On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share a critical seed starting tip that will maximize your success growing plants from seed. Seeds do not have 100% germination rates, so to ensure enough plants for each planting location, you must implement a process called overseeding. This is the most important tip for success starting seeds!
When overseeding vegetable garden beds or seed starting trays, you will have too much germination in some locations. You must then implement a process called thinning seedlings. This video will teach you why overseeding crops is so important and how to thin crops when too many germinate in a single location.

I overseeded tomatoes last season in 10 cups. I wound up planting 40 plants. I put the trimmed plants in soil and they rooted nicely.

Temperature? I agree, mass planting is a good habit for space-saving and starting most plants, then pluck and put into individual cells. One can also pluck those extra plants instead of cutting/killing....if desired.

We humans can be pretty emotional creatures, but I remind myself that if I saw an animal munching away on a young plant I would think nothing of it, so why do we concern ourselves so much when it's our doing? You can even eat the snipped cabbages, and they won't go to waste.

With such a tiny amount, I can't really do anything with it. If you're pruning dozens of plants, it may be enough to do something with, but a that handful of leaves is fine for mulch.
