I am glad that you found some support through university staff. I so relate to the part about 2 years feeling like 10. Thank goodness it ended well.

An international MSW student in the U.S. here, I really appreciate you making this video. I feel so seen! And I am very sorry you had to experiencing the manifestation of extreme stress your body was going through! International students have challenges that are so unique to our international student/non-citizen status and these things are not really recognized by faculties and honestly pretty much people other than those who are in the international office. I mean all the financial anxiety and worry about maintaining immigrant status during and after the program are so real international students' mental health needs should be addressed on campus! As I am in the MSW program, working at International office as my on-campus job, I have been working on a project for better support international students' mental health, collaborating with therapists on campus (all are POC:) including peer support group! It is so important to take care of ourselves but doing it as a collective activity and correlating with those who shares identity as international students would be really helpful I think!

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. It is quite telling that international students have very similar experiences everywhere and their struggles often go unnoticed. Your work in the international office sounds fulfilling. Thank you for making a difference

As someone who has worked at schools that recruited international students as well as domestic students, your story would resonate with a lot of the students I've taught. Unfortunately, I think it needs to be a larger issue than just bringing in peer support programs and on campus mental health support - Those are going to be only as good as the faculty and the level of care they have for their students, and it needs to go higher than the instructors and professors - the administration need to care and I'm going to be very honest with you - Most of these individuals, even being immigrants themselves which is crazy to me, do not care past getting the tuition from the students. There is so much corruption going on, and I have stories upon stories that I could share about this happening in Canada and maybe one day I will but all I can say is that I am glad that the two of you are a part of those who are lucky to survive, and I wish you all the success in your career and in your life. No one deserves to have some of the hardship that you and others have endured because of a system based on caring about the monetary.

Honestly chioma this video came just at the right time. Like you already know I’m an international student in Queensland and the trimester we operate in is so fast paced and having to work and study to pay your tuition got my mental health all riled up. It’s not easy. School work became so choked up as well having to managed all is not easy. What I do to unwind sometime is to watch movies when I’m not working, there are so many things ordinarily I would like to do outdoor but just to cut down on spendings I tend not to go out to places where I will swipe my cards often, atleast not yet. There are days when i ask myself if all this struggles is worth then I remember that there are people that have gone through it and remind myself what my goals are and how well this education will set me up for it in a few years. In all I also try to speak with family back home and find some sense of happiness because at the end of the day it’s my sole duty to take care of my self here and not break down

Be encouraged! You will pull through too. I like your approach of slowing down sometimes and just watching movies and speaking to family. Well done!

As an international student myself, this came at the right time for me. The anxiety and pressure to do well has been getting to me lately. This was a very validating, important reminder. I know I should be doing more to keep myself well, but it's hard because I feel like I'll be invalidated and pushed aside as an international student. Anyway, I'm glad to know you are doing much better now.

Chioma!! Firstly, Hii! hope you’re doing well. You are an inspirational SW, thank you for advocating and spreading awareness around such important topics. Now, I can’t believe I’m saying this, I went through quite a similar experience around having unexplained chest aches for around a whole year. Nothing helped, Echo test came clear, painkillers didn’t help, I couldn’t find any reason to explain why it was happening until I realised how stress had hijacked my body. This is my 6th in Australia as an international student, the stress around studying, assignments, work, struggle to balance nutrition and well being never ends. With time, it has became easier for me transitioning from bachelors to masters, but it is still quite hard to go through this period.

Thanks for sharing, Chanchal. OMG, 6 years is a long time and yes, stress is not talked about often enough in terms of how it slowly destroys our health. I hope you are near the end and I am glad to hear it's become easier over the years. All the best!

Hi Chioma..this is a really helpful video that will go a longway in helping many resident as well as intending international students. Please could you also do a video to address some immigrant concerns, switching visa categories, bills/taxes or work-life in Australia? If already done, kindly reference. Thank you.

I think this video is addressing me😞. My skin is going through the most, and I'm always dizzy. I'm on my last semester, and the stress is getting to me. I'm on scholarship and I cant take a semester off. I've resorted to take days off studying and just rest.

Don't do as I did o 😊😁I cut them off myself, then saw a dermatologist after (should have been the other way around), but the best way I have found to manage it is through my diet and developing healthy habits to try and balance my hormones. They did not grow back and I am not getting new ones so the strategy is working so far.

Omgggg this Video got me sad, some years ago I also lost a very close friend of mine too from Nigeria in Russia here, a girl almost drowned at the sea and he went to rescue her (a Russian). He rescued her but unfortunately he didn’t make it. It’s been years but I’m still traumatized about it

Good day chioma. Thank you for this. However my question isnt related to this video. I am currently on my visa stage for my student visa and there is a clause asking me to prove i have access to the funds in my sponsors account. My sponsor is my uncle. We share the same sure name. I have no idea on how to go about this, will look foward to your quick reply if you have any helpfull information. Thank you
