Oh great, X-Men '97 decided to dig up that awkward Magneto and Rogue romance again-because nothing says "epic superhero storytelling" like pairing a century-old villain with a much younger woman. Fans of Gambit are obviously thrilled to see their favorite Cajun thrown under the bus for this questionable love triangle. But hey, at least it’s “comic accurate,” right? Creepy? Sure. Necessary? Same thing with their cartoons. Spectacular Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men, and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes were the last ones I can remember that are ACTUALLY good regardless of brand synergy, aside from Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. Every other cartoon was just lazy MCU copycats like Avengers Assemble, Marvel's Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy: The Series, Ultimate Spider-Man, etc. I dont care how many people say that they were childhood cartoons they grew up with and are guilty pleasures. A million years ago I worked in a comic shop and we had a Marvel artist come in. I want to say it was David Cochran but do not quote me on that. He was there as an event but it had zero advertising so no one showed up. But he was there mainly to see our ahop owner who was dying in the hospital. So we had plenty of time to talk. He was assigned to draw a comic about Rouge but she was still pretty new and he wasn't familiar with her. He has some other drawings to reference but the white hair made him think she was way older so he ended up drawing her like a very attractive middle aged woman instead of a teenager. Since we were a comic shop we pulled out the issue he was talking about and sure enough, he drew her mature. I wonder if that whole original story was a result of the writer not really understanding just how young she was supposed to be?

You're right about Marvel hiring writers who don't have prior knowledge of the characters. I remember back during Civil War 2, Captain Marvel called Magneto, who is a canonical Holocaust survivor, "that guy who calls everyone Hitler". When the writer of that line got backlash, he admitted he didn't know that was a part of Magneto's backstory and apologized.

That explains why Marvel just published a facsimile of X-Men 274, another otherwise unremarkable issue. The Rogue/Magneto relationship is very reminiscent of Slade Wilson’s inappropriate relationship with Terra in the early New Teen Titans.

I sent a very strongly worded email to the X-office voicing my disgust over the announcement of this miniseries. I kept it professional, but that wasn't easy. I can't believe they're revisiting this garbage again.
It is super creepy that Marvel keeps trying to push this pairing. And the age difference aside, it just takes away from Rogue as a character every time they have her pine after a genocidal malignant narcissist. She ended up just becoming a tool for writers trying to constantly redeem Magneto, rather than a woman with actual agency in her romantic choices. I suppose I would not have such disgust for the love triangle idea if it was at least better written. From Magneto's angle I could absolutely see him feeling he is "entitled" to her. After all, he's a malignant narcissist. Much like ever cult leader, he feels he is the chosen one in the right and is thus to be forgiven for all his sins and rewarded as the alpha. When Magneto is written well as a villain, and even as an anti-hero, he generally comes off a lot like a cult leader with an overwhelming Messiah Complex. The best villains are the ones who feel they are in the right. And Rogue does fit as a desired pairing for him, not just because of their brief flirtation in the Savage Land, but because of her powers. She absorbs the powers of all other Mutants, including their memories. Symbolically, she can thus be a representation of all mutantkind, of which Magneto seems himself as the metaphorical king and messiah. She is also one of the most faithful followers of Xavier(arguably Magneto's true love.) Thus taking her as a queen, makes sense. But that is, or rather should have been treated as, his one-sided feelings. That said, I could see a way a good writer would have her reciprocate. After all, she absorbs people's memories and emotions and those stay with her in her subconscious. Considering how many mutants she has absorbed over the years who have bought int the cult of Magneto, who do love and revere him, that could have played out as a way for her to be drawn to him, and also make her question her own mind and psyche. Where does she end and where does the amalgamation of alien minds begin? Can she trust any of her feelings? Does she even love Gambit? Or did she just absorb that from Bella? Or maybe it's just his own love for himself she thinks she sucked out of him. A good writers could take us on that psychological rollercoaster and play out a love triangle in an enthralling and heart-wrenching way. Then there's Gambit, the redheaded stepson to so many writers. Because if you want this to really play out as a love triangle, it doesn't work as well when one of those thirds is just constantly beaten down as a character, especially when trying to artificially inflate the virtue of the murderous "redeemed" villain on the other side. The writers who push Rogueneto so hard tend to just hate Gambit and want to cuck him, while they stan for their man Magneto. If you want to do this triangle right, you need to have all three of them rise up as focal characters. And they could have done that, especially at times like the X-men v Avengers or after the death of Xavier. Rogue being so faithful to Charles and his dream fits perfectly beside Cyclops trying to keep that idealized vision alive. While Magneto remains in his camp, pushing the more extremist views of animosity and aggression against humanity. And it would fit well if they became competing figureheads, much as Xavier and Magneto, leading Mutants in two different directions. And that's where Gambit would fit as a third option. What makes him stand out from most X-men, and which most every writer ignores or forgets, is that Gambit was never really beholden to Xavier or his dream. By the time Remy arrived at the school he was already a full formed adult with his own ideology and control of his powers. He never needed to learn from the school or lean on Charles for emotional or psychological guidance or support. He's always been separate from other X-men in that regard, and it seems to be one of the reasons a lot of X-writers, who just have him tag along with no purpose a lot of the time, don't seems to care about or address. Gambit sticks out as sourly underused in general. He's got that swashbuckling hero swagger, a criminal past and contacts, loose morals, and yet a stalwart code of honor. He makes for a great breakaway gray area hero, ala Deadpool or Wolverine, but with more charm and less bloodshed. And while he tends to go at things on his own, often working behind the backs of his teammates, he's also well versed in not only working with an organization, but in actively leading them, as he has been with the Guild since a young age, well before becoming an X-men. This love triangle, written well, should have had him rise up as a third option from the idealist Xavier faction and extremist Magneto faction. He could have been joined by other mutants and heroes who fell through the cracks, not fighting for mutants or humans, but doing what needs doing as they see fit. It would have been a point of contention between not just Gambit and Magneto, as they fight over Rogue, but also between her and Remy, as they come to terms that they do not share the same vision or values. Meanwhile, both of them would have been elevated in importance in the stories to match with Magneto, rather than him being written as the pinnacle being she was made to fawn over, as he cucked the weakling Gambit. Or at least, that's my fanfic version of how this should have played out.

Started reading comics in the late 80s, and stopped in 2008; buying them, that is. After 2010, DC and Marvel just got extremely weird. And, since we're living in the ultra sensitive Twitter era of history, DC and Marvel are selling us the boring fanfiction of some weird writers and artists. Nope! I'm good.

Atleast with joker and Harley their relationship is iconic and while it does make you uncomfortable and is definitely toxic that’s the idea. You’re not supposed to be ok with their relationship. Meanwhile with rogue and magneto they keep tryna push that it’s something that’s healthy and we should be ok with even if theirs manipulation and emotional abuse. Which is why whenever they try this they attempt to change magneto to make it happen which makes it feel forced. Meanwhile joker doesn’t have to change to be with Harley. Also I’m not saying people who like Harley and joker are bad as toxic as it is that relationship is iconic and I can’t really see Harley without the joker no matter how hard they try and push harlivy.

Romantizing toxic relationships is mixed, for exemple many girls reads books in which there's romantization of toxic couples (I don't read It's so cringe, I prefer classic literature lol 🗿) it's still just fantasy, let's just hope that they don't really fall for bad guys. Another example of toxic couple esthetization is : Lana Del Rey's songs (I listen to her music🗿) she said that she doesn't encourage ppl to do like her, she only relates to her past and just romantize it bc it's her experience of life. These two examples are very mainstream but idk why y'all decided to cancel Jarley when there was actually no romantization of it. I love how much you hate this. Honestly when I was your age and they did it for the first time, I think I remember hating it just as much. I honestly cant remember now, because the magnetic field allowing his to touch her was such a cool idea from a writing stand point that I probably eventually forgave it. Joseph helped too.
As a human male comic collector from the 90s myself whom watched the animated series as a kid and had formative nocturnal musings over the Savage land Rogue outfit and story, I feel my perspective is paramount here. I've not watched the show's new episodes. But that Rogue Eric relationship seemed to me to come out of NOWHERE. The 2 had history when he briefly led the team between when Professor X left for space in issue 200 until he lost the New Mutant Douglas Ramsay and had a mental breakdown, when he fled and had not been seen since. Rogue had been abscent for a few months, as she had falled through the sieg perilous while fighting the Master Mold. When she went through, she was the former villainess with arthritic fingers and wacky lightning hair and Miss Marvel baggage. When she came out, she was a somewhat teenage (maybe 18 year old) sexual cut of veale through the eyes of Jim Lee with his cookie cutter female proportions. In other words, the savage land was the story that these 2 characters first met after her rebirth and his crisis of self. he also had some sort of de ageing during this time while fighting Nanny and then a re ageing by Moira McTaggart but I didn't have all those issues... Anyway, yeah, it was hot. Yeah it was sexy. But man I got the wrong wrong WRONG idea on whom Mags and Rogue were when I read that. I had alot of trouble reconciling their characters afterward. When she didn't wanna get with Gambit, it made no sense. I'd seen her give in to Magneto. And when Magneto went crazy on Asteroid M, I didn't understand why he didn't just look up Rogue and let her help him. They slept together in the comics. It was a serious thing for both of them. This series is an artifact of the 90s and the artist centered gravity of the industry at the time. It seemed like the coolest thing ever until we all realized how messed up it really was.
I'd rather see another comic featuring Gambit and Lil' 'Ro than more Rogue/Magneto nonsense. Even their Age of Apocalypse romance kind of makes me wanna vomit.
I think we should all stop thinking Marvel has a single clue on how bad or toxic they write their romantic relationships, especially in X-Men. We just got a lazy bait-and-switch ending to the entire terrible Krakoa era done for the sake of a $10 badly written wedding special issue between two awfully toxic villains.

The nice thing about staying away from modern Marvel is that I don't get worked up about things like this! ... I could get behind a longer story with Rogue in her ripped-up outfit. Ditto with her and Ka-Zar (And Shanna and the kid, if I recall!). But Rogue and Magneto....Nah. Like another commentor said, leave that in the Age of Apocalypse stories, where things are meant to be messed up. (And where it leads to annoying Quicksilver!)

You knew we were going to get a little bit of that because of X-Men 97 was probably already in the pipeline honestly and because people do like row Savage land look they're like okay so we're going to mark it on this with a whole bunch of varian covers and you know there's a group of people who like rogue and Magneto's flirtations together less explore a little bit more of that since people were like oh well rogue and magneto didn't really have much together in those few issues when she was in a Savage land so they're like oh we got a retro fire that we got a wreck on an add more things in there to justify rogue having an attraction to magneto even more than what she did beforehand and to justify her later attraction with what the X-Men Legacy comic book lol
To be honest i don't like this ship between magneto and rogue at all because despite its based on a the comic but i don't feel like I'm convinced or anything else because of it Magento is way older than rogue because he was literally born in the 1800s,a child in 1944 and rogue was only a young adult or young teenager no matter what interpretations you pick and that feels wrong in so many levels and this situation feels like batman x Barbara Gordon all over again because of it

I was buying Tim Seeley's Nightwing when it was coming out with DC Rebirth, and remembered it being "Better than Batman" (the title of Seeley's Nightwing story arc) but Tom King's Batman, the Batman series that was coming out when Tim Seeley wrote Nightwing, was the straw that broke the camels back where I despised Batman, and thankfully going back to the original Batman foundation in 1939 Bill Finger's and Bob Kane's original run, still need to finish it since I only read around 100 issues, helped me like the character again, and JesterBell...ironically, this video helps remind me why I love old Marvel comics because of how you referenced the past meaning continuity matters! That's why I want read from the beginning with the original foundations of characters, and then if I find a jumping off point, can just enjoy future interpretations retaining elements of the character I liked! Thanks in part to helpful motivation through your positive passion, this year, I read Rogue's first appearance in Chris Claremont's Avengers, which I think was all I had remaining so I have her complete foundation characterization. I've read/watched all the original interpretations of Stan Lee's X-Men; Chris Claremont's X-Men; all the original interpretations of Harley Quinn and everyone in the DCAU so Batman Beyond Terry McGuinnis; Bane; Spider-man and basically his entire cast up to 2007; Deadpool; Fantastic Four; Wally West Flash; Superboy; Tim Drake Robin; Elektra; Typhoid Mary; Frank Castle; Reverse Flash Hunter Zolomon; possibly Captain America, Grant Morrison's Batman and X-Men; and Stan Lee's Avengers (didn't complete all the characters original runs; just them as the Avengers). And you just remind me how I still have fandom passion for Spider-man because hearing you talk about Spider-man post-2007 gets me upset, which I don't mind you speaking about since he's one of your favorites and I keep rambling about it and won't stop! Spider-man and Mary Jane, similar to the X-Men, were like friends to me, and my childhood favorite comic X-Men were Wolverine and Rogue. I love hearing you talk about your favorite characters. I sincerely doubt the reverse psychology thing will work on the whole MJ ordeal since its been apparent since one more day that Marvel really hates seeing Peter and MJ together or even seeing Peter enjoy life in general, so hearing fans say "yeah lets see pete suffer" or "yeah I love seeing MJ not be married to pete" would probably strengthen their resolve
The worst part about modern comics (outside of the activism) will always about how the canon has to be changed to be in accordance with the movies & shows
Tim Seeley Nightwing Rebirth was the best Nightwing run in the last 15ish years. That said that is an EXTREME outlier and propped up by how bad most recent Nightwing books have been. He is a mediocre to very bad writer for the most part.

Wow. Rogue is my favourite X-Man. Thank you for letting me know you and a ton of other people have no grasp on the point of that plotline in X-Men '97. It seems the only people obsessed with grooming are the people who want to see that in their media whether it's actually there or not.
I'm under an impression they think we want our fiction to BE the fan fiction we wrote as kids...? It's surreal; past 10 years look like every writer out there came straight off archiveofourown and continued to write actual canon. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this because it's GLARINGLY obvious. It's like they think THAT is what will get primarily women to read comics. Weird.

omg! I havent even seen the video but I was sooo waiting for you to do one on the new Rogue mini...I was even gonna suggest it myself. And yeah, I'm frustrated with Marvel too about this one.
