Good to know! I will keep this in mind- btw I also got an important tip about this subject from my dentist, after i began using thc for seziures- The risk of tooth decay excellerates w chronic dry mouth, so she told me to always rinse my mouth out using a little baking soda in water, after smoking/food dosing. Although you will still have cotton mouth, the ratio of undiluted acid eroding away at your tooth enamel will be brought way down.
Hey doc u are literally amazing and so helpful and very detailed, I’m having a deviated septum surgery tmrw at 11 and was so scared about an hour ago and I smoked currently at 7am but the nurse said that I shouldn’t smoke 24 hours before my surgery and I’ll be good but I wanted to see if that was true cuz that’s what’s scaring me more rn then the anesthesia 😅
Never once, have I ever heard this information. I’m in my 50s, & have had a few minor operations, but multiple endoscopies. I do use mj (edible for neurologic pain). Had anyone told me this, I would have listened & stopped weeks in advance. Thank you for giving out this important information.
This is a very interesting topic to me! I'm a medical user, and I love to read and learn more about this plant! Personally, I used to be on 8-9 pills everyday for psychiatric illness and adhd, so this helped me bring that number down to 3 now! (only 2 pills) It's really nice that you talk about the positives and the negatives, people seem to misunderstand cannabis. They hear 'it might be good for you' and start treating it like some magic potion, we should treat ALLLLL medicine with respect :D
I have Restless Leg Syndrome and the only thing that helps me is a few hits of marijuana; sometimes I can go a night or even 2 nights without needing anything. Sometimes I will have an edible for pain and sleep. I don't have the date yet but next month I will be having laminectomy surgery. After watching this very informative video I smoked my last one last night and I will stop with edibles too. I hope that will be sufficient time. I had a TNR over a year ago and I believe I stopped 2 weeks before surgery with smoking and about a week before with edibles. I hope by stopping now I will not put myself at risk. BTW I am 77 years old. Should I still inform the anesthesiologist? I don't what I will do for the RLS! Thank you for your very informative video.
In response to 5:50 "We don't know why" It's something to do with the vagus nerve. Most of cannabis's effects can be traced back to what the vagus nerve mediates, including nausea.
Great video!!! Would you be able to do a video on anesthesia on someone who is on a methadone maintenance program? I need a major orthopedic surgery but I’m scared because I’ve been on methadone for 3 years but am scared to go under anesthesia because of it. Keep up your great work!
Such great information. Read my note above about what happened to my son after telling our anesthesiologist everything. It was horrifying & my son refuses to go to hospital now for any reason & his teeth are messing up cuz of meds & his illness but he refuses dentist too. 😕. Best of luck with your surgery! Hope you find a wonderful anesthesiologist like this guy!
Thank you! That's quite a niche topic, I don't know if I can have a video done in time for your surgery. But anesthesiologists should have no problem managing patients on a methadone maintenance program, as long as they know about your history. I know Melissa had a difficult experience with her son, but in my experience, that is (fortunately) not standard. Thanks again to Melissa for sharing
Years ago before I quite I definitely told them I was a smoker before my neck surgery. And after most pain meds were not helping .. they pre warned me that would happen. I'm talking the first night after surgery while I was in the hospital. It was hard....then I remembered I packed edibles lol I'm glad I don't smoke anymore😂
So great! Thank you! Is this information also applicable for people doing sub anesthetic doses (100-300mg lozenge) of ketamine for ketamine-assisted psychotherapy? Love your videos!!
To be clear, cannabis can only reach a total cannabinoid content of about ~30% but levels much higher then whats actually in the product including medical cannabis are quite often stated much higher than reality.
I have MS and Fibromyalgia. Night time for sleeping is when I wake up in pain from spasticity. The MM makes me spastic, my fibromyalgia takes that as pain. So since vaping cannabis, not the oil, just the flower, and it doesn’t combust. Since doing this, I no longer have needed additional spasticity medications at night.
Yes I'm always up for 3-4 days after surgery. YES I'm certified for most of those modalities. And I'm a naturopathic practitioner trying to heal ourselves isn't that why we all learn. And I hope that we can help others.🎉 Sleep disturbances yes in a 6 hour period I get 45 minutes accumulative of REM
Just canceled my procedure after watching this. It's been 33yrs since I was not under the influence of cannabis. I have spine issues and depression and going a month without before having surgery would be a suicide sentence for me
Sorry. I have had a couple of surgeries and have always had cannabis before going into surgery and have NEVER had any problems. Now all my docs know. I only use cannabis with NOTHING added so I think it varies with each patient.
@@lacybreedlove5604 from my research it seems like a month is the best choice and what I’m about to do. It’ll be nice to have a T break as well I think.
I have a procedure I’m getting done this Friday(It’s Monday 3pm right now) I was thinking about stopping smoking 24 hours before my surgery should I stop sooner than that like now?! Thanks for the knowledge
How does CBD reacted with anesthesia? Is it the same as marijuana because Cbd is none of fork and therefore less THC in fact it’s under 3% in most cases but also comes in a.o percent Thc products pleases advise
Interesting info..thank you. I've been a mj user for over 40 years and became a medical patient back when it was first approved here in my state. I've been through breast cancer and many, many surgeries. Not once was I told by any of my providers this information. I'm always very clear to all that treat me about my usage of various forms of MJ. My last surgery was a knee replacement. I woke up as the pounding of the implant was happening. I couldn't feel it but it has traumatized me for life. Could the use of MJ leading up to the surgery cause this to happen? I did stop it all 3 days prior.
My doctor at hospital told me not to stop taking my medical cannabis because it would cause withdrawls and i am prescribed by a doctor. The hospital seem to shrug it off and say that I just need a higher dose and i will be fine , they want me to stay on it. Come in and have my thyroid surgery done do you think that cannabis is really that bad to have during surgery when it calms the patients?
Really good question! It depends on so many factors that only your anesthesiologist can make that decision. IMO sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks, but it depends on the patient's medical history and other factors. Your best bet is to contact your surgeon and see if you can't find your anesthesiologist that way. And either way tell your anesthesiologist about your habits, be open and honest!
Hi so i broke my ankle Tuesday and im going in monday once the swelling goes down to see if i need surgery (which the doctor said is very likely) and im a regular marijuana smoker and im scared that i dont have enough time detox my body. Any tips?? Thank you doctor
I smoke daily and had the craziest reaction to my anesthesia. I felt like I had hot smoke in my chest and lungs that I started to cough. I tried pulling off my breathing tube and sit up but they grabbed my hands. I woke up crying because I felt like I was suffocating before I went under.
@@ast-og-losta 5 hours before smdh. I smoked flower about 24 percent TCH a few hits from my pipe thinking that I would be good since it’s not that much thc. i’m never going to get anesthesia again unless I quit smoking for a week. I have had anesthesia before and didn’t realize that I wasn’t smoking weed before my doctors all know that I smoked an I would assume that the anesthesiologist knew too . I should have disclosed that with them but I was stressed out and forgot. I have a little bit of brain damage so I forget things a lot .
@@ladyblueamb Really you should detox off weed a month before surgery if you are a daily smoker. I got off for 3 months, started using again just on Mon and Tuesday and stopping in case I get a call on Sunday. There is no predictability when I will be called so I just quit again and I'm using Boswellia and hyularonic acid for pain while waiting.
I would speak to your anesthesiologist and share with them your habits. We always recommend patients to stop smoking marijuana as early as they can before their surgery
But what if you take medical cannabis for 10 years if you stop just like that it will mess up your whole system but in a surgery you need to be relaxed and ready to heal
I'm wishing you the best for your upcoming surgery. We always believe it is best to tell your doctor about your health and habits, especially before surgery
So I smoked today, I’m a regular smoker and have been for like 2 years…I have surgery in 5 days and don’t plan to smoke in those 5 days, but I’m extremely worried rn
Mention all of that to your anesthesiologist so they can provide the safest care for you! Honesty is so important before surgery. I'm wishing the best 🙏
"Hey guys, these cannabinoids help your epilepsy? You need to look at your root cause for your seizures, and make better life decisions - I'm not anti marajuana!- you'd be better off with a petro chemical derived synthesis of CBDn, from a small company like Dow Corning, just wanna make sure you have the facts, I'm Stanford and Harvard trained, btw...."
Cannabis use allowed me to get OFF oral opiates-otherwise I’d be taking a permanent dirt nap. Lost count on # of surgical procedures, only had one “anesthetic situation” that wasn’t positive, very funny, so ok….
