Hi Chioma, I’ve just discovered/found your channel while waiting for the rain to stop so I could go home from work. I am working as a Residential Youth Worker here in Queensland, focusing with high risk YP’s. I’d been in the industry for quite a long time and have seen many CSO’s (Child Safety Officer) quit due to burnout and excessive work loads. I totally agree with you in every aspect. I have recently experienced compassion fatigue and burnout myself but the little wins in the moment keeps the fire burning. Some of the littlest random things that our YP’s (young person) do makes our job worth while and we’re like “yeah, this is why we’re here” 😅

Thank you. Those seemingly little wins are actually the big win. Keep looking after yourself. Glad you stopped by.

You nailed it. As a Nigeria medical social worker, i got so depressed recently just because of clients issues even though i thought i was resilient 😅.

I have been working with a couple social workers, and a few other individuals who come from other helping professions (first responders) to create toolkits and other forms of educational and informal learning with a high focus on prevention, however... we have all learned through our careers with people and working with others that it's only going to work if people start believing they truly need support with building a self-care plan, knowing what resources are available if they are starting to feel overwhelmed or even seeing a therapist themselves right from the very start of their career. I have taught in colleges where students just didn't believe that issues such as burnout and secondary trauma could happen to them - they didn't care, and I see this attitude perpetuated time after time in so many professions. It's not the systems that need to change - it's us that needs to change, so I'm glad that you are one of those people who will teach the truth and hope that others learn to do better for themselves and for the people they serve. Thank you for what you do and I'll be having more content related to the resources we are creating in Mid-June or so. Much light, love and good vibes!

Yes, I had a brilliant risk assessment from uni which very accurately predicted outcomes and was published in the early 1990s, and I have been searching for a copy for years. People reinvented the process so many times it lost its usefulness. If i have a complaint about social workers and psychologists it is that every new crop of graduates reinvents everything without a good understanding of history and the reasons past choices were made. We used to give much higher levels of close support than they do today, and I believe it ensured that women escaped sooner and were less scarred.

i ma a teacher now but my first discipline was psychology and i ran a legal service with a large proportion of domestic violence matters. I always remember that when i was studying psychology we were taught a technique which was : when you lock up or leave at night, to visualise that you are locking all your clients in for the night, then in the morning, they come to greet you when you open the office. It doesn't sound like much but it has the effect of feeling like they are safe, there's food in the fridge, there's coffee in the pot etc etc , so it sort of provides a buffer and your brain will process what happened overnight, as having happened on that day when you hear about it. I recommend that technique frequently, it helps.

You have no idea how much I look forward to your videos especially the ones related to practice lol. In 2022 right on this Chanel, I learnt what vicarious trauma was about even before I started studying SW. I remember one experience you spoke about, and I told myself I’m not working in DV whenever I start practicing 😂……Thanks for always taking out time to do this🤗

As a Social worker, I completely agree. The burn out is crazy🥵, let’s not even talk about how it affects YOUR OWN mental health. Na God go help us oo😩😩

This was very interesting and fresh reality of the job.I think as immigrants we have extra adjust to do accepting the other country ways, their policies etc. I think anyone in these kind of professions starting new should always have aquinted themselves in the first days of working for a company or institution and abide to their ways. I was in rge teaching profession and I hear of horrible stories how learners are abusing the teachers and still remain in the profession. I think if anyone will just 'suck it up' for too long and are becoming unhappy too long it will affect the quality of work you produce as well. So I think 5 years in this job should be enough as a social worker at a particular place of employment and move on and start fresh perhaps again as a social worker but a different role and Clent.

This is great, actually its quite challenging being a social worker in a developed environment. Here, people hardly notice anybody called a social worker and I know if their services where noticed or encouraged many social issues we have here would have being avoided. 👍

You are absolutely right about the status of social work back home. As you said, there's so much benefit to developing a robust social welfare system in Nigeria but, I guess we can only hope that one day we get it right. Thanks for stopping by my brother.

@julin8597 0 seconds ago I really enjoy the way you speak and express your thoughts. How you find the perfect words and phrasing to relay a very complex and layered topic 🙏🏿 I work In mental Health and I am getting worn down seeing people in distress everyday. It really gets to me. My healthy barriers have crumbled. Work politics contributed! I wanted to do social work but mentally I am already burnt out. But I will think about it. Thank you for the video

@chiomarthur. Please note that I do not follow immigration updates anymore so my knowledge might be a bit rusty (if your enquiry is immigration related). Not sure about study loans. Maybe look at scholarships - not an area of expertise for me, by the way.
