ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com...

I started this journey 1 years ago, I still have a long way but I have cleared 95% of my debt. I start putting some money on the side for security I have 1 month cover. In June, I found out my company is making me redundant... it was a shock! I will receive a big payment and I already decided to take some money to clear my debt. I will have enough to secure myself for 1 year. Thank you for inspiring me to change I don't buy just for buying now. My problem still too much foods or the wrong one. I'm reading "The ultra processed people. From Chris van Tulleken." It already changed my way of buying and eating. I'm positive and I'm thinking to start my own business.

I keep myself from impulse buying or buying useless crap by considering the environmental impact. It basically boils down to me questioning myself with - where was it produced? - how often will I use it? - will it just take up space? and my most important question - when will I throw it into the trash? The money aspect is also important to me but considering the impact I have as a consumer on the environment always helps me from buying things I don't need. I don't want to contribute to the endless piles of trash we produce more than I already do.
@dollydaisy7333

The last question is bang on - how will I dispose of this, what will happen to it then? I'm going to start asking myself that question.

I am glad you mentioned a toxic relationship. I was always a saver, even bought a house, but allowed a person into my life. It was like taking in a stray puppy who became a con artist. He spent money to keep up with friends. Ultimately, between his spending and other factors I lost my house and my car. We parted ways, I eventually was able to get another house, and today am proudly debt free. I’m retired now, free to be myself. I since downsized to a senior apartment, and able to follow my dream to be an artist. I do watercolor, requiring limited space and supplies. I am the happiest I have ever been. Your spending pyramid is right on. I still live it. I put 10% into savings, have no desire for impulse buying. I don’t even like going into stores without a specific purpose or peruse to online ads. I don’t call myself a minimalist I think of myself as mindful. Your posts are reassuring and inspiring. I continually look forward to them.

Here's a tip that works for me: I set a goal of completing 3 tasks a day (about 20 min. each) such as do laundry, do some financial planning, fix the clogged tub drain.... Tasks not allowed are purchasing things or researching on the internet. Over time, although my progress was not perfect, I gained confidence that goals will get done with time & it was not tortuous (didnt take all day or all my effort) Gradually more goals became clear & I felt more fully engaged in life & my values. I realized that perhaps spending $ or going on trips was a substitution (like sugary treats are to eating) for being engaged with your life goals.

I know I am a pedantic loser, but I actually keep track of every spending transaction I make using simple accounting software. I think most budgeting software doesn't work because it is too detailed (e.g., one month, you need to spend $300 on clothes, and the next few months, nothing). After I set up my system, I now know where my money is within a few dollars, and it takes me less than five minutes (usually one or two) daily to keep it up to date. Not for everyone, but I really improved my ability to sleep at night!

Something that helps me a lot is thinking about how much I am gaining by not spending unnecessarily to curb the disappointment of not giving into that impulse purchase. I remind myself that things like energy, time spent otherwise shopping, working towards my goals and leaning into experiences that bring me joy , bring me so much more value than an impulse buy would do !

I love what you said about budgets. My husband and I have always struggled with this. My parents were frugal and I learned lots of ways to avoid overspending - I don't wear a lot of makeup, do all the haircutting in our house, skipping the nails, purchasing clothes/books/furniture/etc second hand. I still struggle with overstocking my pantry because items are cheaper in bulk. I have learned to use it, but it's not always joyful. I have learned to stop and appreciate how long I've owned clothing, decor, etc. I congratulate myself on not being into fast fashion. I try to pick my favorite colors and buy clothes only in those colors. We don't eat out much and when I do, I try not to order entrees unless my partner and I can split it because portions are usually too large anyway. My weakest areas are purchasing art or creativity supplies (I'm definitely a creative!) and then questioning why I have them. At present, I'm trying to get rid of old stuff constantly to keep what I own pared down.

I agree that it is often your friends, family or who you date that can set your spending habits. I think the person who helped me learn about financial issues was when I started dating a man who was much wiser about money than myself. Showing me ways to save by taking advantage of benefits at my workplace. He also talked to me about other ways to save on expenses. These were not lectures or critiques about my spending. It was all just in casual conversations over time. After dating for 5 years we married - best decision of my life.

My best tips as a person who has been married for 50 years is to always live under your means, no matter how poor you might be in the beginning. As a retired person I say pay off your mortgage long before you retire, my friends who struggle all have house payments. As a Mom I say teach your kids about smart spending starting when they are small. My girls were given a clothing allowance starting at age ten and when we went to the mall they had an envelope of money for each of them in my purse. They are all super smart shoppers as adults and one daughter is a full time Poshmark seller with a quarter million followers.

The book atomic habits is the Bomb! I’m currently reading it again. Like you I borrowed it from the library and then wanted to read it again and had to wait 3 weeks, a few days later my niece sent it to me saying “ 3 weeks is too long to wait” 😂 we are both ‘book’ people. That fountain is beautiful I can see why you had to have it; I can also see why it was impractical at the time. Thanks for the video I will listen to multiple times…. I agree budgets don’t work for everyone. They are much like diets to me … the second I tell myself I can’t have or do something… it’s seems I do the opposite. For that reason it’s much better to figure out what I need instead. 💕🇨🇦

I'm going back to tracking every cent I spend and adding it up at the end of the week. I find the main culprits are that 'I really need a coffee' purchase that goes from a weekly treat to a daily habit; and the 'I don't feel like that healthy lunch I packed, let's buy something' laziness. I've successfully stopped overspending (or spending at all!) on books and magazines by using my free library membership. Am now looking into getting rid of streaming services by using video and audio resources through the library, but that may be harder as my husband and I use our streaming as our main source of entertainment (ie we don't really go to cinemas, events or out to eat). Wish me luck!

Yes, thank you for posting this. It’s not as simple as just creating an abstract plan for your money. I am a big spreadsheet gal and find making a budget intensely satisfying. It’s all so tidy at the beginning of the month! Then it goes haywire in the middle (I’m still diligently recording every receipt as soon as I get home but all my categories are in the red). Every month!!!! I decided to start with figuring out what was going on with groceries first. And I included a section in my spreadsheet to put what we ate for dinner each night. Come to find that even though I thought I was cooking from scratch, I was actually only cooking twice a month and all the other nights were frozen meals or ordering food. Whoa! So now I’m on a mission to reorganize my work tasks (I’m self employed) so that I’m not so drained at the end of the day… and can actually have the energy to cook.

My best tip to stop overspending: When a holiday like a birthday or Christmas comes around, I usually ask for “needs” first, instead of asking for a gift, I don’t need. Like for this birthday, I asked for new pillows and pillowcases, because our old ones were so worn out. I got the most beautiful ones and am now reminded of the giver and their love for me, every night I lay down to sleep :) In this way, most of our belongings carry the memory of a beloved person, who gifted it to use and we have no “useless gifts” laying around whatsoever.

Mostly my “bad” spending habits have to do with the lure of “mega deals.” Nowadays it’s mostly clearance groceries and thrift store finds. The other one is the “thrill of the hunt.” Also mostly to do with grocery, household and thrifting. I’ve been tracking my spending for a year now but I still can’t really “pre set” some numbers for each category. I think what I don’t like is that it feels like it’s always gonna kill all fun spontaneity. But it really does help me get a good ballpark about where my money really goes. And I find that comforting. Funny also Bcuz it helps me Pat myself more on the back for the things I was doing very well with. The whole beat myself up abt things I wasn’t even doing wrong. Go fig. Lol. I don’t always “shop for sport” but I don’t want to ever have to entirely give up “thrift store hunts.” Lol. For real. Amen on toxic people!!! My best personal tip for me was just either don’t go to places too often like Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Target or Home goods or Walmart. I just don’t go much and so I don’t get tempted near as much. I make a game of it and I also make a game of seeing what I can “make do with” at home and just how long I can go with what I already have or just how creative I can be with that.

I have a contradictory little story. Some months ago I realized I was buying ingredients but never cooked them and they eventually went bad and I had to throw them out. It made me so frustrated I started ordering take out, making sure to always take advantage of any sales and promotions, and finally settling on a restaurant with healthy food at a decent price. I actually made some math and realized that if I ordered food daily for a month, I ended up spending the exact amount I had in my budget for food, but with the guarantee that I would be eating it and not throwing it out. This went on for a couple of months, until I felt able to finally start cooking again at home. I don't live in the US, but I share this in hope it may help someone. Also, thank you Marissa for *not* saying anything about the B-word! ❤ It just doesn't work for me, maybe because I may be neurodivergent, or for other reasons, but it just doesn't.

Curbside pickup! I can select groceries at a convenient time, when I’m not hungry and don’t have kids orbiting, and I am so much less likely to add impulse items. I do this whenever I need anything from Target, too. And it can be done from a computer, for anyone who wants to keep shopping apps off their phone. Also, when I am in a store, I’ve given myself permission to be the annoying person who sets things down on the wrong side of the store (or I tell the cashier I’ve changed my mind). I put impulse buys in the cart where I can see them and often by the time I’m done shopping I’ve talked myself out of it. I’ve read research that shows that we get the most dopamine from “buying” by making the decision and putting it in the cart and by the time we are paying or bringing the item home the feel good boost is already gone.

The best way not to overspend your hard earned money is not to go into the mall just to see what is new in stores. I actually work in one and love spending! So I decided not to use my break, just wandering around and buying things just because they are pretty... after decluttering my home and realising how much money I spend on things nobody needs, really hit me hard. So , now I go for a walk and enjoy a nature when I see something I like and feel tempted to buy - simple ask myself, do I really need it? 99% of the time, the answer is NO 😂

Because our grocery budget was getting out of hand, this past week I used only cash to purchase groceries. So, even when I saw the really good markdown deals, I still had to make choices between those deals and what I really needed. It's working well so far...

Great ideas. Thanks. Our finances are in decent shape, and we've never followed a budget, but we had to give some numbers to a financial planner as part of retirement planning. After scouring visa records, I was shocked to see how much we had spent on our garden in the last year. So even if one doesn't keep a monthly budget, an annual check in may be a good idea.

I know I shop when I need a dopamine boost, which I am working on, because of recent mental health diagnoses. Not that I was constantly impulse buying, but I decided to delete any shopping apps from my phone. That way if I want to look something up or buy it, I have to make the decision to go to my computer and do it. I also love love love thrifting and clothes, the issue is I recognize that I was treating it like a hobby and that's not good. Every time I feel the need/want/desire to buy something new or go thrifting, I am making myself mend or make something I already have. I have a lot of things that just need some tweaks, or full on sewing projects that can take the place of constantly going thrifting. My husband and I have started tracking our spending because I noticed that when it came time to balance the books, there were charges neither of us could remember what they were for! And obviously, that's not good, so we have a notepad on the fridge and we write down how much, where, and what account it needs to come out of. For myself personally, I'll be keeping a more detailed list because ADHD brain. As always, thank you. You are always so kind, calm and reassuring. It is one of the main reasons I come back every week; I don't feel judged and your advice legitimately helps me and my family.

Studies show that the dopamine hit comes from placing an item in the cart, not paying for the purchase so try shopping online and leaving the cart for 48 hours. If you still want it, great, if not, you got your dopamine hit AND saved money!

I loove the pyramid! It really shows you your values! So I am going to ask my husband to do it with me. I think we look at some things differently! The budget and the pyramid can look very different depending on your values and goals. So for me working out is at the bottom as I have an illness so in order to hopefully not end up in a wheelchair it is as important as paying rent and clean and healthy food. But gas & car is not on the bottom as I live where I can move around and live my life without a car. A bicycle and repairs etc is in the bottom instead 😉

For a long time, I thought you were completely alone in the world but now you have mentioned a sister a couple of times. While her story is obviously her own, I wondered if her journey has had similarities to yours with regards to background/outcome, amd if she has any reactive minimalist tendencies as you do, or since she will have a different life and (maybe) spouse, she is differently affected by your family history (thinking how your husband‘s story and mindset also influence you). I enjoy videos like this but also look forward to seeing how you‘re managing that enormous house - it must be so much work to maintain, even though having less undoubtedly helps!

To spend less and safe more, I did the pyramid thing you suggested, and started using the envelope method by using a bank acount that offers something called "pockets" - sub-accounts I can put money in for different purposes like grocery shopping, paying our bills, rent or saving up a monthly amount for the vet (we have four cats). I also checked out pet health insurances to maybe save money for the vet but found them so expensive, that I started saving money on my own to have my own safety net when I need it.

My husband and I moved all savings accounts to an online high yield. I like that it’s not directly connected to our checking account so it takes more effort to get the money. Next, we have the exact amount we need for bills and spending for the month/paycheck sent straight to our checking and track the spending every dollar. The rest of the paycheck is sent directly to our savings. We’ve been able to fully fund our emergency fund this way, pay for a Mediterranean cruise for our anniversary, and are now on our way to saving up for a home renovation, and then our daughters wedding fund. Goals, baby! One small practical tip: I do my grocery shopping at Aldi because it’s so affordable and there really isn’t anything to tempt me there. For everything I can’t get at Aldi, I do a grocery pick up for and reduce risk of impulse spending.

It’s really funny, but something that had helped me lately has been having Caleb Hammer from Financial Audit in my head screaming “But is it a want or a need?” “Do you want to die on the Walmart floor?” It makes me giggle every time but it does actually help me to put things into perspective when I’m not sure if I want it or need it.

I use the Wishlist feature on online stores. I get the endorphins of shopping, but it allows me to take a day or two to get over the rush. I also just leave the item there until I desperately need it, or it goes on a good sale (not a lame sale), or both.

Years ago, when money was burning a hole in my pocket, I allowed myself to buy a single coffee mug. (They were cheaper then, and had their uses. I sometimes even used them all at once.) One day my mother was helping me unpack and came across a box FULL of mugs. Knowing I don't drink coffee, she asked their purpose, then happily carried the whole box off to a friend's summer cottage - where there had never been enough to go around. Today, I'm pretty good at walking out of stores empty-handed.

Best way I’ve found to stop overspending is NOT getting food through a window (drive thru coffee or fast food) or walking into a store for a short period of time as a “test” or experiment. It was fun to see how much I didn’t spend in a 2 week period or month period (online groceries and essentials only) by doing this small behavior change as a “test” first.

I had a list of items ready for prime day to look for. Items I knew I needed to get but didn’t need urgently so I could wait for a sale. It was really hard to stick to the list and I did see a couple of deals that excited me enough to go “off list”. Im surprised how guilty I felt for buying new things because I’ve been decluttering a lot of older stuff that no longer fits my current needs. The new mindset is an adjustment and I’m still trying to find the right balance. I wonder if you feel similarly moving into a new home and having to balance finding a things that work for the new needs.

The last point I feel so much, even with friends who have no intent to get money from me but when they say stuff like "you manage to save money in this economy??" I feel bad for having some left at the end of the month and will end up spending it on them because I can see how little they can afford. I haven't found a good way to handle this yet because I don't want to be stingy and never make anyone happy because that to me would be not actually living life but I also don't want people to get used to me buying stuff for them when they can't do it themselves And most of the time the government is to blame anyway for their tiny income, whether it's social benefits or minimum wage, none of it is something I can change for everyone all on my own, so remembering that helps too although it sucks to look at what people eat (or rather not eat) and how they don't do stuff with friends as much because they can't afford it...

I tend to do the most impulse shopping in grocery stores. I know all the tricks to save money on groceries, but the second I'm feeling stressed or insecure, I over buy on them, due to childhood trauma. My husband and I want to retire early, and groceries and eating out are being cut drastically. Although, Walmart is more expensive than Winco, where I usually shop, I started doing Walmart's grocery pickup for only necessary items. My goal is to use up groceries from my freezer, pantry and garden, and spend less than half of our old grocery budget on groceries. I'm also cutting way back on Amazon, and staying off of youtube channels that make me want to buy something. I don't want to spend money, and I need to declutter more, so I don't need anything!

Thank you for this video. It seems when you become older and you have your own kids and you have older family members. They have expectations that you need to take care of them buy them stuff and so forth, but if we’re all getting affected by this inflation in the state in economy and it’s hard to say no as hard to tell others we cannot help them right now And they tend to you and they have expectations that you need to do for things for them. And the big thing is a lot of families are hurting right now so they kids are moving back home or their elderly parents are struggling financially due to the state of economy and they have this expectation that their kids need to take care of them what’s your thoughts? How do you set those boundaries? What do you say to them?

I've found that while you don't have to budget, you do need to know where your money is being spent in order to change things. Keep a register of expenses. If you don't want to put it on the register, you probably shouldn't be buying it in the first place. If tracking isn't your thing, get a friend who is and make an appointment with them to go over where you've spent things together. It creates accountability.

I spend less by doing a DENY DENY DENY budget. My bills of rent and utilities is first, the essentials like cleaning and cat supplies are next. I haven’t gone out for fast food and restaurants for years. Just last week I spent only 20 bucks on two books, which I saw several months ago on clearance shelf at local bookstore. What kept me from getting them at first sight was my own saying “Maybe later and/or I’ll think about it. Well what I tell myself, helps me to walk through the store and leave without getting “extras”.
