The NBA All-Star Game has been dead for years and lots of people have ideas on how to fix it but how did it get so bad in the first place? It turns out the death of the All-Star game can be traced back to one moment in NBA history.
It can easily be fixed....Just make each player from the losing team pay 250,000$ or more of their own money to the winning team...Like when you lose a bet and pay to the winner. See how the game changes quickly. At least as someone who has worked as a manager and with problem solving, that is what i would do! Winner takes all lets say 500,000$ and loser gets nothing but applauses.
What if they made a winner of all star game have home court advantage in NBA finals. Any star that has hopes for a championship season would play very hard for that reward. All star games would become much more competitive. I could live with "unfairness" of possibly better record team losing home court advantage in the finals if that would make all star games competitive
@TheDwight12 Baseball tried the same thing and ended up going away from it. I think the all-star game should be treated as an exhibition...just not the clown show they've put on the last few years.
Last year Brown, Tatum and Mitchell wanted to compete. But if its just 3 of them there's nothing they can do. If the biggest stars dont show fire everyone else wont. It starts at the top.
It's no coincidence that the All Star game got significantly worse once Kobe retired. He was the last of a dying breed that wanted to win more than anything and he set the tone in the games he played. In his prime there were other fierce competitors like KG, Duncan, Pierce, etc... who were the same way. They all wanted to compete, show respect to the game, and give the fans a chance to enjoy the greatest pick up game ever played Near the end of Kobe's career, the new face of the league became someone who has cared about his personal "brand" more than anything. Lebron was more interested in avoiding anything that could damage his image instead of competing. A brilliant business move, but a depressing trend that he started and everyone followed. If the best player in the league can duck the Saturday contests and not try in the All Star game, then everyone else can as well. Fast forward and you now have an exciting young player like Anthony Edwards saying he sees the whole thing as a "break". The worst part is that these players who are so focused on their own worthless "brand" are simultaneously damaging the much more significant NBA brand that actually puts millions in their bank account. At what point does the NBA experience a financial "correction"? Mark Cuban effectively selling the Mavs as team values hit all time highs tells me that correction might be coming sooner rather than later
@@hunterzolomon1303 An injury risk? Who has gotten injured in the all star game OTHER THAN Kobe? Exactly. And "teams" dont dictate player involvement. Why did Silver have to impose the in-season tournament? EXACTLY. Players were "load managing" their way to easy pay checks rather than PLAYING HARD EVERY NIGHT FOR THE FANS like MJ, Kobe etc. LeBron is an uncompetitive front-runner who foreshadowed the death of the competitive integrity of the NBA with his cowardly "decision" in 2010/2011. KD just mimicked him.
@@feynmanschwingere_mc2270 bro the players do what the teams want. Nowadays the playoffs are so important to players legacies that you are surprised they dont take non playoff or seeding games seriously. For years greg popovich tanked and load managed players while he was mostly praised. You think these teams acrually want their players to get injuref in the all star games and miss the play offs?? Bro its an arms race. When the 3 point line was first introduced nobody cared. Until teaks noticed 3points is better than 2 and everyone startef hitting more 3s so they would not be left behind. The same goes with injuries, health plays a huge part in winning playoffs so teams try to reduce the risk as mucj as possible and they are all trying to outcompete each other in health. The NBA has existed for so long that teans are always looking for the most efficient ways to win, be it by 3points and or by injury free. Thays why the modern playerd reflect that. Even big men are now shooting 3s, and resting players whenever they can to have an advantage. It does not mean i think its better for us (entertainment) just that teams will do what they can to have the best chance of winning. Its just common sense and deductive reasoning. The teams set the culture bro by recruiting and retaining certain types of players. They deem 3s as more important so they recruit morre players that shoot 3s including bigs. As defending is now much harder to do because of no hand check, referreeing and spacing, the importance of 2 way players as the main stars are reducing, ie steph, jokic etc. Its part of why lebron can play so well in his age. Now being able to score 3s or slash to the basket is now more important that mid range thays why u see young players having that in tbeir tool box.
A big reason imo is attitude. Nobody has that killer mindset like mj or Kobe. Back then it used to be about competition and proving your the best and all the trash talking. Now in the era of the superstar it’s about I’m not happy I’m leaving, I’ll go play with my friends on such and such team, I’ll make a super team etc. nobody is competitive or has that instinct. Instead of playing competition they see it as just playing with their friends
thats not what sports is about though. its not about who wins or loses. its about having fun. if you want trash talk and competition go watch mma or something.
The irony about the TV deals is that fewer and fewer people will watch it since streaming has taken over. Even with streaming deals, fewer people will be inclined to watch it over other content. The NBA Cheddar Bob'd themselves
Nonetheless, the content is endless, which will show the viewership numbers for all programs. Seeing the decrease in viewership in a product will also affect the investment of the TV deals for the NBA. Of course, after this current deal haha
they will crack down eventually. but yeah for right now the illegal streams are just too easy. anybody under the age of 30 who doesnt have satellite TV is using illegal streams@@Romanus-
@@godinhumanform9577 it is a rudimentary fact that lack of competition killed the all star game. When two gladiators didn't want to fight, both would be killed for lack of desire. Yeah, lots of things stifle today's NBA and should be reingineered to keep the game alive: all-star game, load management, tanking... Chips do and should matter to be fair
@@TheDwight12how would that work though? If you have Lebron and Curry on the same team and they win, do the Warriors or Lakers get home court advantage?

@@atsk3281Ja might be a moron, but the kid is competitive. Remember those games against the Warriors two seasons ago? He almost single handedly smoked them, they couldn't find a way to guard him, but he got injured and the Warriors ran away with the series.
I have been saying this and I think it's a good idea. Replace the NBA All Star Game with the in season tournament semis and finals. Turn the in season tournament into a double round robin. Still have the festivities you would during the all star game for that weekend. It guarantees you have competitive basketball that weekend.
I’d be down for just delaying the IST finals to the allstar weekend. It’d still be hype during the original IST for a team to prove they are the best in their conference. The only potential issue is that you are basically punishing the 2 teams that play at allstar break. During the regular IST it isn’t as big of a deal because everyone has fresh legs but by allstar people could really use the break. For example if the Sixers qualified for the allstar IST finals, they would be pissed going into the game with all of their players injured and potentially hurting the few players they have left as they are trying to rebuild their team to be ready for Embiid return to play in the playoffs.
In season tournaments and finals sucks no real fans give a crap about that either. The The playoffs need to be revamped the way they used to be and none of this nonsense where the finals are almost somewhere close to July 4th
@@jamesdonoghue7967 But it's better basketball than what we got in the all star game. If anything they'd probably just end the all star game and just have a break during this time.
NBA players getting paid so much is actually killing the sport. They complain about playing 65 games no real D any more, players are spoiled and unreliable to the average person.
Larry Bird fixed the All-Star game in 2016, He said, quote: "Take a 2v2 game and make it 5v5, first team to 20 points every quarter, wins. You'll need to win 3 quarters to win the game. That will make them play defense."
In Australia we have a sport called NRL. We have an equivalent to the all star game in the NBA. It’s called state of origin. The best players from New South Wales vs the best players from Queensland. It is the pinnacle event in our sport. Maybe if the all star game east vs west was actually based on where the players were born it would have more meaning to them? They could represent their home. The only downside is how could you incorporate international players
There's another way to incorporate international players: have one team of all-stars from the US and another with all-stars from the rest of world. I bet they'd play harder to show which group is better.
The SOO does have nothing to do with this NBA trash. Nothing. SOO is competitive for decades. Rugby players are competitors, NBA stars are circus clowns.
But you’d have to teach them all how to play footy! 😉 Na man good idea I reckon, and the international players could be divided up somehow on each team from where they were born on the globe East and West hemisphere or something.
Yep this is what I've been saying, the higher the salary, the more they fear injuries. This is what I suggest, paid all star game starting with huge payout. BUT each time the opponent scores, it deducts from the money they will receive. To balance this, the highest scorer from each team will receive a bonus.
Lmaooo so more money also being an all star is already contract incentive bruh this shit is over it is what it is aint no fixing this unless you take food off their plate to get that hunger back and thats wishful thinking 😂😂😂
For context: the 2020 all star game was good because the players decided to actually try to play in honor of Kobe. The set score to win had nothing to do with the game actually being good.
I think they should replace the ASG with a mid-season tournament that has the same format and rules as the in-season tournament. Make it a week long March Madness style tournament where the winners get the same reward as the in-season tournament. And considering it's around the trade deadline time, it's a good time to measure where teams stand in terms of playoff potential.
They could take a page out of coaching/practice and change the Allstar game into a game of stops and play half court so the players can use more of their energy on the game instead of running up and down fullcourt. Teams only get points for steals, blocks, and defensive rebounds. If you score you switch possession and go on defense. If a team fouls the enemy team plays the next possession on defense (giving them an extra chance to score a stop). Some teams practice this way because it forces players to lock in on the important things like making good passes, taking high percentage shots and playing high level defense. Play to a number tennis style. First to 15 stops, win by 2. Break everyone into teams of 3 and play a single elimination bracket so the players that really don’t care can get eliminated in the first game, guaranteeing a fire semi/finals matchup.
Make it where only the winning team qualifies for the supermax contracts and if you lose while on a supermax or don't play while on a supermax, then you drop down to a normal max.
Option 1: Target mode Each quarter will end if the times runs out or if a team reaches the target score Target score is 25 per quarter or whichever number would be suitable or it can vary for each quarter like q1 target is 30 q2 target is 50 or each quarter can have a target of 25 points so q1 25 q2 50 q3 75 Option 2: 2k Mode Using the LED court the game can have hot spots that move around the court or are changed after every turn of possession. There can be 7 zones to shoot from that would equate to a 3 pointer and every other shot is a two point play, that way the led zones are where the players would shoot from and it would require a lot more passing and movement. Option 3: Point per player: Every player who has possession of the ball gets a point. So if all 5 guys get the ball and then you score you get 5 points so literally each player represents a point value, if you can pass it to all 5 guys it is 5 points 4 guys is 4 points so it is literally scored based on the all stars making it the all star game. So if you drain a 3 from half court that is 1 point. Also passes have to be a wingspan length away so pick and rolls do not count. This is the most complicated idea but would be interesting to see how they would all play. All passes have to be in the front court for the point total to increase
Another very good video following the exceptional Cuban/Mavericks sale entry. Agree the USA vs World would incentivize more competition... But still may not be enough to overcome today's mega-rich player perspective.
I have an idea. How about make the ASG: - Make it into a pickup game. First team to score 40 points per quarter, wins. The winning team must have won 3 out 4 quarters. The lower the point limit, the more defensive the players gonna be since they're not gonna let anyone just chuck up threes or easy layups.
Thanks man. My first NBA game that I saw from the beginning to the end was the 94 All-Star game. You know, Scottie Pippen with pink shoes, Olajuwon and Robinson defend Shaq who scored 1/15 maybe. It was a great match. Now I understand why I did not see maybe the last 10 All-star games. I realized that they are wrong but don't know the backgrounds.
there is a way to save all-star weekend and I was shocked the nba didn't do it, make it the mid-season showcase, culmination of the in-season tournament, make it the gat to no more football season... here is the nba to fill your days!
LOL even in the all star games they use load management. Correct me if Im wrong but there is an additional incentive in salary if the player is voted as an all star right? Why not make it if you lose the all-star game you cant be voted in the next all star?
@a.m.hoops They should move the All Star Game to be played the week before the NBA Finals Start. I know players will play Defense due to the fact that they might be playing someone that took them out the Playoffs
Jaylen Brown THIS season (before his record extension), is earning more than Jordan earned on average on his last Bulls Contract. That Bulls contract required league wide approval as was by itself well over the salary cap. So… an All-Star on a rookie extension was earning equal to what the GOAT was earning on a one off GOAT contract 25 years ago… and in the next five due to being Super Max extension eligible will be earning double his own salary. That is ridiculous.
Yep. The make too much money. Simple as that. This is a bubble that’s going to pop. Guaranteed. Why do you think so many owners are selling. The smarter ones know what’s coming. Nba ratings are awful and the media spends 24/7 talking about Lebron and almost zero time promoting the new stars so the nba is going to take a nose dive in 5-6 years
I dont see how this is a problem, times change. Entry level jobs are higher paid more now than what management positions were paid 25 years ago. Where i'm from, 25 years ago minimum wage was about $5 an hour, now its about $25 an hour. Not justifying the ludicrous amounts they get paid but the scale of pay increase is similar to what every one else is getting
@@glenwilliams2443 Plus, inflation is a thing. I'm curious if they factored that in at all when comparing salaries between two different players decades apart. Also, did they look at it through the lens of percentages, or did they only compare the raw numerical difference in amount between both salaries? I feel like these things are absolutely pertinent when trying to accurately compare salaries with a difference of decades between them. You can't just look at the numbers and go "wow, this number in 2023-24 is bigger than this number from the 1990's" without accounting for inflation and comparing the percentages.
@@glenwilliams2443 I seriously doubt my salary in my role is going to double in the next five years. Likewise Jaylen Brown today vs Jordan 25 years ago isn’t the same position. Jordan was already the GOAT at that point, Jaylen is a fringe all-star. It’s like saying an decent full time employee (Brown) is earning what the CEO (Jordan) was earning 25 years ago.
They used to play for home court advantage in the finals. When they took the incentive away the players quit playing defense because it wasn't worth risking getting injured or injuring somebody else.
The game itself needs some sort of incentive, in my opinion. Home-court advantage in the finals would be a pretty good one. Or perhaps a complimentary pick in the upcoming draft to be randomly awarded to a team on the winning side. Also, most of the events suck and need to change. For example, the Steph-Sabrina 3pt contest was a nice addition. They should scrap the skills challenge and replace it with a 1v1 tournament.
@@anthonythomasWhat is the use of the seedings then if only 1 game will be the basis of a homecourt advantage? I'm surprised people are still watching the ASG because I thought the only time casuals are watching the NBA are during the months of April to June.
How to solve fix the All Star Game in three steps: 1) Increase pay for players that have a positive +/- rating And decrease pay on players that have a negative +/- rating 2) Eliminate the 3 point shot. Make the rules pre ABA 3) Give players protective Gear to prevent injury. Shoulder and arm padding. And a stylized face shield. This may allow them to play tougher.
Maybe if the players will be eligible to get something like 5% extra next year on their contract if they WIN the current all star game. I guess similar with the supermax they get for different achievements.
There are many things that they have to do in my opinion. it's not just one 1. Move the All-star Weekend to the End of the Season (yes, after the playoffs) 2. Divide the players in 4 teams, each one has a captain who chooses 5 players (or 6 maybe...you can add 4 more all-stars). 3. Give some sort of economic incentive. Why? As you know, players get more money if they make the all-star or an All NBA Team...so... instead of giving everybody the same financial upgrade, give them a Ranking value. Let's say: 4 teams 4 minigames of just one quarter The first and second quarters are like semifinals 3rd quarter is for the third position between those 2 teams that lost in the First and Second Quarter 4th quarter is the championship game Players will be able to get a financial upgrade in the next year of their contract depending on how good they made in the All-star More money to those whose team won and less to those whose team ended up last The MVP of the All-Star would be the best paid of the following season You say that money may be the problem...play with it
Idea for the All Star Game: Factor in Players box+/- contributions to the game. The top 3 contributing players on the winning team and the top contributor on the losing team earn the teams they are from a Bye and a Win. Maybe adjust if top contributors are on the same team. Its at the half way point. Later in the season. When the top contributing player's teams go head to head, they have the day off and their teams get a W in the column. They lose out on a scheduled televised deal, lots of arena revenue, and some upset fans looking g forward to a particular game...but make gains in making the all-star game competitive, watchable, more profitable. I'm sure they can move money around elsewhere. That's some incentive that might be worth hard plays one might get injured for...helping your actual team. Sure it's an * on a W but would also stamp who showed out for the rest of the season. Could a team slide into the playoffs with that W*? Sure, but a million other things could have happened in any of the other 81 games that could have changed an outcome as well. Shoulda had a good performing all-star then. Also control the minutes to even out the chances. Change of possession sub-outs of a player runs out of minutes. Either 20min for every player, OR 24min ea for your 5 starters, 18min ea for your top 5 reserves, and 15min ea for the last two reserves. Minutes restrictions would turn it into a whole other chess game for the coaches.
I hope the NBA folds. It's completely ruined the game. Disgusting the already over paid players are saying they will play drfense if they get paid for it.
Wait, if they risk not making money due to being injured in the all star game, why not just make an injury exception rule so that if they get hurt during this one game they don't loose money for games missed? Or is it not games missed that's the problem? Is it potentially loosing out on a big contract due to injury for some reason?
2 v 2 tournament would be amazing - each team sends their two best players in a first to 7 tournament or something, and the motivation would be equal money for the whole winning team - lets say 50-100k each - which would give each star a chip on their shoulder to do it for their young guys and roleplayers for whom it would actually make a difference
I start watching NBA and NFL games one hour after they start. I fast forward through the commercials and just watch the action. So much for watching commercials. I am not alone.
this new deal allows for a lot more on the line for these games, they can give a lot bigger donation to charities and revert to the 2020 win by quarter matchup
The allstar game should give more appealing reward to the winner or to the winner conference so that the player playing in that game would be more thirsty to win so then they will think about the defence again. For example 7th game in the nba finals if proceed to 7th game would be in team home from the winner conference, or more advantage odd in draft to the teams from the winner conference. But that's if they change the format back to conferences matchup tho
👍 💯 I think the way to save the all star game is which ever state there at donate to the charity of the all star MVP's choice or winners team choice or 1v1 2v2 even 3v3 games like street ball
I think the root causes are the crazy high salaries combined with significant incentives to not get hurt combined with impact on legacy. All that matters for their legacy are the number of all-star selections, not the quality of their all-star game performances. Post-season success is just the opposite. All that matters for their legacy is their performance in the playoffs, not the number of times they made it to the playoffs.
I think why the all star game was killed, is the fans are more interested in the other content, like the 3Pt contest, Slam Dunk Contest, Celebrity All Star Game and more like the skills challenge and all that. Those things are keeping the all star weekend alive.
I miss the old all star game ngl they had no defense not only that but the regular season teams barely even have defense scoring almost like 130 points a game. This is actually why I watch college basketball trust me in the highlights there is guarenteed almost 2 defensive plays.
One good thing you can say about the all-star game is that it is a great show for the young (kids) fans. If you are a die hard basketball fan and enjoy the game for it’s technicalities, All-Star game is not the event for that. If you are new to the basketball « lore » and are just getting into the game, I think it’s great. It’s a great family show, not a competitive basketball event for adult fans who wish to see playoffs like performances
I've been saying these players don't want to risk injury to participate in the Dunk Contest. It's the same for the all-star game. They have far too much value riding on the performance of their bodies. It makes absolutely no sense to risk anything for a Dunk Contest or an all-star game.
I don't remember who said it but they said it best..."everything is so soft now because everybody is all buddy buddy going on vacations together and everything else....back in the day we were legit rivals, don't talk to me, no we ain't hugging and ke-ke'ing before tip off neither"
I remember Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV "if you are afraid of getting hurt, don't play sports". At this point, they might as well turn ASW into a fan meet and greet, maybe with casual 3 on 3 pickups. Fans might actually enjoy that more than the shitty ASW we have now
Lower the ticket prices (and put contractual restrictions on the merch prices if it comes to it): 1. Happier fans 2. CBA players' guaranteed share gets lower 3. Players are less overpaid 4. Players start caring again 5. Fans are happier 6. ??? 7. Profit
Casey, here's how you fix the All-Star game. No players are paid any additional bonus money just for being selected as an All-Star. The losing team's players will each pay $1 million (or any other agreed upon amount) out of their REGULAR salaries to the winning team. For example, if the All-Star prize is $1M per player, then the winning team would walk away with a grand total of $12 million dollars (each winning player would receive $1 million a piece). But the money comes from their regular salary. There are no more extra bonuses. It's two teams betting against other with their own money! The NBA has already embraced gambling. So there is no moral conflict. But if their is a rub have the losing team donate the money to the charity of each winning player's choice. Thoughts?
Maybe just keep doing East vs West, but the winner will have home court advantage in the NBA Finals; so the players have something to play for. I saw someone talk about this, i can't remember who, but it seems like a very good idea
when they did the playground picks they should have made the game more and-1 like, I think they should combine the 3 point contest, dunk contest, and the skills contest, within the all-star game, put the contest in the game, that will make the game more competitive not to just win the game but all the players will try win the contest within the game!
