Today's conversation is about one of my favourite topics - compassion. Compassion doesn’t just make us feel good but it can have powerful effects on our health and longevity. That’s something today’s guest has proved to great effect. Dr Julian Abel is a recently retired consultant in palliative (end of life) care and joint leader of the Frome Project, which aimed to end loneliness and improve health in a town in Somerset, by building community connections. In providing compassionate alternatives to medical intervention, Frome saw emergency hospital admissions drop by 30 percent along with improved quality of life scores, health outcomes and costs.
In this conversation Julian shares the evidence behind using compassion as a therapeutic tool, explaining that good social relationships are more powerful than pretty much any other intervention we have, including giving up smoking, drinking, diet, or exercise in helping us live longer. Compassion is far from the soft approach, it is in fact more powerful than many of the medicines we have.
Julian also talks about his own experience as a palliative care doctor and the lessons he learned from people at the end of their lives. He shares many uplifting and empowering stories that will convince even the biggest skeptic that compassion and connection should be at the centre of everything we do - after all, it is what makes us uniquely human.

Great conversation, thanks.I have wondered and tried for years to think of ways to create community and connection.I think community gardens, cafes, parkruns, crafting groups,...there are so many things which could help people connection but it also seems that so often the people who may need it most often feel the most excluded or unwelcome in many places.I thought the government had created a loneliness think tank,I think the MP Jo Cox saw that loneliness and isolation was a big issue in UK

@@DrChatterjeeRangan I don't know if you will see this message or if this is a way you might consideer who you have on your podcasts but I would love to see a Dr of psychology called Lucy Johnstone whose has written some books concerning the diagnostic procedures and categories of psychiatric disorders and how utterly invalid and unhelpful they are.She also has written a book recently called Power,Threat,Meaning framework which is a new proposal for understanding and responding to mental and emotional distress.I would love it if you could interview her as I think this is an area that is so underrepresented in the mainstream and not even on the radar for many people. Please Dr Chatterjee if you could do this I would be very happy, its a message that needs to be spread wider and it all too often ignored and misunderstood in much of society.I think it goes to the heart of what you have been trying to do with your own work in demedicalising many issues that are in fact more social or maybe biopsychosocial as Dr Mate likes to say. Here she is anyway ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tkNWQdVB4F0.html I hope you will consider her,I think she would be a very worthy interviewee.

Brilliant, I now have insight into to my way of being , of working , feeling in my heart the realisation that what I do is enough on one level and how instead of feeling critical of myself I can bring another aspect of myself , of my work up to the level of being enough . Thanks

Nice ideas to help people emotionally. But we need a solid, smart approach otherwise this might only turn people to be clingy and soft. Not everyone has mental and emotional grit but neither should we assume that we should be responsible for their lack.

I'm just not sure how to implement a community building enterprise during Covid-19. It all feels so difficult and lonely. I wholeheartedly agree with all the sentiments of this conversation however, we probably all need compassion now more than ever. Thank you.

Aren’t we either born with compassion or not ? Surely only sociopaths are without compassion ? You would actually have to decide to not be compassionate. 💕
