I met pete back in 2014 as a 14 year old - he got my guitar backstage to be signed and let me backstage to meet Brian / let me play his guitar. He was absolutely lovely and I’ve never forgotten it.

Great interview! I witnessed Brian break a string at a Queen/Paul Rogers gig. The whole thing was very slick. Brian was at the end of the “ego ramp”, the first person to react was Roger, who glanced at Spike with a knowing look and between them they collaborated to fill the sound while Brian was equipped with a replacement guitar. For those that know the shows, it was at a crucial moment of “last horizon”. Within seconds he was back in place and the song was completed. Anyway, I was lucky enough to be leaning on the barrier at the front and I saw the bridge on of the broken string drop onto the floor. It stayed there for the rest of the show and at the end I asked one of the stewards to pick it up for me. I still have it!(very geeky I know😂). Pete was there in a flash and by the end of the song the red special was re strung and re tuned and back in the hands of Brian. Also for that show the regular bass player was ill so Neil Murray was drafted to do that one gig, he didn’t miss a note following being drafted in that afternoon! It was in Cardiff, I think in 2008.

had no idea who Justin Hawkins was until seeing the Queen tribute concert. Plan to check out his music soon. Have to say I am so impressed with this interview. Better listening skills than 99% of professional journalists and interviewers I have seen. Just watching him is great, no interruptions, you can see in his eyes and face he is responding to Pete and not formulating his next question before hearing what Pete is saying. No apparent ego of tryin to incorporate his own stories in the interview. Watched this interview because I love Queen yet now want to check out Justin's other interviews.

Brilliant and thank you for some of the cool behind the scenes info there. Like you, I thought Rufus would have been tapped as Taylor's replacement and I'm so glad to hear that you would have pushed him to take the gig. In the back of mind, I had that same thought about Rufus looking too much like Taylor being a possible issue but hadn't really vocalized and then when you said it Justin, the lightbulb went off. Ding Ding. I got to Josh with the Foos in Alabama and he was amazing. What a talented guy !! Speaking of talent, I can't wait to see/hear your interview with Ritchie !

Justin, I haven't laughed this hard in quite awhile ! You & Pete could have been a stand-up comedy act for a side hustle with your wit and timing... thanks as well for such an informative podcastl about all those great musicians. To me, no drummer anywhere to date is as incredibly great as Roger Taylor. He is so amazingly intuitive while constructing his part of every song. In my lifetime I have never been all about the drummer until I first heard him play decades ago. The importance of a phenomenal drummer became more clear when I first heard Rog & to this day he's Impressed me as the best drummer in the world. . I read a book called QUEEN: THE EARLY YEARS by Mark Hodkinson I believe it was, or it may have been QUEEN: AS IT BEGAN by Jacky Gunn, where it said a close acquaintance way back when Roger was a child playing his first drum kit thought "this kid is going to be famous " !!! He was that good. I'm so glad Rufus has the gift as well. Must make Roger very happy, and proud. I also recall my then 10 yr old granddaughter begging Santa Claus for a guitar the first time she saw a video of Brian May that I had on playing It's A Kind of Magic . We also commented on the fortunate length of his fingers as you did. Thanks for an enlightening hour !

This was a good one! Thanks, Justin. Nice to see you from the “professional musician” and “fan” perspective. I too though Ru would end up with FF and recall your post where you alluded to the fact that you did too. Their loss. Ru is amazing! I first saw him perform at a private gig in Australia when he just 12 years in 2003 old and he blew us all away! Not surprised by his current playing and success. And, I will vouch for Pete and his story about Steve Lukather. I was at that aftershow party in Las Vegas. 2004. Drunk is the word! 😂

That was fun! I enjoyed the info on amp and sound setvup, wished there was more May tech details. I guess there is not too much tech stuff to discuss as the sound is the AC, a little chorus, and little delay and great guitar. Since all of May's sound really comes from himself, his talent and long fingers! Thanks for sharing about the Taylor Hawkins tribute shows. I was at the Forum and as a musician i loved the amp line up on the stage and all the drum risers waiting behind stage and in the wings.
