Sometimes the bikes get the best of me and this little rascal almost took me out of the game. It's rare that I need to take a break from a bike halfway through, but boy howdy, did I need it with this one. It's a long one - find out why!

Finally some bike maintenance videos where everything doesn't just magically comes appart. It's great looking for help videos, and they never mention I need to break my back to unscrew this, they just do it with 2 fingers, no force needed. Also that looks easier then every single tire installation I've ever done, love me some continental tires.

@@noisepuppet my dad bought a new vehicle because he was tired of wrenching on every car he ever owned. eventually on a weekend he decided to change the brake pads since he figured they must be getting low. on the first wheel, the lug nuts were so tight we had a 6 foot pipe on a breaker bar and all that happened was the nut broke in half leaving like a half inch of mangled nut on there. had to buy a set of nut extractors, rent a massive impact gun, and still had to put a pipe wrench on the impact guns socket before they would turn. this was the same for every lug nut on the jeep. i did have a suspicion that it didnt come from the factory like that, so i bought him a torque wrench for his birthday and he hasn't had that problem again lol

Just spent over an hour and a half this afternoon trying to get the old tires off my wife's Trek Excalibur 7. Tire levers wouldn't fit in the gap between the rim and bead. Soaked it with dishwashing liquid, sprayed it with a bit of water, pushed and pulled, nothing was working. Pulled out my hammer and a flathead screwdriver and started banging away. In the end, after some mechanical violence and a lot of cursing, I got them off and then was delighted to see that the new tires didn't want to go on without a fight. Your video made me feel a lot better.

Even without commentary, I can close my eyes and know what part of the bike you're working on. Please keep it up! Unsolicited tip: when installing the second bead of the tire, after the tube is installed, I always start from the side opposite the valve, just to use a little bit more of the cannel that the valve prevents the bead from setting in. Especially with more difficult tires.

Wringing out every quirk and franken bit in this bike makes my noob mechanic heart soar. It would take me 2X as long to work it out. I built out a 99 GT MTB for my adult daughter that was her heart's desire but it turned out the frame was bent. Not terminally but took a lot of flex and stretch to straighten just enough. And the 3X chainrings were askew. I read Brown's table for setting the chainline with the new cranskset.

You could say it was good enough for who it’s for 😂 I remember when dealing with tight tire beads we had a tool that had one leg that sat on one lip of the rim, and a hinged leg with a hook that went over the tire and hooked onto the opposite bead. You hooked it then pulled the handle over and it levered those tires on. I think we got it from J&B or QBP.

@05:50 A friendly tip for using the DAG-tool: I don’t think truing the wheel is always necessary either, and to minimize the wheel’s ’personality’ affecting the reading, it helps to pick a spot on the wheel (like the tyre logos or something easy like that), and then to _rotate the wheel along with the tool_ when you move it to the 3, 6, 9, 12-o’clock positions. This way any hanger-bendy-weirdiness will show up as intended, but any wheel ’idiosyncracies’ do not. 👍

If you finish installing the tire bead at the valve (and likewise begin removal at the valve), you can take advantage of the fact that everywhere else on the rim, the lowest spot in the middle is available to push over the rest of the tire bead and create maximum slack. Less effort and fewer pinched tubes!

For hanger straightening without truing the wheel you can align it with the same spot on the rim, for example at the valve. Just rotate the wheel as you check different locations.

Dude, I'm absolutely traumatised by all that furniture polish on the wheel and braking surface. Already booked an appointment with my therapist. 😵‍💫

I read this once from a Shimano engineer: the original thick oil that chains come with is applied before the chain is assembled, so it gets between the plates really well, and it lasts longer than any other lube you apply later. Basically it’s the best lubed your chain will ever be, so don’t hate it/remove it 😁

I agree with your reasoning on tubeless for your customers. But for riders who ride a lot tubeless is far superior. Less flat tires, less roll resistance, better traction (MTB riding). Less weight. If you ride regular your tires will wear out before sealant build up becomes an issue. As far as mess, seat the beads then install sealant with syringe with valve core removed.

Instead of Behold, we use a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol for hard to seat tires. It helps with the seating and then evaporates without residue.

It’s a rock hopper thing! My kid has a 2023, Every time I upgrade that bike it’s a project, from tires too crank set it’s been a pain! But those are my problems, I could have just left it alone.

I have the Continental Cross Kings 2.2 on a vintage set of SPIN mag wheels and my god are they a pain to mount!!!! Also those wheels don't require a dork disc😂😂. But my other bikes have them due to your gentle persuasions 😂

Quite the lesson in everything that can go wrong with a drivetrain when the components aren't cared for. Darn kids!

I lather down tires with WD-40 and life is good. I buy it by the gallon, it's a cleaner, it's a temporary lube, it's a conditioner, it's always at hand when I'm working a bike.
