There is so much more story to moment 37 than just the parry. Take a look at the japanese player in the green shirt with his arms crossed looking at the screen. Thats Raoh, a Japanese Chun-Li player. He' might not be MOV, Nuki or Rikimaru (arguably the 3 best Chun-Li players to ever play 3rd strike) but he aint a scrub. No one in their right mind would think any American player could beat a japanese player in a Chun mirror, but Justin did that just before the match with Daigo and it wasnt that close. After Justin's pop off Raoh would not even look at Justin and waved his hand off in digust as he walked off the stage. Look after the camera pans back to the screen after the wide crowd shot and you can see the pissed off Raoh, sitting on the floor in a laughing fit. It gets lost in the moment but in 2004 Justin shocked everyone by going as far as he did and in 2005 he did the fucking impossible and got into Grand Finals with participation of the two best Chun-Li players on the planet and hands down the best Yun player at the time in Mester. That does not happen.. you don't get two American players into top 6 when the game was considered DEAD in the US as a tournament game.

like what is really impressive is the fact that back then, there was no real good way to transfer information around, so the fact that Daigo knew the exact situation and parried the whole thing, then did an optimal punish while under the pressure of the crowd and moment actually crazy lol

I watched the whole fight. The entire fight Justin had the upper hand.. But he struggled to close the match out in a couple rounds. He also threw way too many chun li kicks also so that didnt help because every time he did it Daigo had a chance to get the timing down under all the nerves.. If justin had just been a little more confident in himself he would have won. Daigo was just outclassed in that match

Fighting games are where they are now because of that moment. Heck it even made it into the Online version of Third Strike as one of Ken's parry challenges, which is probably why everybody feels like they have have to do the full combo to punish. You're a part of history, and if there was an FGC Hall of Fame you'd be a first ballot member.

Love the look at the lore! I was around and remember when this happened. The B tournaments were important but it went to another level with Evolution. I started in my regional levels back in 2001 and didn't do well but I enjoyed seeing it evolve to what it is now. The Evo 37 moment is a thing, but the best thing about it is how Justin takes it and makes it work. He could be salty about it, but instead he's a sweetheart about it. And that makes him awesome. MAS sticks were the goal to have, most definitely! I remember trying to save money from my college job to get a MAS order going. I never did. They were prohibitively expensive and took forever to get, but they were the best things on the market at that time. You had one or a Green Goblin for Dreamcast. Fun fact: After the Evo 37 moment happened, Justin showed up to a Charlotte, N.C. tournament for MvC2 in 2004. He had a teddy bear backpack and people there were talking mad junk about it, and how he wasn't going to pull up. That was until someone in the crowd who had sense was like "No, it's THE Justin Wong. Like, No. 1 in the world for MvC2 Justin Wong." He proceeded to wash EVERYONE. No more reckless talking that day. People went home crying talking about how they appreciated the privilege of being free for the beating they took. I got washed that day in Alpha 3 but I wasn't talking junk. I knew who I was facing. Continue being the man Justin! We love ya!

This is why the arcade scene will always be heads above the internet driven community these days. You actually had to find out by playing someone face to face. It was easy to watch a video and do what you saw the players doing, but until you actually played that person, you had no clue how good that person actually was. The people who took the time to put footage online(thx preppy especially), actually spent a good amount of time making sure everything ended up coming out correctly. These days any pleb with a pc can stream just like anyone can turn on the cell phone camera and capture anything in real time. The simplicity of everything these days takes from the passion required to be a player 20 years ago imo.

I think one of Justin’s most admirable and endearing qualities is playing into the story years later. It would be so easy for a competitor to be burned by this and carry a chip over the parry for years or even a lifetime. But Justin is still willing to give potentially a complete stranger the opportunity to take a shot at the most iconic party in history in a match.

That joystick flick is actually used for charging motions in some cases. If the stick is messed up or is tight enough in some cases. You can flick it and it will spring forward and you can get fast fireballs for charge characters. It's a very strange thing though and I'm sure it's not useful in many situations. Justin it's not crazy your content appears anywhere. You are probably the goat of the NA FGC. I'm not sure if any other player has had so much success across so many different games.

10:32 yup, that's 100% me. I had dabbled in Alpha 3 and other fighting games casually as a kid playing literally any game I could get my hands on, but seeing Third Strike for the first time and not even knowing exactly how the parry works, the clip itself with the crowd reaction was more or less self explanatory and absolutely transcendental as a moment. I more or less overnight became completely obsessed with fighting games and 3s in particular. Like, I literally imported a Japanese PS2 and the game just so I could play it (absolutely zero chance of finding it in an arcade in Sweden back then). Still by far my favorite fighting game to this day.

I've never been a fighting gal, I suck at those games haha, but the evo moment was truly iconic and I admire Justin for being such a good sport.

Haha anyone remember Triforce on the EC scene as an 09’er? Loved to watch Sanford and Art, as much as I did Gootecks, Mike Ross, Ed Ma, etc.

Would be cool if the "belt" idea came back... The winner of the tour and majors should get the belt and put it up at the next tournament

Brow, I've been following your videos for about a year. I'm from Brazil, and I grew up in the 90s, and the arcade and fighting game culture was very strong. That's why I really like this type of content on RU-vid. It was through a suggested video that I discovered your channel. I'm explaining this, to say that until I saw this video, I had no idea that you were chunli's player in "Daigo Parry"!!!🤣 You explained it well, that at the time there was no easy information, I received the video in 2006, by e0-mail. And the title of the video was: Best Street Fighter player in the world". There was no information about the names of the players.

No matter how you feel about the Daigo parry, is because of that that fighting games as a whole are still alive nowdays, not to mention that a lot of players must have been felt inspired by Daigo and you because of that moment, keep on gamin' and stuff.

@JustinWong Hey man great video, I, along with my friends were in the room when moment 37 happened at Cal Poly Pomona. What a great event and fun day, I had so many fun matches, and met so many cool people. The whole chill casual college campus setting, on the weekend, was great. Better than Vegas imo. You and Diagonal put on quite a show, you were obviously good enough to put the beat the Beast, within a hair of his life, then… the impossible happened 😮 The room exploded, the yelling was so loud that you could literally feel the vibrations throughout the room. It was crazy!!! And the gaming world will NEVER forget. Fighting games are fun, and terribly frustrating, but mostly a good experience. Keep up the good work bro!💪🏽💥🙏🏽👍🏽 🎮 😅🕹️ 🇺🇸

Dude me and my friend Gabe would go to FFA (family fun arcade) in woodland all the time and you were always there. Good times back then. We were 3rd strike players too, but I never understood why he hated you so much. He always blamed it on turtling and cheap wins. But it's a game? Iono man, glad to see you're doing good.
