Earth was also rich in wetlands: fens, swamps, bogs. We have drained and destroyed 99% of them. Ireland must restore and preserve these precious habitats of so many plants and animals. Wetlands also sequester a huge amount of CO2, helping to remediate the rapacious over exploitation of our greedy species which has accelerated climate crisis so drastically.
I recommend that you read "Fen, Bog and Swamp" by Annie Proulx. Superbly written brief history of how our destruction of wetlands has accelerated climate change and impoverished biodiversity worldwide.
Four years ago I discovered your work and this video. At the time I was living in a big city and commented under this video that I would do it as soon as possible. It took some times for me to find an excellent owner as I can only rent. 2 years ago I found exactly what I hoped to. So I found a little house and a big garden with a perfect owner who understood the spirit of a natural garden, I show her your work and we are doing it as a collaboration work. The garden has a bamboo area that I just adore. Permaculture is the base, and we are going forward in a little village in the south west of france. Thanks a lot for your video. 💐🌹 !
Just watched again for probably the twentieth time. This is without doubt, my favourite video on You Tube. It's just perfect. It's relaxing, informative, inspiring, it really does have it all. Including the much missed Jack ❤
This is the video I saw 2 years ago that inspired me to get into permaculture and food forests! I finally found it! I'm so grateful for this video and your other videos as well. I can now watch this video every day for continuous inspiration. What an absolutely stunning place you've made for yourself and for nature. Because of your inspiration, i purchased 9 acres of land in the Missouri Ozarks to do this exact same thing! I'll be able to retire and live there in 3 years. I hope I'm as blessed as you in my journey. ❤ Thank you.
Thank God some one cares about the Bee's too! Food for every thing we share a planet... I agree, "plant as though your life depends on it, because it does!" Best quote have heard in a while. Thanks for all your hard work.
plant as your life depons on it doesn't mean plant every thing. Seeds and spores escape captivity and introduces species of plants and animals to diseases and microbiology they have no evolved resistances against. And in the case of unmanaged areas, exacerbate habitat stress. We're dealing with this in south mississippi and along the coast, particularly with asian invasives of ligustrum and mimosa brought in by do-gooder yuppies hundreds of years ago. The damage to the ecological balance wrought by doo-gooder envirotards yelling diversity is getting close to the tipping point of being unrepairable. Nothing these two trees produce are consumed, or utilized, by north american omniores. So basically, they're just taking up space and stealing resources, but their growth habit is such that they just out compete everything around them. And bad as that is, it's not all. The trees are promoting year-round humidity conditions which allow pine-gall rust to thrive unnaturally. Almost every pine I have on my land now has pine-gall rust which was never a problem before until my Native neighbor decided she was going to take a 'hands off' 'natural' management approach about 15-years ago, and all this asian shit blew up. When I walk the line between her unmanged shit and my native stands, all i see is ligustrum seeds. Seed thick as carpet. Nothing eats the berries, not even microbes. They're toxic to most birds and herbivores. They just sit there piling up, year on year on year; And then when the canopy opens and a sliver of light reaches the floor due to a natural or unnatural removal, all you can see is ligustrum and mimosa sprouts. Spouts thicker than grass. It looks like a patch of lush lawn in the middle of a forest. 10,000 of them in 2 or 3 square feet. The few native seeds or nuts which weren't eaten, can't even compete. There's no natural predator for these trees. Nothing eats the seeds, nothing eats the sprouts, nothing eats the saplings, nothing. Fire events which helped control thin-barked species on this continent for thousands of thousands of years, and created a niche for American thick barked trees like pine, hickory, and oaks are non-existent in the present age, actively suppressed by the government, and decried by do-gooder envirotards. The regular fire events would help, if not fully repair our dying native stands. Diversity is not always a force for good.
I agree in the fact there is a responsibility to plant native species and be very careful to know this. Sorry to hear about your difficulty hopefully all who see this will learn and assist in corrections that go wrong in our world and garden's, farm's etc. Thanks for taking time to share. Hopeful out come for you......
You should narrate children’s stories and audiobooks. I’m deeply impressed by your work and your voice is like a priestess of Mother Earth. I come back to this video from time to time like an old comfortable book to take me back to my vision. You’re an inspiration. Funny coincidence I discovered today. My daughter and you share a variation of your second name, Collette.
It's incredible what one person is capable of. What used to be a wet, rushy field is now a goddess permaculture paradise for all creatures lucky enough to come across it. 💚🌳🌿
Wow, thank you! My mother was an avid gardener and passed that passion to me. However, since her passing 8 yrs ago, I lost that passion. I still look at the beautiful collection of hostas that we split from her garden and planted at my farm 9 yrs ago and they bring back memories of our trips to garden centers and gardens...all good memories. She would've loved your gardens. You may just have reignited that passion...i hope so because I miss it :).
To me that looks a paradise. Thank you for your video. Two years ago I’ve started turning a bare land with soil full of rubble into a garden. It’s a lot of work but little by little plants are growing and consolidating.
I moved in to my road 3 years ago. On my first week, whilst hammering out concrete in front garden I was confronted. I was told "No trees are wanted up this Road, we keep it neat" Since then I have planted 4 trees in the front, all edible, surrounded by herbs, veg and wild flowers. I was short of space so I created an archway of a grape vine and tayberry. My back garden is chocka block with wild plants and introduced plants. I am also a compoost fan. In amongst everything I feel that it will take years to restore the harm that has been done to by small rented patch of earth. Thank you for your inspiration.
13yrs pf permaculture is Definitely worth celebrating!! Congratulations!! SOOO AMAZING!! SOO Beautiful!! You're an inspiration!!! You're beautiful and fabulous & wonderful!! Thank you for taking the time to make & share the video!!!
This is the most meaningful video for me on the internet.. Years ago after watching it I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Rescue a piece of land, turn it back into a wild forest. All I had was a big dream. Without knowing where to do this and if i'll ever be able to own land. After such intertwined and unexpected life events I came into a piece of land that is surrounded by farmlands which use industrial techniques. An abandoned land, which was either used for mono crops in the past or was going to be in the future, or even worse, a vacation home to be built on it with grass lawns... Attached to a much bigger land, this property is only 639 sq mt. and I have managed to fit 92 trees and shrubs in it (42 varieties and counting). After only 4 years, it has truly started to have a forest feeling to it. I have more numbers and varieties of birds and bees than any other yard around me. Also just this past summer I was able to spot many new varities of good bugs in the garden for the first time since starting this! Exciting stuff considering i get tractor sprayed of poisonous stuff very close to my land. I havent tilled the soil all these years and i let as much of the local “weeds” flourish as possible. You have changed my life, I host volunteers here from all over the world. I show them this video :) Just amazing stuff.. Thank you forever. We must all understand the importance of birds and the trees.. without trees there wont be any birds and without birds there wont be trees. and without trees there wont be life. local weed/tree varities must be saved as much as possible! this should be top priorty of any garden.
How big were the trees you planted? I only started seriously planting last year and the trees/shrubs I planted are tiny. Since our growing season is short I think it will take me much longer than 4 years to have that same feeling but I'm excited for the small progress.
Truly inspirational! My head is now spinning as to what I can accomplish on my open 1 acre yard space in Central New York! I have many flowers, but this is extra ordinary! As time goes on, these type of plantings all over the world are so important! Thank you for sharing and inspiring!!
Imagine what we could achieve if we all planted something for the birds and bees like this, no matter how large or small our growing spaces are?! Thank you so much for inspiring us and showing us how to love Mother Earth x
Love this video....thank you so much for sharing your garden, it is beautiful in so many ways. No cliche, you truly inspired me with our positive take on the garden, life and earth. I love at the beginning you shared it was task on by yourself because you wanted to show it could be done by one person and your connection to undertstaning you are a part of the chain but not the entire chain....you are a witty woman. So glad I found your channel, I hit subscribe. Much love from across the pond from your new American Irish Fan. Thank you.
This literally makes my heart swell! And tears of joy run down my face! The amount of creatures living along side you. This is my dream for myself one day… and how wonderful if everyone lived this way xxx
You are such an inspiration to me. 🙏 I am in my early 30's. My plan is to continue the 9-5 rat-race for 5more years, save 80% of my income, buy a barrand waste land back home (Nepal) and start my own food forest. I'm currently in England.
Beautiful! I spent 3 months in Ireland meeting Permaculturists. I wish we had met. Lovely, clear, HOME, inviting, healthy, healing for all. Thank you for all you're doing and sharing. Just amazing!!!
I think this is the most beautiful permaculture garden I've seen. You have such a lovely connection with nature and it really shows through. Thanks for sharing this with us.
SINCE FINDING THIS VIDEO IN 2017. .... IT'S MY FAVOURITE VIDEO ON RU-vid! SERIOUSLY SEE IT EVERY TIME I CAN. AND NEED INSPIRATION FOR WHAT I WANT IN MY LIFE. I LOVE BEING IN THE MOMENT AND SILENCE WITH THIS VIDEO.
You have encouraged me to rethink gardening. Thank you. Not only was I educated by this video, but also entertained. Around each turn was a beautiful surprise and quite refreshing. 🐝🐞
I've just watched this. Again. This was the first Bealtaine video I ever watched and I was absolutely floored by it. It has inspired me so much and influenced me to develop and change my approach to the garden and Mother Earth. I now have no interest in controlling the garden. I just want to facilitate Mother Earth to do her thing and flourish. My lawn is about half the size it was and getting smaller. It's Great.
Absolutely! It's so simple and so logical. It just makes sense. Everything has it's place. Once you let Mother Earth take control it all falls into place and everything seems to flourish.
I am so impressed by what you've done. 13 years later and look!! Wow! Astonishing. I could sit here and watch you walk around your acreage all day. It's marvelous 😊 I love your love of nature. Nature is where I feel completely at ease. I run away into the woods in times of need. To de-stress and gather my thoughts. To wonder at the beauty that nature is. Look at the transformation you've created. 1 person. 1 WOMAN! I want to thank you. Mother Earth is thanking you I'm sure. Keep up the good work. You are amazing ❤
This is the garden of my dreams, i cant imagine how much time you invested into it but it looks so pretty, i would spend everyday outside just reading or adoring the plants, that is so perfect
I wish I could comment on your other video. I’m so sorry you have people who are telling you how to live your life and what to do with your abundance. I’m also sorry I don’t always comment on your videos. I would only ever comment positively. I love your videos and have been inspired by you for years! You keep doing you and don’t worry about the nay sayers. It’s very easy for them to tell you what to do when most likely they are not doing those things either.
I very much enjoyed this journey through your magical garden of Eden. this is our earth and we are part of it, no matter where we are. She is our mother. Thank you for sharing your lovely place with me. I feel so much the same as you do about life, the earth, beauty and all around us. Congrats on 13 years of your goddess permaculture garden ❤❤❤
Very beautiful garden. I have been a gardener my whole life and have taught my daughter to plant from the time she could walk. This video tugs at my heartstrings.
This is so lovely, it's like a dream. You have created such a beautiful space for yourself and the wildlife. I have just begun my permaculture garden, your garden is truly an inspiration. Thank you!
This is so beautiful, it is my dream to one day have a garden like this. The amount of work, dedication and love you have put into this ecosystem is staggering. Inspirational!!
How beautiful. Thank you for showing us your work of art which is the Bealtaine Cottage Project. To think that one person accomplished this herself. Truly a remarkable example for all of us. Very best wishes to you and all who take up and follow your sensible advice. Thank you.
Absolutely gorgeous! Wish we had such lovely cool rainy weather here in the states. Yes I know that most people wouldn't say that but it's my favorite weather. I miss going to Ireland to visit my grandparents who lived in Kilkenny. They used to grow rhubarb and it was delicious with ice cream. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden with us.
You have a real life secret garden. It goes on and on. Allowing life to thrive. I move to my very own cottage next month. I feel truly blessed. You have inspired me. Thank you
It looks like a enchanted garden. Somewhere you would see the little people. Someplace that you can go sit and fill the Goddess fill up your soul. I am going to be looking into starts of seeds for different kinds of trees and pray that the Goddess blesses me as she has you. Blessing
I had good luck with a large pile of woodmulch, collect up peach pits, apple seeds keep in fridge till temp drops then cover them in wood mulch leave till spring . usually have 30-40 new trees sprout in spring then I pop them out and put in orchard
“To clean our dirty planet, now theres a noble wish” - greg brown, spring wind. What you have done there is truly noble and amazing. A deed and place that im sure the old gods of ireland would be proud of.
Wow... This is a piece of heaven on earth. There is love everywhere in this place. In every corner. Its evident that you made it with lots of love. Thank you for producing oxygen for us and for contributing to the ecosystem. Wish you all the happiness.
I visited Ireland a few weeks ago for the first time and I fell in love with your country. I visited Killarney and Ring of Kerry which all the greens, trees and the land was so breathtaking beautiful. What you’ve done in 13 years is beautiful and the care you’ve got for your land is noticeable. At my age of 57, you inspire me. Thank you.
What an incredible feat. I am overwhelmed by the beauty of your garden. It is inspiring to know you took it from flat ground to that redolent paradise all on your own. Bravo.
What a magical space! Thank you for sharing your garden and philosophies with us. Congratulations on the abundance of food, beauty and shelter you’ve provided for yourself and the wildlife. 🌱🌱🌱😀
