A video on my Japanese ricefish, or Medaka ricefish showing you how I'm growing a colony of these fish in my outdoor pond step by step. These fish are perfect for small ponds, even in cold climates, they do very well.

Last year I started off with 7 platinum Medaka in a heavily planted large half barrel. They survived the Winter snows (Staffordshire) and this year they bred so much that I now have 2 large half barrels of them with no intervention from me other than division of baby fish fry. 🤣

Excuse me, for me to better understand: did you take the baby fish fry out of the barrell pond to prevent adults from eating them? Or you just left them to live, breed, eat and grow?
@jessicasinclair323
@jessicasinclair323 Год назад
I just allowed them to do their thing and because they bred so profusely and I had another planted up wee pond barrel without fish I removed roughly 30 fry from one to the other. But only because I felt they were too crowded. They are now all back together again but in a much larger tub. A freestanding 4ft by 2ft by 2ft tub wuth 2 perspex shelves stood in them with an array of marginal plants and deeper dwelling aquatic plants all indigenous to the UK,which I set up in March. They are now happily breeding away and enjoying their new space. I never feed them. As they live off of the micro fauna and flora in the tub. The only expense in owning these fish is setting up their home properly and buying them in the 1st place. The rest is upto nature. I did find a dragonfly larvae in 1 of the old barrels but considering the fact that I like dragon flies and they're getting scarce I placed in into the new setup. Hopefully it won't devour all my Medaka

@@jessicasinclair323 How often did you feed the adults and the fry?
@jessicasinclair323
@jessicasinclair323 Год назад
@victor I have never fed them. They live on the micro flora and fauna in their heavily planted set up. Which I set up a good 2 to 3 months before I placed the Medaka into their vessel. In the UK you need a vessel that is at least 18 inches deep for any fish to survive outside in Winter

I use floating plants and swap them over when I found the eggs. The eggs also hatch quicker when the temp is 25c higher temp quicker they hatch. I love them and now want to start getting some more rarer colours. Keep up the good work. Love the pond by the way.

Is it ok to mix different rice fish colours together for breeding or should I keep only one colour?

I dont think they are actually classed as tropical fish, but rather cool or cold water fish. At least some people do.

@@mitochondria6264 it’s so sad, those little monsters ruined what could have been a productive first year :( I started with 6 Pearl galaxies and only have 7 this fall, with 4 of the original fish still with me, and 3 of their offspring which are growing so slowly. I did manage to rescue 3 of the Pearl medaka fry (their final batch for this season maybe) and I have them inside. I may have to get more Pearl galaxies to broaden my gene pool because they are all likely from the same spawn. I decided to outcross them and then breed back the best white offspring to bring back vigor. My black medaka on the other hand are hardy and vigorous, I started with 6 and now have 15 or more, and they are growing so much faster. I outcross them with the Pearl galaxy and got some gray colored fish, so I picked the darkest gray fish to breed back. All my grey outcrosses from the orochi and Pearl cross are inside, they grew much faster and they are helping me cycle a 20 gallon long for some wcmm and corydoras.
