@jeff thorson The hand carts have a two speed gear box in real life if you did not know that. That came out in the late 70s. And there is a "free" handle mode so the drive handle is not just swinging up and down. The brake is also on the free handle mode to slow or stop.

Technically, it would be a 0-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-4-0 train. The handcars have articulation between them.

You've got good ideas, and I'd like to expand on them a little. The current map is Easy Mode. 😁 Tricky Mode: Desert. Although mostly flat, the resources needed to run trains are a challenge - water towers fill VERY slowly, if at all, depending on location. Firewood is only available in a couple of places, until you can get to a coal mine. Industries are nearly all mines or mine related, with no byproducts that you can use directly to run the railroad. Flash Floods can damage tracks. Some groundwork (crushed stone/gravel) is free, but stonework and bridges are not. Hard mode: Rainforest. Terrain is nearly all mountainous, sloped, or underwater. Tracks and groundwork frequently get destroyed by falling trees and floods, and often need to be cleared of the lush, aggressive vegetation. As you suggested, there are enormous trees you can't cut down. A Telegraph network exists, but is unreliable due to the plant life. Logging operations move around on the map, requiring the rail network to be ready to adapt quickly. Extra: there is a sawmill destroyed by a colossal fallen tree - although it's marked on the map, you don't know its condition until you get there. Evil Mode: Arctic. You need a LOT of fuel (firewood/coal/oil.) Fuel is required to melt ice into water. The cold makes Boilers tricky to bring up to operating temperature and pressure. Ice frequently makes traction impossible and seizes up switches, making them very hard to throw; and again fuel (firewood) is needed to break the switches loose. Storms reduce visibility to zero, and bury everything in snow. Slopes above a certain angle (and there are lots of them) can bring avalanches, wiping out tracks. Crossing rivers is a challenge - moving ice annihilates bridges. And to top off the challenge, there's a monetary cost to *everything*, especially fuel! I love worldbuilding. 😁

It supports controller but you have to set it up in steam but I use a ps4 controller to play bit scetch sometimes but it dose work
