Jimi Hendrix learned to play guitar on a Silvertone series electric guitar by Danelectro - and, it's one of our favorite guitars available because of how evil it sounds...
In this review, we're breaking down the Silvertone 1448 Amp-in-case Guitar, going over the history of the guitar line and the technology behind it. If you are a blues, rock, or Americana musician looking for a piece of gear that reflects your style, THIS IS IT!

I got a 1457 for Christmas in 1964 and have been playing it for the past 57 years. I have a few other vintage guitars, but the Silvertone is my 7 days a week go to instrument. You'll love that 1448 and it will last forever.

Just bought my second one of these. I use one of the guitars for my "travel" guitar as it's feather light and a 19 fret short scale. The one i just picked up has the cord hard wired out of the 1/4" hole in the pick-guard (totally crazy), so will have to research if it came stock that way. But, just like Kyle stated, this little girl is a growling grinder. Way sexy!

That’s quite an awesome piece of history you’ve got there. A buddy scrapped together a custom strat for me out of Squire and old Fender parts, then added a switch that puts the pickups out of phase with each other on demand. I couldn’t live without that thing and now it’s essential to me sounding like me. Awesome video as always!

Cat Power is the reason I got into guitar, and she uses the ol'silvertone in a very different way than raucous blues, its sparkly and mysterious. And yes, I do have one, and yes - the amp does scare the shit out of me.

Man, I've been shopping online for one of these all day coz I'm finally feeling ready to buy one and now came across Circa from Indepreneur doing a review of the 1448 on youtube! Been following your Indie content for years. Love what you bring to the music community... Great review of the 1448. Beck Hansen plays one too. And thanks for introducing me to Flat Duo Jets. I inherited my uncles silvertone 1448 w/ amp case that he got for his birthday out of the sears catalog back when he was a 14 year old kid in the late 60s. I also discovered the silvertone 1449 through the musician, Beck. A combination of my uncle and Beck are the two that peaked my interest in Silvertone. Beck's played silvertone guitars for most of his career and his main guitar is the 1448. Another awesome guitar model by them that I own is the 1423 Jupiter. The built in effects that come with that guitar are amazing, especially for the time period. I feel like Silvertone and Danelectro were way ahead of their time when it came to innovative gear and techniques. Their 1484 Twin Twelve 2x12 amp is awesome too.

Awesome memories. My first electric was this guitar from Sears. Shocked the crap out of myself at a pool party in So Cal barefoot. It wasn't cool I wanted a Fender of course. Sometime around 64?? for Christmas. Wasn't it a Masonite front? Nice job.

I just tried one of these at guitar center, it’s actually not that bad. I think the problem with these guitars and they were just produced to be cheap and sold in sears (when they actually were still in business) and they were most likely bought by people who didn’t understand how to take care of these instruments and usually the neck ends up getting fucked up.

I just happened to pick up a 1457 for $100, I didn't even know what it was! All original except for some idiot's shitty spray paint job all over it,removed the binding and "upgraded" the skate key tuners. No case or amp, but it quickly became my favorite guitar just playing it unplugged, it plays so nice. And once I plugged it in, WOW. So now I've picked up some old skate key tuners and I'm in the process of repainting it red sparkle, wish me luck!

Duane & Gregg Allman both learned on a Silvertone, too. Pretty sure it was also a 1448. Duane is why I play and is the man whose middle name I bear. It's why I bought a modern Silvertone as my first guitar, built by Samick Music Co. I know it's not the same guitar but it's a Silvertone all the same. I didn't have much money. In fact, I had no money. All I had was a couple of gift cards from my grandma that I had been holding onto. So I bought a Silvertone S-style for $140 and taught myself to play. I remember when I bought that, guitar, I told myself that no matter what happened, I would NEVER quit. I won't be one of the people who never touch their guitar again after 3 months. So I made a promise to myself...that no matter what... No matter how long it took for me to learn to play, I would NEVER quit. Didn't matter if it took me 20 yrs to learn 1 song. I wouldn't quit. 3 yrs later, and I've played my guitars every day for the last 28 months straight. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I absolutely love my guitars and that I taught myself to play. There's a long story to go with that but I've typed enough already. You can go through my old comments and figure it out. Playing guitar has been the only reprieve from the death of my only child. It's the only thing that's brought me genuine joy since the day I lost my daughter. No, I won't ever quit. It means far, far too much to me

Gregg & Duane ALLMAN learned to play on a Silvertone, also. That's why I bought a modern Silvertone as my first guitar. Duane Allman is who inspired me to learn to play so when I learned that he learned on one as a kid, I knew I made the right choice. Plus it was the only name I recognized. The others were First Act and some others I don't recall ATM. So I went with Silvertone. Yes I realize this isn't the same guitar that Sears sold back then. It's the Silvertone name and history. My guitar is a modern Strat clone, built sometime between 2010 and 2016 by Samick Music Co, who purchased Silvertone some time ago. They're quality guitars. Mine is absolutely awesome. The only "issue" was the pickups, rated between 4k & 4.5k so not really an issue.

I bought my 1st electric guitar when I was a boy in the mid 1970's. It was a 1957 Silvertone single lipstick pickup. I bought it for 40 bucks from a 2nd hand store named "Graves - New and Used." Right next door to the Sheriffs office in a tiny town of less than 3000 in the Ozark Mountains of Southern Missouri. I still have the neck of that guitar, but I have no idea what happened to the rest of it. The fret wire on the neck is amazingly thick....that was something unique to Silvertone guitars. Great video!

Thanks for this review. Have admired these 1448's for years, but could never find one the owner was willing to part with. My local Guitar Center happened to have the 1448 ($330) on the rack last week when I went in for a capo . They also had the 1449 (or 1457 whatever). The 1448 is like a 3/4 scale with only 19 frets, a beefy feeling neck, and a super light body. Play-ability was remarkably fun on the 1448 and the sound, also quite fun. The 1449, not so much. I probably overpaid (at $330) for the 1448 because it didn't include the case (after I was originally told that it did). Long story there but, because I didn't have the cash in hand and was traveling, so I called my girlfriend to send her in to get the guitar (and case) while I was on the road. I may still go back and squabble with GC about the bait and switch tactic , as they claimed the amp/case only went with the 1449. I caved in (over the phone) simply because I wanted the 1448. No regrets so far though. Thanks again.

My favorite is when Dex RomWEEBer plays his popLAHR guitar with a bit of truhMOLO! Seriously though, Dex is why I have a 1448, too. FYI, your bridge plate is screwed down flat, with the neck-side screw-heads over it. If you put them underneath and let the bridge plate ride on top of them, it lets you adjust the action. I figure your neck is shimmed a lot to make it work because the bridge assembled incorrectly. I bought a 1449 from a guy that told me it needed a neck shim, but I realized that its bridge was assembled like yours. Now I can't help but look at the bridge of all the Danelectros I see. Then again, maybe you just prefer it screwed down?

There are modern reissues of the Silvertone and Danos currently available. Samick was building the Silvertones for a while until around 2017 and I think the Danos are being made. Someone in the US just, became the sole Silvertone distributor, as well. Because they just, started mfg'ing them again.

1447 and 1449 models had 2 pick up and amps with tremelo and a footswitch with a larger 8" Jenson speaker. The 1448 had no tremelo circuit and a 6" Jenson.

@goodun2974 Год назад
The amp in the 1448 is a transformerless, "hot chassis" design, prone to causing electrical shock. You could put a polarized cordon and prevent the chassis from becoming hot as long as the outlet you plug into is wired correctly, but I would recommend using a special isolation transformer between the wall outlet and the power cord of the amp, and then maybe you can add an earthground to the amplifier as well. The hot-chassis amp with a 6" speaker only puts out about one and a half watts compared to 4 or 5 watts from the amplifier design with the 8 inch speaker. Note that even the better amplifier design should probably get a grounded powerecord and the internal "death cap" should be removed for safety.

Ricky of The B-52s had one too, I read it was his first electric guitar that he got when he was 15 so 1968 or 69. He recorded Private Idaho on it for the B-52s album Wild Planet released in 1980, he probably stuck a set of 13s on it. It was tuned to EBDxBB (x - no string.)

If its the original part, the plug wont have a fatter prong and a skinnier prong (positive and negative, I believe). So, if you plug it in the wrong way then touch your guitar while touching something metal... zzzzZAP. Figure out which end is the right way and mark it with tape on the power plug.

I know there's a way to modify the amp so it won't kill you, but I've never worked on one myself. Here's someone's forum post asking the same questions, though: www.tdpri.com/threads/scary-halloween-amp-silvertone-1448-help.520268/ If this thread's not so good, just do some web searches, such as "silvertone 1448 amp shock"
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 Год назад
@@musicmarketing , Generally, the amp-in-case designs that came with the single pickup guitar are the most problematic ones ---- The amplifier doesn't have an actual power transformer and depending which way you happen to plug the non- polarized plug into the wall you have a 50-50 chance of having 120 Volts house current present on the chassis of the amplifier and therefore on the strings of the guitar. These amplifier designs are easily recognized by the oddball tubes they use (such as 35W4 or 35Z5, and 50L6 or 50C5, as well as a single 12AX7 and/or 6AU6 tube). The amp in case units that use a 6V6 output tube will have a power transformer and are generally safer to use, although the so called "death cap" in them can fail and cause shocks just as they do in any large vintage combo or head amplifier like an old Femder or whatever. The transformerless amplifier design can be made safer if you use a special isolation transformer in between it and the wall socket, but they still only put out about a Watt and a half and the performance and tone isn't great. If you're not sure, or you're having any shock problems, consult a service tech.

Jimi's first instrument was a Ukulele, His first guitar was an acoustic. His first electric guitar was a white Supro Ozark, from his father, who purchased it from Myers Music shop in Seattle in 1958. That guitar was stolen. The next guitar was a red silvertone. So, no that is not the guitar he learn to play on.
