Currently have an X-T4 that I use mainly for photography but also hybrid video stuff. I want to get a second/main camera for video stuff. Was going to go with a BMPCC 6K Pro but, I’ll probably go with the S5 iix for the recording to external storage as well as the 3:2 aspect ratio (open gate?) recording. I would like internal NDs though but I’m sure it would be fine. I’m still considering options. So many good options, it’s hard to go wrong. This is so exciting. Great video as always ☺️.
Yes please, I would LOVE a comparison between this and the FX30! As someone who mainly does RU-vid and looking for my first camera. Mainly looking at this $2000-$2200 price range. I would love to know the benefits and drawbacks of each camera and system. Especially as someone who doesn’t have a camera and hasn’t invested into any ecosystem yet.
I totally agree with you, it‘s a tough upgrade for those who already own an S5 unless they desperately need AF. But then again, most S5 owners made a conscious decision and went for it since they didn‘t prioritize AF anyway. I feel like this is a camera Panasonic could‘ve came up with already 2 years ago. Great video as usual!
True, but I believe Panasonic really wanted to show what is coming for their next generation of cameras, imagine the s1h mark2 with phase detect AF and maybe a stacked sensor, it will be a nearly perfect hybrid camera!
The IBIS is better, support for built-in LUTS and full size HDMI are all reasons to upgrade. The LUT support alone makes this camera more professional. Now as a bonus you have reliable AF in case the situation calls for it. The S5 Mark II simply solves more problems.
@@raredreamfootage the fx3 doesn't have the lut support or even waveform as a "cinema camera" . I shoot canon and just pulled the trigger on the s5ii for the price and the loads of features for video it packs!
Just the video I needed, As a current user of Panasonic S5 and Panasonic EVA, you're the first review I've watched that's made me think maybe I should wait a bit. I do client work, from documentary to RU-vid/tiktok stuff for clients and find the equipment I have good with everything I do and I really haven't felt limited at all. I do know that this camera or the S5ii X would help me get shots easier and speed up my workflow, but I'm not really willing to drop on $2000 on another camera unless I made an extra amount of money one month or have a job I think would really benefit from it. THANKs as always. I would like to continue to see videos on this as they add more firmware features and such as you see fit. Thanks!
Really loved this review. I initially wanted the S5, but because I am a one man band, I usually like to use a good reliable autofocus, and would prefer to keep my rig as minimal as possible. So I got the FX30 since for me it made sense to get. Seeing this announcement made me have some questioning in my decision, but ultimately I’m happy with the FX30. Maybe I’ll get the Mark II someday as a B cam, use it for handheld cause of the amazing ibis, or just cause of the amazing V-Log profile, but for now I really just hope it pushes other brands foreword like you said. Really just happy with the cameras we do have today and with how the technology just keeps getting better and better for us 😊
as someone who uses the S5 everyday like you said there is no way to justify buying this. but it is a war horn of excitement for whenever i finally kill the S5 and knowing that all my L mount lenses have a phase detect future on their future body (whever that day comes) :)
Great review Patrick, the open gate is a real plus for me, but being with Sony currently, knowing that the S5ii isn't on par/beating the Sony is definitely a downside. But you can't argue that it is such a good camera for the money. Also, I absolutely loved the shots from Japan along with the B-roll.
yeah - im confident lumix can get it on par (or possibly even better) but they need time, this is their first go at it, it just sucks they're so late to the party.
I was seriously looking at the FX30 but for $200 more, the S5II, it's no contest. I compose with the viewfinder more than you might think. Thanks for the review.
I just bought the S5 OG, I feel like I could have waited a bit and bought this new version if I had known it was coming out. Anyway, the lenses I have are 100% manual, so this update is not the most prominent for me, but still bittersweet.
I'm "over" the whole hybrid camera too. That's kinda what got me into Lumix, the fact that they are video centric hybrid cameras. But yeah, they need to just make a competitor to the FX3/FX6.
I have used S5 in Auto mode and, for the last 2 years or so, have had very few misses. 99.99% i get my videos in focus. Video quality is so stunning that i haven't seen anything better than that from anyone using any camera. So what surprised me is your recommendation to use this new iteration for youtube. May be you rate yourube video quality differently to how i see, but if i go by how my S5 performs, this markii should be all one needs to shoot best possible videos for all purposes. And if one can't do it, then it's not the camera. Thanks for your review.
Your reviews are fantastic! Seriously, one of my favorite channels on RU-vid. I’m a long time Panasonic user and considered getting the A7IV like you but this may keep me in Panasonics grasp a little longer. Have you heard of any rumors about an S1H Mark II?
not from the S5 - i didn't shoot much with it there because we couldn't share anything until now and I wanted to share stuff on the fly, so I shot the majority of the trip on my FX30.
I really like the skin tones of Panasonic over other brands. But, I agree with you that I really want to go with cameras that have mainly filmmaking features. I don't need or want hybrid cameras. Which is why I picked up the FX30. That being said, I hope I can pick up the S5iix for its cinema features. Thankfully, I don't have to make that decision now. But, those Panasonic skin tones would really make post grading work a heck of a lot easier. Thanks for another well thought out and intelligent video.
Cheers! Yeah FX30 is a beast. Have you tried Joel’s phantom luts as your beginning point? I find it puts it on par (if not better) than Lumix in a click.
Everybody sleeps on Panasonic full frame. Every wedding videographer I meet either uses canon or sony. I have 3 S5s and on my main camera I use AF and I've had nothing but good results. I am eager to use an S5II and try the AF. Oh and the panasonics from m43 that I've used and now full frame never ever overheat on me. I shoot outdoor events in the summer where it's normal to have outdoor temps between 100 to 110f.
Autofocus on the S5 for photography is amazing, no matter what I threw at it, it has always come through. Even in tough weather like heavy rain and snow. Personally I love my S5 and will be using it until it gives in and stops working.
@@curtw878 unfortunately that seems to be the case. I want to get into videography using drones this year, but for me camera’s are for photography and if I want to record video I will use my iPhone.
@@UHDGamers-re2xj Today's smartphones are fully capable for vlogging, I'm not sure why there's this trend for using DSLR's and Mirrorless photography camera's specifically for video or vlogging.
@@UHDGamers-re2xj Who told you that? Cameras are for what an individual wants to use it for. Iphones suck for video. Put it up against the GH5 II or even the crappy Sony 6400 and the Iphone gets destroyed! Stop it.
The Lumix s5III should consist of everything it currently has plus the no crop 4k slow mo + global shutter + improved auto focus all for about $2300 I'd say? A REACH : Internal ND filter + Full Frame 6k
Glad I found your channel. Needed this no BS straight forward type of review. As much as I love what Panasonic did here, I'm going to have to go with the FX30. This camera just reminds me too much of my previous underrated workhorse, the Samsung NX1 that I beat to death lol. That and I can't fade the amount of lenses available in the sony ecosystem and hopefully, how much their next cameras will improve thanks to this healthy competitive kick in the ass.
Great review, Patrick! Totally agree, I'm so sick of these hybrid bodies too. I'm hoping Panasonic makes a big leap on the next BG series and includes a menu screen and internal NDs!
Also, without a doubt the smartest thing a company could do is to reach out to working professionals *during* the development phase. It helps with the final product. Thanks for being a part of that.
While I don't rely on autofocus, I would love to see a GH6ii with PDAF to pair with my current GH6 so I don't have to buy new lenses with a different mounting system
Uncropped 4K 60p and perhaps 4K 120p will probably be for the S1H II. I hope that camera also has built-in ND filters. If Blackmagic could do it with the Pocket 6K Pro, Panasonic can do it with the S1H II. The S5 IIX might be the way to go for people who really love video because it will support external ProRes RAW and internal ProRes recording. Blackmagic RAW would be a great addition as well.
i mean if you're shooting raw, the AF isn't really a requirement - and in that case you can use the current S5 and shoot BRAW straight away for like $900 USD used.
Stellar review Patrick, I was a fanboy of the GH5 but jumped ship to Canon last year whilst waiting for this camera for the past few years and on paper, the S5ii looks great, just a bit too late for some. I still have my G9 & MFT lens, so I'm hoping they bring the new Phase to their MFT range. (I thought you might have put in a Japanese car in the anamorphic section ;).
GH7 is going to be ridiculous... I agree, bit late from Pannyboi, but I believe some ex-panny users will jump back! Lumix is unbeatable at the price point vs features.
Great work as always... Glad that Panasonic finally made the switch. Will we get to see more of your gorgeous Japan footage here on youtube by any chance? (Doesn't have to be S5 II only ofc)
Please make the comparison video of this against the fx30. I'm on the fence with both. This will be my first real camera. I'm upgrading from the zv1. I need advice. I do diy lawncare and am outside. I vlog in the yard too. Thank you for this review
I would love to hear more about what you like so much about the ergonomics of an fx30 over an S5? Except extra for the mounting hole and the way it looks?
What a great video man. I'm thinking of picking up a A7IV or an S5ii. I'm stuck between the overheating in the Sony, curious if you've ever had that problem with run and gunning. Mainly would use it for photo and light video work. But in very hot or extremely cold climates as I travel alot. Any insight would be greatly appreciated as you have experience with both! Keep up the great work, love your videos.
8:30 Perfect analysis, P. As an existing S5/S1H owner I feel a little let down, but certainly firmware updates for these older cameras are coming that bring a bit of this new tech. But yeah, there seem to be no rewards for loyalty here.
Oh now i know why you went to Japan, it was Panasonic that flew you out and you made those posts on Insta. It was a really cool montage you made with the FX30👌🏾 Im excited to snag a deal with the regular S5 now that the mark 2 released. Edit: I wish I knew this video was uploaded as i expected to be on ur main channel knowing that you made vids prior about the S5 but glad to finally found ur second youtube channel.
Very nice review Patrick! You made me buy the first S5 so its nice to see you again use the S5 in an updated version. May I ask you which filters you were using in the Japan shots? VND moment and Cinebloom 20% maybe? LUT and color grade also top quality. All the best for your future projects!
I’ve started using Scatter for Resolve. It lets you set your diffusion in post rather than being stuck baked in. Thanks for watching! Hope the S5 is treating you well.
As someone who has the S5, this camera is tempting. For me- it's honestly for the full sized HDMI port than the phase detect. BUT, I want to see what the S1H 2 will bring to the table. If S1H II turns out to be a full frame GH6 with phase detect- I will probably buy that camera instead. To add-- it would be nice if Panasonic just gave the S1H II a boxier body for video. I doubt the ppl who bought the original were buying it for photo. So no BS1H mk ii. Just give us a body akin to the FX3 or even the Canon C70.
yeah man lets see this versus the FX30. I believe the real difference will be the low light. Everything else seems on par. However, the cost on the Lumix lenses still tends to be on the pricy side. I picked up a Tamron 70-180 for $1500 which give 105-270 focal length at 2.8. I looked at Lumix lens prices and I could pick up another FX30 for the difference. The Lumix S5ii does look like a great camera though.
Remember that the rolling shutter is also quite bad. Personally I barely use these cameras for anything but tripod RU-vid stuff. I find the FX30 a much better camera overall and the image quality is identical, in fact the Sony is even a little easier to work with in post.
Great Video as always, maybe the S5iiX will have uncrop 60p video with a firmware but I doubt it anyway doing few slow mo. I have 2 S5 and Will be very happy to added a new one with good AF and great IBIS. Btw any new film you will try to emulate in the future ?something interesting coming out in your opinion soon? A bientôt Fil
2:18 - Another HUGE upgrade is the IBIS!!! It is massively better than the S5 and is now closer to Olympus level stabilization! - And LUT support! This feature alone makes this a worthy upgrade over the original S5. The client and director always wants to see the image closer to the final output, so this makes a lot of sense. 7:30 - And another improvement which isn't getting much attention is the improved readout speed. The fact that we are getting Hybrid AF + better IBIS with no penalty in rolling shutter performance over the original S5 is note worthy all for $1999 USD. I'm excited to see what an S1 Mark II or S1H Mark II will be able to do! So if the original S5 had all these improvements, your original S5's rolling shutter performance would have gone to mush and it would have overheated easily. The S5 Mark II is a whole new beast. 8:04 - I agree, I wish the S5 Mark II would have a body similar to the FX30 with more mounting points and no EVF bump (I never use the EVF so it is a waste of space for me). In this case I wouldn't mind if the fan were behind the LCD screen. 8:21 - If you are going to complain about the cropped 4K 60p, then you can't be comparing this to an FX30 because the FX30 also is cropped to 1.62x which is smaller than the S5 Mark II's APS-C crop factor.
A great well nuance review as always! I like that you gave advice for users depending on what camera type they currently own. I appreciate the nuance. When comes to Sony's response to this camera I get the feeling that they've already had that in mind for their next video-centric camera (a7S4/fx4). We've seen hints of it in the a7r5 with that advanced auto focus. Hopefully they'll listen to users who want more video-based features in their cameras going forward.
I came from Sony and went to the S5 because I liked Vlog better. The AF of the S5 made me buy an FX30 but when comparing the S5 and FX30 I actually sent back the FX30 because I like the look of Vlog that much better. Now that the S5II is here I'm glad I stuck with Panasonic and I'll def end up buying it to fill that AF requirement I have for some shoots. I do agree with you that the feel and fit and finish of the FX3 and FX30 have that cinema look and feel. The AF may be better at this time, but I think the other features of the S5II that you named are very significant. As a prior Sony shooter having owned the A7III, A7s III, and FX30 I think I'll be sticking with the Pansonic especially with the release of this camera. I definitely understand if you need a camera with rock solid AF for work and stuff though because that can be non negotiable. Great review.
I love it! I love the S5 II as well. I think if Lumix can improve the AF I’d be more inclined to use it for work. Right now I have to keep using SONY for AF reliability.
No time limits - better evf - better bright flippy - better sensor ( highlights) - better autofocus- full sized hdmi - better joystick - dual uhsII- better burst shooting - better slowmo ( not only under s&q) - more wattage usb loading on the go. I agree it would sounded better as being s5s, but to say it didn't change enough to be a mark II?. what brand does it better on a mark II ? :P
Nice review. I am looking for a video camera for myself and a second body next to my gfx for indoor stuff or run and gun. Its up between the XH2/s and the Lumix S5ii. I loved my 4/3 cameras before. The Lumix is looking really good. Any advice? I kinda want to stick to Fuji colors. But the S5ii is so good in the Specs. And their cinema cameras are also affordable to grow towards.
Hi Patrick , my best compliments for the video , i 'm undecided on which camera to take , the videos i would like to make would be , short films , lumix s5II , Sony A7IV , Sony FX30 , Which one would you recommend considering that i need a reliable autofocus ?Thank you in advance
Happy to see all this ... finally As you say, some will get slightly nervously seeing Lumix stepping up their game End of the year the new S1 Mk II is arriving That's definitely gonna be a killer if you ask me
Awesome video as always my dude. Love the shots. In a bit of a predicament. Recently ordered two S5 cameras for fairly basic podcast, social media work etc for my existing web design clients. Bought these at a bargain price. One camera is unopened and still has time to be returned. Do I return and chuck another £1k at the new one for the better autofocus? I’d keep the opened S5 for second angle, B etc
It’s all about autofocus. If you feel like you won’t need AF then keep the S5’s you have. The only other benefit for podcast stuff would be no recording limit - but you could get around that on the S5 by shooting a baked in profile (standard) in 8 bit.
Footage looks dope! LUMIX always offered excellent features for the price. I’m hoping Sony adds shutter angle and more to the FX3. I agree with you. An “S5 S” and an “S5 X” seem like better names. Of course, that’s coming from a dude that’s seen 3 YT videos 😂😂.
You are complaining about the S5 II only being 4k60 cropped, when your A7IV at a higher price point is not doing an inch better ? Nevermind, that you have no DCI / C4k modes in your Sony cameras, unless you record to an external recorder over HDMI. Really ??
I feel abit too the original S5 owners... They must feel left behind.. But for me the 6k internal.. croppings.. stabilazation and finally good af... Which will get better ! The video quality is outstanding 👍 for me this is my dream cinema video camera.
@@sloppysteaks ok. I'm on a rvlvr clutch handle which means controlling everythibg from the grip basically. But yeah menu system is a bit quirky. Love everything else about it and it has gott3n a lot of firmware recently, now shoots Braw externally, prores HQ in all framerates and separate proxies. Also managed to install timecode in directly from a mixpre3
*Panasonic leaves the chat* - As an S5 user who can't wait to upgrade, I listened to your points but disagree with the small upgrade. There's so much more than JUST AF... Open Gate 6k, improved 10 bit for all modes, full HDMI, unlimited record, fan for super warm climates (F sony), strap clip change... It would have been good to know which firmware you used, as I've watched nearly all the RU-vidrs reviews on this and comparisons to Sony and the Auto Focus is far far better than you describe... Some test clips actually look better on the S5 II than the A74.
ive installed every latest firmware that was sent to us. enjoy the ride on that hype train, im good tho. i think you're seriously wasting your money if you upgrade to this from an S5.
Yes sir , totally agreed I am in the same System like you!! Can you do a comparison with the fx30 please ?? I was thinking to have the S5ii .. what about color science for matching later with sony ?? Bad idea??? Thanks mate
Bought the S5 back in august… but it was a steal tho. Have to pay 2700 dollars for the S5 II here in Norway (no lens), and I got the S5 with the 20-60 kit lens and the 50 mm for 1490 dollars, think thats a steal.
I really want to see FX30 vs S5ii or X, I currently have an a6400 and I want to make the jump to 10 bits because I need it, I was going to buy the FX30 this month but then I see what Panasonic has done, Lumix really catches my attention because it is full frame at such a low price. I work 70% video 30% photos, only for social media and sometimes RU-vid. What would be your opinion from the point of view of someone who has used both cameras?
I belive this is one of the few honest reviews of the new Lumix S5 2, there is people who said that the new Lumix autofocus is better that Canon's and ever comparable to the Sony's. Maybe for a second gen this might be true but not now.
Thanks for the video! Is it possible to force APS-C/Super35 crop mode for video in 24fps - to get extra 1.5x reach - while getting the entire 4K res with full frame lenses, like how you can just set a custom button on some Sony cameras?
