A burst of solar radiation washing over Mars was recorded by an orbiting radar sounder normally used for imaging the red planet's subsurface.
The event, which occurred on December 30, 2020, was detected by the SHARAD instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter during a research experiment by Christopher Gerekos, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics. In this clip, Gerekos has turned the electromagnetic pulses into sound waves to reveal the 'sound of solar weather'.
