I'm are Italian and for all we the Lancia is not only one car... the heart beat very fast, we Feel pain, and at the same moment we prouv happy... we wait for you to come back..
OMG! This guy is right here in Jacksonville! No wonder the scenery in the video looked familiar. I need to meet him for sure! Great video - one of the best that I have seen this year.
Fast forward 6.5 years later. I just bought the shop where this video was filmed at. RIP, John. I will do my best to take great care of it. It is a huge honor to continue your legacy, sir.
Of course.....the sentences that GM after ww2 ,~1979, lovelike to enjoy cars with front engine but rear-drive....than the german family opel change into only front-wheel drive.....now the quiz-question whats about lancia delta integrale?
That guy has seriously good taste in cars. A Fulvia, an 037, a Delta Integrale, two lovely air cooled 911's, a Giulia Sprint, an early Escort, that Cortina... damn. On top of that, the mighty Delta S4. All that's missing is an Audi S1 and a Peugeot 205 T16, and maybe a Stratos, and I would call that rally car heaven.
hummmmmm, democracy gets the boot. Those who like and don't want negative comments, telling other human beings they've never met to shut up. Those who don't like and their opinion is final; anyone who likes it is a sycophant. Sometimes the comments are more enlightening than the video....
I think old rally cars from Europe are absolutely the coolest cars on the planet. The Lancia drift cars and the Audi Sport quattro are absolutely amazing vehicles.
Totally crazy to think Lancia has fallen all the way down now to just making cars for Italy...maybe. They were in many ways the most innovative company in the 50s and 60s and in the 70s and 80s put out the best rally cars IMHO.
We'll even 00s Thesis was waay ahead of it s time, I own one...it still is a technology beast even for today s standards...And I drove And show it to many VW , BMW, MB fans, yes they had to admit, that Thesis was ahead of it's German rivals...
Kind of agree in terms of engineering with the Twincharger and the AWD, but as a Lancia fan, i admit the car was the most UGLY thing ever rallying, awful x1000 million, and it almost didn't look as the stradale S4, which was quite beautiful. honesty the regulations back then were Hillarious, there was nothing from the original omologation shape.
Lancia Y10 turbo, Delta hf turbo, Delta integrale evo, Beta spider, HPE and coupe, Appia, Gamma Berlina and Coupe and Flaminia. I have driven them all and I can tell you Lancia's were the greatest cars ever built. Even the Fiat era cars were light years ahead. That is the only reason they suffered so badly from the bad press. To be that good was sailing to close to the wind. I will own Lancia's for ever and ever and ever.
Its old feeling when compared to modern cars but beautifully weighted and rides with a certain composure modern stuff fails to have. The steering is light and surprisingly precise, the v6 provides ample power and in 3c form sounds great. To some up they are lovely cars.
Wow what an amazing collection and mindset this guy has. This for me is the first collection I've seen so far that houses THIS many of my dream cars. Alfa Bertones, rally Lancia fulvias, S4, Delta, some muscle cars there, Lotus cortina. Amazing. And he drives them, which is awesome!
Many former WRC champions have a good collections, like Juha Kankkunen have all the group B era cars, tho he recently sold turbo 205 and Audi S 1 evo, but it left good collection still, like S4 which Alen drove in RAC and Biasion in San Remo, the car is next to chassis number which Toivonen had in his S4, so basically same car .
There's a very good reason why nobody has mentioned Mr. Blomqvist & that is because he was never a Lancia works driver & had absolutely nothing to do with the S4. The only time he ever competed in a Lancia was a privately entered Stratos in the '78 Swedish. He was a Saab stalwart & latterly an Audi development driver who kept Mikkola et al honest, especially in snow. He also drove Ford, Peugeot, Mitsubishi, Skoda & Nissan. What he did not do was drive an S4.
If you can't drive them properly, one shouldn't own them. Like a Stradivari - if one can't play the fiddle, one shouldn't be allowed near them. IF (as he says) he loves GpB, how come he doesn't know the names of the legends that drove them? I'd love to own a GpB car, but (forgetting the money for a moment), my driving could never do it justice. The car would need to go to a decent rally driver with the skills to use the car properly. To see this actual car driven in a hillclimb by Peruggini in 2009, on home territory, followed by the present footage just made me weep. The car just NEEDS to come home. Just my own twopence worth!
Toivolainen...what a joke... The guy is REALLY slow with his rocket.... :( Found "notes" in the car.. what a surprise You should see the Pirelli videlo with Alen & Kankkunen really pushing the car to its limits.
How amazing would it be if every successful businessman was like this man. Being simple, humble, not boasting or bragging, just happy with what he has achieved and preserved something that a lot of people liked :)
7:06 "You're Miki Bastion, you're Henri Tovalaien" ..........oh dear. Maybe I'm just being a jerk but if you actually own these priceless rally legends you should at least know the names of who drove them.
thankfully he drives it properly! in the dirt.. too bad it is set up for tarmac.. tyres, suspension... but its a lancia.. they have faults yet still the best cars in the world are lancia's..... think about it; Stratos, Fulvia, 037, delta, S4, montecarlo, and the list goes on..
I watch this video, and I say to myself: it is possible! We all share a passion for cars, but living the dream like this guy is awesome. I like the passion, the memories, the commitment that drive this man! Many thanks Petrolicious, I hope one day, I will be featured by this channel when I buy my dream car!
When henri toivonen & sergio cresto died in -86 they had driving 6 hours that day. 6 HOURS!! Just think about that. Last interwiew in korsika henri said that " this is so exhausting and my brain dont keep up.
Agree. There's a lot of things what killed group B. Anyone could buy/drive a group B. Rallies during 3/4 days with 25+ mile stages all day long. All of this was top sport.
you're entirely right, it could have had the contemporary wheels on it as these were AVON slicks. i've heard though certain rally communities are switching over to slick tires on smooth GRAVEL, which goes against everything i've learned about mechanical grip on dirt but whatever, it seems to work on AWD cars quite well!
It doesn't matter, as he said, he's never going to push it to that speed and if crazy hicks were doing slick races in dirt and gravel roads with heavier, madder cars, he's ok.
I read somewhere that this car could have qualified for the 1986 F1 Portuguese GP in the top 10 (driven by Toivonen). That's how fast it was. Thinking that some crazy dude was driving it on DIRT scares the hell out of me! But that were the '80s.... surely the craziest (and perhaps the best) decade in motor racing history.
yes they tested the car on the Portuguese GP track just before the F1 weekend and with the time they did the Lancia would've qualified for the sixth spot. They were driving an F1 level car on gravel, absolute madness.
Shame he didn't drive it on the road. If it was preped for the Rally Sardinia then it will be tarmac spec. Looks like an ex semi works European Championship car run by Jolly Club for Dario Cerrato in '86. He also needs to learn how to pronounce Miki Biasion and Henri Toivenen's names correctly.. Also, Walter Rohl never drove the S4, he was a works Lancia driver with the 037 but switched to Audi in '84.
RIP Henri Toivonen, add him to the S4 and you get the legend of the F1 Portuguese Grand Prix: As Mr. Campion implied the S4 was ramped up to 1000 bhp to set a qualifying time good enough to place Henri 6th on the grid of the Estoril F1 circuit? Let's put that in context: A rally car comparable to an F1 car; that's the sort of performance were talking about from the mid 80s.
Lancia Delta S4 was as quick as an F1 car of its time, 1985 they did a rally stage on a racetrack (Brand's Hatch) F1 raced on the same year and the Delta S4 got a time equal to mid field F1 cars, absolutely insane.
Evidence of this? Sounds quite fanciful to me, 1986 was the most powerful year for the turbo era F1 cars and 85 was 2nd most powerful year, they were far more powerful, far more lightweight and far more downforce. (1987 was when 4 bar the boost limit was introduced, 1988 it was changed to 2.5 bar)
Never happened I'm afraid, just a myth. No way it could've beat an 80s F1 car in 85 or 86. Even the slowest cars weighed less than 600kg with 700 to 800bhp and tons of downforce. The S4 is incredible in its own right, it might've kept up with an F1 car to 60 mph because of 4 wheel traction, but that's were it would end.
The cortina just isn't right in a left hooker! My dad raced them on Sundays he had them all the lotus being his pride and joy amd the escort Mexico! We are UK Scotland based we still have a couple for the cortinas and cossie RS 500s in storage totally original moonstone!
Best Rally car in the world. Look at Abarth logo... Italians do it simply better! ♥ Look at the rare S4 road version. Simply beautiful! Great car and great story. This person is Very humile.
@ILUV2SK8 504 they are the most successful rally manufacturer in the world... group B wasn't even lancia's biggest success, Delta Integrale is the actual most successful rally car of all time, while delta s4 is the best rally car of all time
he talks a lot about this ballet of brutality, and worrying about the immense power, worrying about brake heat, etc... and i get that this guy isn't a rally driver or anything... but has he even ever felt the power, or the handling, or experienced brake fade? With the driving in the video, I doubt hes even felt the turbo kick in... And roger, it's a tarmac setup, but then it begs the question, what is he doing out there in the sticks anyway on a tarmac setup?
There are +800 comments so I won't read then all. And I have to say, I really like the attitude and humble approachs this gentleman has...but I have to point out the sad fact that this car killed one of the fastest group B drivers of all times and thus ended the era of group B rally cars. It does not change anything said here, but would have been a nice touch to mention Henry Toivonen as part of this cars history.
Oh my God what a collection of legendary cars! S4, 037, Integrale, Fulvia. I'm usually not envious of anybody else's possession but I have to admit that I'm a little bit envious to this guy for his collection :) He seems like a true car enthusiast. My (imaginary) hat is off to you mr. Campion!
SAITZERO dai dai poche storie. As another italian i'd say lets quit whining, enjoy the clips and just celebrate the cars.
Lancia delta evo 2 its the most beautiful car off all time for me. Small but respectful its just well size car, well designed. Its the car of my dreams
Please go back and drive the fulvia fanalone!! That's the first World rally champion and so undervalued!! It deserves Some attention and the story needs to be told!!
Please have a video of this guy walking us around his garage. Never have I seen a private collection of cars that is so perfect and I would want to own more than the one he has.
Jajaja... Saludos desde Argentina.... muy lindo esos autos...
Awesome guy, awesome collection. But for someone who clearly knows a lot about rallying, he should at least be able to pronounce the drivers names... Henry Tourvollen? Miki Bassion? It's Henry TOIVONEN (pronounced "Toyvonen") & Miki BIASION (pronounced "Biazzion"). Furthermore, the car is from Rallye Sanremo which is in mainland Italy, it wasn't until recent years that the rally has been held on the isle of Sardegna.
