I know the feeling my friend. I'm a dairy farmer in NZ. I've had my herd for 6yrs now. Last year I lost the queen of my herd. She was such a pet, 1st cow I ever named (Mama G). Crushed my heart. She waited tell after milking. I came down to where she was, sat down with her, she put her head in my lap, that's normal. I use to go out to the paddock, sit next to her, me stroking her as we just chilled in the sun. Only difference was this day she took her last breath as we sat there, waiting for a vet, in the sun. Animals can become a big part lives and teach what we don't want to know

My husbaND introduced me to the 'country' world...some of the realities were severe, but I learned. We raised a baby baDGER ON SPRING, its mother was killed by a car, the local rANGER gave her to us. She slept in our bed for a while, fed her pablum and cream, Billy took her out to the pasture and shot a ground squirrel for her....she became a great hunter...then she learned that under mounds were some of the most fabulous roads all over...underground! She took walks with us and got along with the babies and dogs..in August, she came into heAT AND TOOK A SERIOUS ERSONALITY CHange, growling and snapping ( I could relate). Billy aND OUR GIRLS TOOK HER IN THE DUNE BUGGY Way atop of a hill, where there were new badger holes and released her with a box of our familys hot dogs. I prayed for that beautiful critter...letting her go was so hard. We had thought about bringing her back to the high desert with us but nature gave us the answer. That was one of the deepest and most sacred moments in my life...I am honored to have had this experience. Blessings, Meg Young (BTW, thuis was at our ranch in Northwest Montana)

You had me in tears by the end of that story, Noah, but I am a big softy when it comes to all animals. So sad your first experience went awry when you were so ready to raise Bison. Glad you are doing it again, using the lessons learned from the first time. Your bison are beautiful now and I just love how they follow you around, even if it’s because they think you have food. I am rooting for you and your big adventure now and hoping it all developed the way you desire. You work so hard at it and I really respect you for that!

Noah you can tell you have a lot of love for your Bison. Everything comes with hardship and pain until you learn what went wrong. In my younger years Buffalo was their name only. Then one day in school I was taught that they are really Bison. I did not like the change but back in my day we did not like change. Now in school they do not talk of any history . the next time if you are not sure about this - get a jam jar and lid and sterilise them both and pick up a piece of your herd poop and bring bit in the Vet to get it analyse there and then - and they can advice you there and then as well. That is how the big farmers are doing it here. My back ground is more horse related - first dose is given and their infestation period is 6 weeks so then the horses are dosed and moved to new grass and then given another dose. This is how you stop the bug and the standard is to dose them once a year. Please note that grass that has had the infestation - the eggs die - in the poop.

Those last gasps are called agonal breathing, it’s so heartbreaking to watch. They are usually mentally gone by then, just a reflex of the body, not a true breath. It is very hard to see and don’t let it be the last memory because it wasn’t him anymore. We all make mistakes the only thing is to try and learn from our mistakes and do better. It’s harder when you think that they were your responsibility and failed but you didn’t fail; everyone has to learn some where, he lived a good fruitful happy life and that is all anyone or anything can ask for, love respect and kindness. You did all three!

U did the right thing, but it still Hurts. I am sure u all will think of her forever. It is too bad that most tragedies with so many animals concerning their present health is Not known, it is learned later of their conditions. Wow, this is the first time I've seen your channel. I've never seen a Bison 🦬 up close like this. What a beautiful creature!! I totally understand why our true Natives of this land we now call United States Of America, held these guys in such a high regard! They only killed what the needed and when they needed them. They also prayed before, during and after a slaughter. Then the cowboys moved in and slaughtered the hell out of them to the point of near extention. The cruelty they used not just on the Bison but the Native Indians themselves. I'm truly apologizing for my forefathers and their actions. Thank you so much for caring for and keeping thus amazing breed alive.

I am so sorry for the loss of Billy. I know it was very hard but illness and death are part of life. Losing an animal and having to help them out of this life is hard but having to hold your mother in your arms when she take her last breath is even harder. My mother smoked for 40 years then lung cancer took a hold of her. She lived 5 months and 22 days. I wish that was not my last memory of my mother but I don’t think anyone should die alone. Just DO NOT ever smoke and put your family through that. My 74 yr. Old sister-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer on April 3rd with Stage 4 lung cancer. She had probably smoked for 50 years and had already had open heart surgery. We all sat with her and cried on April 21st, 2024 as she took her last breaths. It was HORRIBLE to witness an unnecessary death like that. I and my husband, her older brother, are both 76 and have never smoked. Death is just hard. It is difficult for me to believe that anyone could kill an unborn baby or murder someone for all of the reasons you hear about someone killing another person. But, an animal in terrible pain…that is a whole mother story. Sorry you had to experience that…but you really had no choice with Billy. You did good. You are young yet. Get ready for more of it.

Thank you for sharing your heartbreaking experience, & the knowledge you gained. Now others who are responsible for the care of animals can learn a valuable life lesson; thereby avoiding the same consequences both you & Billy went through. Lessons not only about animals' preventative care & welfare, but also that your competition is not your enemy. We can gain much wisdom, when we acknowledge our inexperience, ask for help; & rely on them to share their school of hard-knocks wisdom. * BTW I've noticed that on several farmer & livestock YT Channels, one of the first orist devastating loss they have is because animals bought at auctions have parasites. Maybe from the seller, but most definitely picked up in the soil at the auction site. I think it might be a good idea to quarantine all newly obtained animals from anyplace, & treat for parasites. Afterward give them access to their farm areas; & treat the quarantine area. Whatever our endeavor, 'we're all in this together' can be a good thing. Billy's loss will save many lives. 💞🙏🏼🤗

Anyone and everyone that raises livestock during sometime will miss something or make a mistake that's called being human. There is only a problem when you don't learn from it. I have made my own mistakes and yep they do stick with you BUT......I only made those mistakes ONCE. My heart goes out to you. May God bless you and yours and heal your heart.

Poignant. The problem with the school of hard knocks (and life) is that you get the test first and the lesson comes after. You never graduate from the school of hard knocks and it never gets any easier. I wish you the best as you go forward. Merry Christmas and a Happy and hopefully an easier New Year.

This is about a beef cow. I raised it from a calf. The cow would take an ear of corn out of my hand. As you that it easy to move them. She was 16yrs, her rear hips went out. I had to put her down. That is tough.

Noah thank you for sharing such a bad time in your life with your bison. That had to be so hard on you to shoot poor Billy. We had to put cows down when they were suffering. Not easy to do. I sat and cried listening to your story. Made me think of a couple family members who I was with and heard them take last couple breaths. It just made me sit and cry. So thanks for sharing Red Prairie ul close and you touching her nose. I thought it was her then you said it. I am learning. Tell Wolf to quit taunting Strong Wind she may get him one day. Silly dog. Take care.

This story is heart breaking. I can hardly listen to it. Can't believe the strength you had to do what you had to do. These are wild animals, who can no longer be wild, sadly. So sad. Thousands of years they were wild. Humans changed their world to the point they cannot be in the wild.

It’s crazy how resilient these animals are yet also so fragile to disease. Pretty wild since that is probably how it was for us until we learned about germs and things

Noah these majestic creatures are not your pets but in essence a business partner. You would never want anything to happen to that relationship so it is the same with your Bison herd. That had to be gut wrenching moment but your lack of knowledge led to Billy getting into a situation that was not recoverable Akin to a marriage relationship on some level. But your compassion guided you to do the right thing.

Any normal person will feel horrible when you've basically failed your animal. But we all will at some point due to a lack of experience. Because experience is the thing that you gain after you needed it.

I appreciate you having the courage to say 'kill'. Those of us who are pet owners say 'put down'. It is the same. Both are what is needed for the animal, in our opinion. But this makes the pain for you and the rest of us more real.

Raising any large animal is a learning curve. Be it cattle or buffalo. But one thing, if you don’t already do it, is get that metal wedding ring off your finger when actually working the herd. My ex as a large animal vet & metal rings can get caught in the working pens. Many fingers have been lost as a result. If you want to wear a ring while working any large wild animal get a rubber ring to wear just for those times.
