This JDM 1994 Toyota Celica GT-Four is a Much More Important Car Than It Gets Credit For

When I first saw this car I have admit to rolling my eyes a little bit. As a gearhead kid, I was raised on American V8s, and the birth of the Ricer movement seemed strange and offensive - not to mention expensive. The cost per HP of a 4 cylinder turbo in 1991 was a hell of a lot more than in a small block Chevy. As the turbo world eclipsed the V8 world, I lost interest and bought a Buick Riviera.
I regret that now, because I missed out on some pretty neat stuff. The Celicas of the late 80s and early 90s seemed a bit dull and nondescript to me at the time, but having learned more about them later in life, I realize what an important and interesting series of cars these were.
That said, the JDM and ricer subculture drives me insane. I'd rather hang out with Porsche enthusiasts or BMW guys, and that's really saying something.

Maybe West Coast is different, but many of us GenX guys here (who are older than Bill!) have been JDM, WRC and Euro nuts since the Malaise Era. We HATED what Detroit represented (Landau Roof Mecca) and were messing with Hondas, Saabs, GTIs & rally cars while the V8 crowd lumbered around in land yachts. Love the ST205 and the 1995 WRC season!!

In order they have been 84, 88Si, 85HF, and current 88Si. Wonderful cars and I hope you can do a review on one someday if you can ever find a low mileage stock model. Impossible as that may be. And as a Honda owner I have the same loathing for Toyota as I do Ford being I am a Chevy guy as well. In England we drive on the left with the steering on the right because back in the day the horse rider would hold his jousting stick in his right hand. Maybe the same for Japan. But your history started a few centuries after that so I guess it wasn't an issue. Regarding turn signal stalks it used to be the case in England that stalks were on the right as in this car. Again there was sense to this as this is the hand you would use to make hand signals. Probably why US cars have turn signals left hand side. In any case Euro rules trashed that and the majority of cars here now have signals left. Maybe next time you do a right-hooker you can quote some jousting knowledge. Just to fill it out a bit, you know.

36:38 I understand Bill's frustration of driving opposite side. Yet feel very natural right hand drive (it really works for my ambidextrous left right oddness) I'm from a country that's right hand drive (Aust.) I was visiting Saskatchewan (left hand dr) and offered to drive a drunk girl home in her pickup one Sat night. I'd never driven left hand drive and it was confusing and i felt totally out of balance by it - i was so bad at left hand drive she and being drunk picked up on it made me stop said it was too dangerous and drove us instead that's how bad i was at it.

Japanese auto culture is multi-faceted, just as it is with the American side. You have the Fast and Furious dullards who only got interested in the scene from that genre of movies, ricing everything out contrary to any semblance of functionality, and you have the more technical-oriented serious people. Seems to be split pretty evenly. The actual owners of JDM-only cars are largely the latter

Looking at this car reminds me of the horror style of the Ford Sierra XR4 in 1984. They were loaded with so much excessive fiber glas parts, which rattled long after you closed the hatchback door, that it reminded you too much of the loud secretary, your boss just hired, with too long plastic nails, eyebrown lifted too high and lips pumped (too much) with botox. The look of this alone should redirect any sane straight man for protection from this weird world gone mad to the nearest gay bar. You can hardly cross the curb and sidewalk to get into the gas station, without damaging or ripping off the low hanging fiber glass skirts, not to mention crossing the speed bumps in the street, where you go to school or your grandma lives. The wing in the rear is an open invitation to scate boarders to hang on for a free ride. It cannot possibly be practical in any other way, other than as storage for Bill's beloved drugs. 🤭

Off the charts Bill, love the dialogue where anything considered not politically correct is brought out, not just aired, but given a gold lamé suit and matching Eldorado to cruise around in 🎉 keep up the good work 🎳🥂🍾🥳💫

I had a Honda prelude that I bought for $800 why that car was really loud I had a 3" pipe. It's like I'm driving a video game car. Remember a long time ago, these people have these low Jack alarm systems keep going off every time I pass by with the obnoxious Exhaust noise vibration.

Wangan midnight, that's a video game written by Michiharu Kusunoki. I can't say that at home depot where I work yet I'll probably get my ass kicked by those goons at my job. But really interesting culture No you wonder why I don't have any friends lol...

It reminds me of Tokyo extreme racing those bastards even though when I'm going like 160 to 170 miles per hour I can't hardly finally tuned it up to 200 miles per hour which is impossible to go in herpin turn when I'm drifting all over the place.. And someone half of those cars have more than 3 to 400 horsepowers even close a 1000.. I used to race only on the video games but in real life I need a high performance muscle car.

Not only that with the drift tires they put these stupid deep dish wheels that they don't even fit oversize tires on them which I don't understand I thought it usually I remember when I had my Suzuki swift 4 door oh my gosh that was a disaster I used to put my rims from the escort and I transferred on the Suzuki every time I driven that I keep smelling rubber oh I forgot it's too big it's oversized that's what low profile tires tires are which I didn't know... I didn't know anything about modding cars at that time Back in 2000 I thought exhaust was the exhaust tip I used to put on my 1st car I'd like a weird pinkish Fort Torres with American racing rims on it I remember that it looked like a disaster with those Clip on fog lights I remember And the coloring greenish bluish Aftermarket headlight bulbs inside of them and then every time when it rains I couldn't see shit everything was green I remember that. I'm done with the import tuning cars because it because it's a disaster when it comes to customization civilization everything goes wrong I remember..

Radio bands are for Japan, the 180 km/h tach confirms it's a Japanese car. Also mini discs were a huge success in Japan. It's probably a real Japanese one. Not sure but there's hints 😂

My buddy and mine are remember he always roasted my car when he had this stupid rice burner Honda prelude I had a 92 but he had it like A97I just didn't give a shit about this these 4 cylinders think they're faster than anything else but I look at it this way since I had my porch 944 and I'm into like luxury cars a course a car there's a lot of people that are douchebags that are bragging about even though they got these low budget cars that's not even worth half of the features that they put through Pep Boys parts on it.. To make a go faster

7:00 That gear shifter looks like it was bought from an “adult” toy store! 7:40 In Australia, the “fart can” has the nickname “fistf**ker” exhausts as you shove a clenched fist into one. I suppose the hentai equivalent is stuffing a whole octopus in one, not just the tentacles. Drifting is a waste of both tyres and petrol. Thank you for using the proper term “seppuku”, not “hari kari”. In science, the oldest has supremacy in things such as species names. I wondered whether LHD or RHD cars were the first to be produced and would therefore have bragging rights. But the first cars had the drive tiller in the centre, as they were carried over from horse-drawn vehicles. The disadvantage in swapping from one to the other is looking into the rear view mirror and smacking your temple into the top of the door sill and then looking at everything bass-ackwards. The metric system is Napoléon’s revenge for losing at Waterloo. Inside 100 subs from getting a button from RU-vid. WOO HOO!
