Hi Andy. Nice to have yourself and Charles on the net / group. A BIG well done for venturing out in such terrible weather. A much more relaxed chatty net this year and very much like old CB radio (without all the swearing and death threats). Its great that so many people still enjoy the peoples band. Long live CB. Look after yourself mate and keep the videos coming. 73's Fred.
Hey mate, yeah was a great little evening on the radio, it defo made up for the appauling weather. We must do it more. Well done for acting as temporary chair, it was a good laugh and cool that a few others outside our normal crew popped in to say hello. Just watched your video😁👍🏼 keep up the good work mate. 73 for now.
@@andykirby - Love hearing you guys and watching the video. There is a favorite place I go to set up on ham or whatever at a mountain top south of the city. Its so high there that its possible with 5 watts on VHF to work more than 100 miles north. On CB with 12 to 15 ssb it really goes. I can talk all the way to Detroit or Ontario at night from that mountain. Its a great spot for QRP contesting. My own cheat code for winning the local contest. On VHF when the band is up (temp inversions/tropo ducting/atmosphere reflections) that place is insane. Its was a real jam 20 years go when I would work from that mountain top. One of these days I am going to test out a 1500 watt transmitter I bought on around 100 mhz using a 25mm copper pipe jpole. FYI for the techies out there, the bigger the diameter of the pipe, the broader bandwidth and the more forgiving the antenna is. Also they handle a LOT OF POWER. There is still a jpole I made back in the 90's on top a radio stations tower as a backup antenna soldered up out of 60mm pipe and they drop the power on that antenna because it grossly outperforms the circular arrays they are supposed to use. Has an EIA connector soldered right to the jpole with a coax feed. Good job on this make shift station. Loved watching it. KF
The memories of the CB movement are flooding back, I was a teenager back in 81, it’s great to see that there is still a little activity over the airwaves, I’m in Glasgow and there’s a bit of interest here, sometimes I tune in for an ‘earywigging’ session, one or two of my old buddies are still active…Thanks for the memories Andy..! 😇
Nice one Andy, my cb days were AM from 1978-81 illegal days😂 DTI as it was then(now Ofcom) shut us down, a neighbour complained about me wiping out their TV, anyway they were nice about it and they told me to take up Amateur Radio instead which I did but yes miss them early days, it was fun and made a lot of friends. 7100 is a great radio asI have one myself, next time just put your coax round a 240-43 toroid at the pl259 end, you’ll find that’ll help with the swr. I have several of those ham sticks, they work well. Love your video’s chap keep them coming. 73👍
What a funny Video , I’m also using CBs on the dark side .. 7300/FT-891 , I avoid telling Hams 😂 good luck to you for working in the rain .. your keeping CB alive mate which is appreciated .. there is life out there , people need to press the mic first. All the best mate 🍷
Great video, CB is often dismissed by hams, but the low band characteristics make it great for ground wave, and when the bad is open its world wide. I have so much fun on CB.
It's a great band, a little noisy but like you say, its the best of both worlds, solid local comms with DX available every day at the top of the solar cycle.👍🏼
Lost my virginity to a girl I met on CB Radio. She was a Dancer & FAF. I saw her the other day, proper fat Lard arse now……😂 Her dad hated me…..😅 I don’t think he spoke more than 4 words to Me in 4 years…. He used to listen in, to Me & Her talking on the CB Radio. He bought his own so he could monitor us 2. Mardy arse tw@t
Hey Andy , loving your channel , the CB anniversary is a good one , Me and the Wife enjoy your stuff , watching your episode about the President Randy 3 , I went out and got one , it’s a great radio , you put it across in a way that is mortals can understand lol , now I’m looking at getting my foundation license , so good on you mate , we really enjoy your content, keep it coming, we both look forward to seeing more of your exploits in the radio world , and the world of drones , hey , you can fly a drone , when I put mine up , I’m like a Sunday morning driver lol , thanks for all you do mate , all the best to you and your loved ones . Best Regards Barry and Annie Cheers mate
Was a good day for the Net, skips been going most days on Fm/Lsb/Usb, so plenty to choose & chat/Dx with. Keep the videos coming Andy on the Cb radio, maybe do a video about the great propergation coming in from across the pond. 73's, Ed Mcr. 👋
I remember visiting a guys house back in late 70's. Had a beautiful Yasue HF radio setup. Major $$$ invested. No HAM license, he used it for CB. I remember feeling bad for him only scratching the surface of what that equipment could do. Sure he didn't stay within the 40 channels of CB. A 100 khz above and below the American CB band. Just a fraction of the frequencies available to HAM radio operators. To each their own, but now days with the no-code HAM licenses, just get the license. You haven't lived until you've hung out on 75 meters and listened to the old men talk about their latest illness. ;)
CB radio is SOOOOO much better than the mostly empty 10m Band, to top that there is no need to be a Ham or pass tests to have fun on the 11m Band. CB is made of fun community who knows how to make contacts using the the bare minimum, no one takes himself too seriously there ( unlike you know, lol) Thank you for showing how cool CB radio it might bring some Hams back to having inexpensive fun.
@@vladtepes481that's a contest though, on online SDRs (I have too much qrm at home) there's almost nothing in 10m but then 11m and 20/40m are always booming with activity
@@robertmethia7080 a lot of CB radio users know more than some ham operators, like someone that comes on our local channel thinking a bit of string is good enough for 11m (no one can hear him properly)
"top that there is no need to be a Ham or pass tests to have fun on the 11m Band." I find it interesting that people are worried about obeying the law in the ham band but ignore laws in CB. Well, okay, stay out of the ham bands.
This brings back memories of my CB days back in the eighties, on high ground with my Audioline 341, mag mounted firestick on th car an echo mic(can't remember the brand) and a 25 watt burner, great times. I sometimes consider getting back into CB maybe starting off with the Thunderpole handset that seems to be getting good reviews.
Hey mate, that's great, I think you were on just before I came on, I saw you pop up on Fred's video. Hope to make a QSO one day. I can probably make the trip over to you from my homebase. Usually hang out on 27.305mhz
Subject to where you are in Bucks (and how high your QTH is), you shouldn't have too much trouble reaching the operators in this network.. I would suggest an Antron 99, easy to put up and relatively unintrusive. If you've picked up an old 4 watt 27/81 CB, you may well benefit from a nice little set of boots 😉 Good luck & good DX 73
In the states, ham is mostly dead on VHF/UHF but is still alive and well on the HF bands. In Florida, we do have the SARNet a linked network on UHF where you can usually get someone to talk to. CB here is a circus of people talking over each other with 5KW transmitters though.
"Hamradio is dead, CB Radios becomes a new life." I am reminded of the famous author, Alexander Dumass. This CB radio *IS* a ham radio (Icom 7100, expensive at $1200 in the USA)
"did you MOD the 7100 as well? You're like an RF ninja." Yes, of course. The 7100 will not transmit on 27 MHz. Cutting a diode isn't exactly RF ninja however.
Yes AM is still going and legal on Mid band now in the UK. Trouble is a lot of modern rigs don't sound as good on AM as the older ones do. Grab yourself an old Tristar of Formac and have a listen.@@2m0rot
Good ol UK CB radio land. Here in the states its still mostly Am and ssb. Not much of fm since its legal now to talk fm. But maybe when i receive my icom ic 7300 for Christmas i will jump on there and listen to what's going on.
Nice QSO. I have my 7100 in a Gator Remote/Bugout Kit. Cool you can use a ham radio for cb in the UK. In the states, das ist strictly verbotten 😂😂😂 73 de KI1Y, Cocoa Beach FL.
"just to see what the sad hams had to say lol." I do the same to see what arrogant CB'ers have to say about sad hams! That seems to be about the extent of criticism of hams. There's nothing about CB that is tempting to me. If there was, I'd pop on down for a chat. But that's not what they do, here in the states anyway.
@thomasmaughan4798 thats funny because you just outed yourself as a sad ham, and BTW, I hold an extra class license in the US, so get off your high horse.
@@thomasmaughan4798 - I'm an amateur and I pop down for a chat... Lincoln or HR2510 or Yasue or Icom in hand LOL. Load'em up. I used to work field day 10 meters with my old CB setup in the truck. I even had a sticker on the bumper that said "Worked All Phones and TV's" LOL No one but sad hams care about it. Promise. I worked many years in the RF industry. Did many things. The Feds nor anyone else give two hoots about it. Hey if someone is too self righteous or self important to have fun, then that is on them. 73's WHen in doubt use a bigger amplifier.
Nothing makes radio with a 300 yard range cool. The audio quality is horrific. I'm a former US deputy sheriff. My department used CBs and switched to modified Kenwood TM271s because the range was dramatically increased with 65w output. All agencies in my state switched to digital radio and left 154. All of the agencies in my county (6) use them. They use the abandoned channels used before going digital. It's the chit chat radio. The sound quality is fantastic when you attach a 3 inch corners rounded square extension speaker. Even better than the digital departmental hand held radio, the Motorola XTS.
Andy give the lads in Bolton Greater Manchester area. A shout when ever you can were all sitting on 27.385 lsb. No one uses fm muppets round ere. Due to cockroach and his boy friend.
I know it was an icom. I think a 7000 but I could be mistaken. The yaesu mobile that they have out is a really good choice because you can get a good antenna tuner for it. HF needs good grounds and solid mounts. Mag mounts make for crazy problems. Under 100 watts you are usually OK... Over that and things get weird quick.
I think you find there is nothing illegal about using that radio on that frequency. That band has been regulated. The DTI are long gone and ofcom have no interest.
If you're going to play CB radio then use a CB radio and not some expensive amateur radio.. Come on guys.. An old Stalker 9 and a little amp would have been more appropriate..
I thought my Yasue and the 2kw solid state I have (which I have to run a generator to power) would be great for this purpose. Just look for the aurora and tesla coil sparks around my car. When your toaster elements are rattling to the sound of my voice, you know I got the tuning right LOL
@@Team-fabulous - I know one guy who tuned up his amp and it made sparks and smoke... He thought it blew up. Turns out a mouse got in there and the RF power set him on fire and dried him out LOL. Mouse pee and fur stinks when cooking and burning ha ha ha
Hi Andy. Really happy to have stumbled across your channel. Some really informative videos. I used to have a CB radio in the mid 90s and mate just told me about the BAOFENG UV-5R III Tri-Band which I have just ordered. Can you tell me (sorry, I am such a noob!) if this can be used to listen and broadcast on the CB frequencies? Gonna be binge-watching all your videos. Thanks!
There is a mod that has to be performed on the radio. Either software change or move a surface mount resister from one pad to another in the radio. If you are not a good electronics tech, do not attempt it. You can ruin a radio doing the mod if you botch it. But the mod can be found online. Get someone proficient to do the mod for you. Be careful with that radio after the mod. It will transmit wherever it will tune... and there are bands and places you should not be and can get into a lot of shit. THe FCC or OFCOM are not your problem... Its the military, government, aviation, and public safety who will not put you in the jail... They will put you under the jail and weld the lid shut. Do your homework and due diligence before getting on the air... Good luck. And get your Amateur radio license as well. Its one hell of a hobby. And don't let the sad hams and the do-gooder belly-achers ruin your fun.
This isn't CB radio sorry too say, it's someone using a amateur radio transmitter on the CB radio. and before someone spouts up that's it's all radio. I'm sorry it isn't. CB radio is when someone uses a CB only radio. I know people don't care anymore about the legality of using none type approved radio's like the wild west, these day's. But wasn't this the 42nd birthday of legal CB radio, just saying. So using a ICOM 7100 is firstly not a CB radio and secondly is illegal 😂😮😅 . Just saying 😂😂😂.and I'm a cber.
And this is relevant how exactly? The regulating authorities these days do not care. Those bands are dead space as far as they are concerned. Useless spectrum. If it does not make money or interfere with public safety, they have no interest.
Nice vid Andy. Just a slightly techy note... Magmount antennas rely on capacitive coupling between the base and the car roof. So a thinner protective layer might improve the vswr a bit. Like a poly bag instead of that thicker cloth. Just an idea.
One of the best CB's ever built :) I have a 706M2G in my car 10-4. With the antenna tuner I might add. The antenna is very forgiving and the tuner irons out the bugs. I love working VHF and CB. Like the repeater scene on VHF and UHF but sadly the amount of people to talk to is very much on the decline.
And it’s Not a CB.Some it appears are too Stupid to know the difference. It’s obvious why they don’t know the difference between a CB & an Amateur Radio.
@@KlodFatherICOM has never made a CB and that includes the ICOM 706 MKIIG.It’s an Amateur Radio and Illegal to use on 11 meters anywhere in the world.👎🏻
@@1OFGODSOWN - You are an easy mark to wind up and piss off. ha ha ha Just follow the 11th commandment... THOU SHALT NOT GET CAUGHT. Besides i work HF all the time. I got this great book of call signs at the hamfest so I just pull one out and work for a while... Get a new one the next time. ITs easy to be a ham.
Sounded like a great night! I like your mates coffee strainer looks precarious! 😅 Unfortunately there wasn't much activity Manchester way. I tried calling on 27 heard one station all night and couldnt get back to them. Loads congregating on 19 though.. shame really.
Wow, brings back lots of memories, CB was responsible for getting me married, still got my Tristar 777 and my wife still got her Cobra 148 GTL DX. I may dust em off.
I was an early adopter of CB back before it was legal in the UK. Glad to hear that all the stupid US trucker talk has been consigned to history. "Rubber Duck" "Smokies" and all that cringe American stuff used to put me off. I could never afford a SWR meter so my transmission was probably not optimal, but the airwaves were absolutely packed with people back then.
Here in the U.S. I first got on the CB in the late 80's. I was on for about 5 years then got out of it. Then in 2000 I got back into it for a few years, then again got out of it. Earlier this year I got a brand new Stryker 955. One thing I have noticed is how rude some people are on sideband 36-40 (and even up to "45" shh). don't recall that mess back then. then again i'm no angel but i do try to keep things right on sideband and i dont key up on upper freq's
In the US using a ham radio to transmit on CB radio is illegal. One must use a type accepted radio. Such a radio has limited power and is frequency restricted.
There is always a party pooper quoting rules and crapping on good fun. Unless you are making serious interference to health and safety or services that make money (commercial FM or Phone service) no one, including the govt cares a darn hoot about it. Promise. Let it go. Its over. You can do pretty much what you want as long as you are not pissing in someone elses garden or screwing up the money making parts of the spectrum or bothering the military... Go have fun. Trust me... No one cares.
