never knew that about the part with mitch laying on the couch! Also the way they are all sprawled out on the couch near the end is a tribute to the cover art of Queen's album 'Sheer Heart Attack' and I am pretty sure the way they fanned out and then kirstie jumping up on the couch and they all hide behind her and then step out might have been a tip of the hat to the original song's music video and how the visuals were kind of trippy

1... The list of people at the end of all of their videos is their top tier patreons. 2... Avi (Ahh-vee) needed to slow down from PTXs insane schedule and spend more time with his mom, who was fighting cancer in 2017 when he left the group. There just weren't enough hours in the day for him to keep up with everything. And pop music wasn't really what he was about anyway. He needed to get back to his roots in folk music. His RU-vid channel has his work since leaving PTX, mostly original work with a few oldies like Bill Withers' Lean On Me and The Animals' House Of The Rising Sun. Check it out. He was great in PTX but now he has come into his own and you can see how wasted he was as just PTXs bass.

@@chrispavlich9656 Earning the Grammys wasn't the waste. Spending 6 years as little more than the bass line when he was capable of so much more was just depressing on top of keeping an insane schedule that left no time to be himself was the waste.

@@chrispavlich9656 None of them knew what they signed up for. They only met 1 day before auditions. Then they won, then the record label dropped them and they had to do it the hard way...work their butts off with no down time. He wasn't going to drop out when they needed him to get started. That kind of schedule suited most of them, but Avi needed time built in to balance his depression issues and he had no way of knowing they would hold so much of his music back except just a few songs. Plus he writes his music when he is out in nature...hard to do when you can't get there. They just needed different things. Nobody can know what you will need in 5 or 6 years. And now they all can blaze their own trails.

Avi Kaplan was the original bass. There are videos where he busted speakers 😅. He has a solo career and writes most of his own music. You like the tribal feel so please check Avi's "Change on the rise". Hold your hat so it doesn't get blown off. ENJOY 😊

I never had that "What was THAT" reaction with Pentatonix, because I was previously familiar with other a capella groups in a vaguely similar style (Glad, Rhythm & News, etc.). Pentatonix has more vocal talent, so when I encountered them I was like "These guys are really good", but they didn't introduce me to whole new kind of music like they do a lot of people. However, I *have* had that experience. The first time I heard Doki Doki Morning, by Babymetal. The first time I heard Haggard. The first time I heard the Gameboy Orchestra rendition of BWV 565. These are moments to treasure.

Every time I hear this piece I hear new things. I'm only just into it and have to note how Mitch uses vocal tricks to keep it sounding so alive. There are some notes he holds steady and true, some with the most tightly controlled vibrato possible, others he warms up with vibrator at the end of the note, and finally, there are notes he puts a trill on at the beginning of the note, and then stays put. No matter what, though, the chords are tuned to perfection, and that means that everyone knows how to sing "off key", but in tune. I sang barbershop baritone for years, and in highschool I was in 5 different amazing choirs. Now, my preference is old Blues. The one thing all those have in common is knowing when and how to tune a chord and when and how to use the vocal tricks. Tuning to a 64th of a tone is less about hearing the note change and more about hearing the resultant harmonics, what I call the angels singing. You will hear what I am on about at the very end of this piece. Mitch is holding the lead note as the chord revolves and then resolves. Just a tick past the other parts resolving the chord you will hear the chord wake up. That is Mitch raising his note by a very precise 1/64th of a tone.

I'm glad you mentioned that just about every singer or group has tried to recreate this song, but PTX do not just do the covers, but enhance them and Queen's version would not have been as good as it was, had they not have all their instruments and equipment to do it. PTX blows it out of the park while still paying tribute to Freddy and Brian. Glad you enjoyed it.

Avi can never be replaced, but the new bass (Matt) is quite talented in his own right, even if he's nowhere near as low. To see what he can do, I recommend Sound of Silence, Come Along, New Rules x Are You That Somebody, and Mr Grinch.

When I was at the PTX concert in Denver on November 20, 2022, they sang "Hallelujah" early in the evening, before their voices were tired, and I was surprised by Matt. The second verse had an arrangement I'd never heard before, apparently meant to show off his full range. Now, I don't have a trained ear, so I could be wrong, but I'd bet money that I'm not. Matt's lowest note in that song was just as low as anything I've ever heard from Avi, true blowing-out-the-speakers basso profundo low, and his highest note was well into the tenor range, higher than I ever heard from Avi. I can't find a live stream from the Denver concert to let you hear it yourself, and in the live stream from the Hollywood Bowl concert "Hallelujah" was the final song of the evening, when all their voices were tired - Matt still hits that high note, but he doesn't even attempt the low note. Matt came to them with a good deal less training than Avi had, and his voice seems to have still been developing into what will eventually be his maximum range - I believe that process is likely to continue for another year or two - but *right now* Matt is already spectacular. What he will be a year or two from now will likely be unbelievably spectacular. It's taken some time, but IMO Pentatonix traded up when they replaced Avi with Matt.
