the largest gold nugget ever found in the world was "The Welcome Stranger", found in western Victoria, Australia by two Cornish miners prospecting sites for mines, it weighed in at over 214lbs, more than either of the men who found it!

They literally stumbled upon it. The cart wheel ran over a rock. Dislodged it. When they looked to see what it was, it was a nugget. They were new to the area, just passing through. Thus the name, Welcome Stranger.

Hey Jeff, back in the 90's/early 2000s I worked tugs and barges in Western Alaska and one of our customers was Lloyd Magnuson. He discovered the 122 troy ounce Ganes Creek Nugget. A buddy of mine from Lower Kalskag just retired from the Donlin Creek Mine.

Yeah Ganes creek, we passed on ganes in the late 80's cause we were on pound a week per man. Ganes gold was ugly and quartzy but I bet there's some big quartzy brutes still hiding in the tailings if a guy threw on a 19 round mono.
