This show is widely considered to be one of the greatest shows in a generation. I hope you get the same impression! I’m not being dramatic when I say this show defined my childhood and has heavily influenced me well into adulthood! P.S. Fun fact: the four nations in the show are actually based off of real Earth cultures. The Water Tribe is based of Inuit culture. The Earth Kingdom is based off Han Chinese culture (though the Earth Kingdom is huge and there are other cultures scattered about within). The Fire Nation is based off Mayan, Incan and other South American cultures. The Air Nomads are based off Tibetan monks. Also, the bending styles of the four elements are all based off of real martial art styles that represent the nature and general attitudes of their respective elements/nations. The movements for Air bending, for example, are based off of Ba Gua, a passive martial art style that focuses mostly on evasive tactics and constantly staying behind your enemy. If you pay attention, you can see Aang use this fighting style during fight scenes. The level of research and attention to detail that went into this show is insane! Just thought you might appreciate that :)

It is important to remember that these are not supposed to be perfect replications. Like for instance the Inuit don't have blue eyes and they don't actually sail (though their relatives on the Alaskan coast do sail). Thoughts on the first time Aang faces Zuko: Despite the age difference, Aang has been training airbending his whole life, with accelerated training once they figured out he was the Avatar. Also, as Aang said, before he ran away and froze himself in an iceberg, he had friends all over the world from every nation. He had played with (and trained against?) firebenders in his past. On the flip side, this is Zuko's first encounter ever with an airbender, as they were wiped out almost 100 years ago. So Aang already has an idea of what defensive (and offensive) moves that fit his fighting style are best against a firebender.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS SEASON 2 Aang is also an airbending prodigy being the youngest Airbending Master ever (at the time). Zuko is obviously talented but he’s nowhere near a prodigy like Azula (the fire bending equivalent to Aang’s airbending). so even with equal training Aang would probably have a natural advantage (plus he’s the Avatar which must help).

Aang was a once in a lifetime prodigy before he was the Avatar. Zuko has always had to scrape and fight for everything he has, at least in his own mind. Zuko was never going to be able to beat him any more than he would have been able to beat Azula without befriending him.

Firebending is based on energy (as Iroh said, it comes from the breath). The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire. That's why they're the only ones who can create their element. Waterbenders can manipulate water wherever it is though, including vapour, ice, or take it from plants and air.

@@TransparentEclipse I’m not sure there was really meant to be that much comedy in “The Great Divide”, tho? Maybe it’s just cause my background is in art, but I really loved how they used a unique art style for each of the three times someone tells the story of Jin Wei and Wei Jin. It was a very creative bit of visual storytelling that wasn’t really done in many episodes.
@TransparentEclipse
@TransparentEclipse 2 года назад
@@gracehiggins2666 there was plenty of comedy bits in the great divide. The earthbenders lines were almost exclusively comedic relief, sokka had a few one liners like the one about him taking their side because they fed him, the huge aang anime eyes moment, and the resolution of the episode was entirely played for a laugh, basically making everything that had just happened in the episode irrelevant and just played off for a laugh. It’s hard to tell because most of the jokes aren’t funny, only the earth bender gets anything remotely funny in this episode. I agree the art style they used for the lie at the end was cool, but it was about 5% of the episode. The rest of the episode they spend wandering around in a pretty boring landscape visually and artistically, and the episode had nothing to do with the overarching plot of the show. The new characters were one note, boring, and never showed up again, while the main cast all felt extremely out of character with the exception of aang, and even his character feels a bit weird here. The problem with this episode is it’s entirely filler, and yet still doesn’t achieve anything despite being filler. I have nothing wrong with filler, but filler in shows is supposed to be for a purpose. In tales of ba sing se, it’s showing us the characters just having a normal day, as well as developing their characters emotionally. And it’s got some good humor. Episodes like the fortune teller are meant to make the viewer laugh, while also showcasing aangs power and advancing aang and kataras relationship plot lines. Despite being filler, those episodes achieve things. The great divide doesn’t achieve anything, and yet is still filler because nothing of importance happens and it’s boring throughout. Those are my gripes with it, but again if u enjoy it more than other episodes that is entirely ur opinion, and ur entitled to it.

@@TransparentEclipse Wow! It seems you are much more intimately knowledgeable about the episode than I am, despite you claiming to like it less, LOL! A couple points I disagree with though: - The guide does have some comedic lines, but the scene that sticks in my head is his conversation with Aang after the tribes were split up. That scene is almost entirely straight, with no comedic breaks. - “the resolution of the episode was entirely played for a laugh, basically making everything that had just happened in the episode irrelevant and just played off for a laugh.” This is, without a doubt, the biggest difference in a opinion I have with people who don’t like the episode. I could not disagree with you more on this point. The resolution of the episode does not even remotely make light of the episode. And honestly I feel like this is a testament to the weakness of the first ~15 episodes. You were expecting dumb humor like that in “The Fortune Teller”, but this was one of the first episodes that tried to have broader themes, and your response was “durr, it’s not funny.” “I agree the art style they used for the lie at the end was cool, but it was about 5% of the episode.” Wrong. It wasn’t just when Aang was telling his version of the story. There were three unique, distinct art style in the episode. The first was when the Gan Jin were telling the story, the second was when the Zhang were telling the story, and the third was when Aang was telling the story. They were different each time. The rest of your comment is mostly non sequiturs and whataboutisms.

@@-gemberkoekje-5547 I know you didn’t ask me lol. But Death note is probably the best starter anime. Its a classic and kinda of a must watch in the anime community. It’s short, doesn’t go too deep in fantasy, has a great plot and twists. And had a satisfying ending. If your looking for a longer series I recommend Naruto or attack on titan those 2 are tied for my favorite anime.

If you pick anyone of these you should be Hooked some are classics and others are easy and fun to watch. My Hero Academia Haikyuu AssassinationClassroom Hunter x Hunter Love is war Fruits Basket One punch man Naruto Full metal alchemist Seven deadly sins Jujutsu Kaisen This is a movie but damn good: a silent voice These 2 are a little dark but I think you’ll be okay The promised never land Death note ( it’s dark but it’s not as bad as you think once you start, it’s basically a war between the philosophy of is killing bad people okay.

15:12 Somewhere, maybe the graphic novels, it is told that Gyatso used a vacuum air-bending move to suck out all of the air from the room, killing everyone inside including himself. If you take notice, there are no weapon marks on anyone, including Gyatso. He sacrificed himself to stop the Fire Nation soldiers.
