What do you think is the best burger chain in the country?

My favorite is still a regional chain found in my area - Culver’s - they feature high quality burgers, fantastic sides, and unbelievably delicious frozen custard (being home-based in Wisconsin, I guess particularly tasty dairy products are to be expected). I was very happy when a franchise opened up in Southern Illinois where I now live.

I’m a huge fan of Freddy’s, but I’m not sure how regional it is. My experiences with Five Guys have been hit or miss, but boy are they pricey 💰💰💰

Imho, In and Out. But Five Guys maybe just as good. But, being from SoCal, contenders are Tommy's, Hamburger Hamlet, Bob's Big Boy (gone), Fat Jack's and if you're ever driving by Lompoc CA take the turn off for the road to Jalama Beach and have a Jalama Burger. Its a little known secret with a beautiful drive, a beautiful beach with a campground and a tiny grocery store with a snack bar with displays of Indian artifacts and old fishing photos. They make a very very good burger.

I would drive past 10 Five Guys to get to one In-N-Out.

Five Guys is definitely my favorite but a Small cheese burger with a small fries (no drink, no bacon, no 2nd patty) is almost $13! It’s still a fairly large meal but it’s double the price of a Double Double by the time you’re done.

No contest. In-n-Out is about half the price of Five Guys.

Five Guys started here in Arlington Virginia in the 1980s, We don't yet have In and Out Burger on the East Coast, would be great to eat there too.

as someone that grew up in Southern Cali it has to be in and out. it taste like home. Cali 🥰

Of the 6 listed, I’d choose Whataburger any day of the week, but my overall favorite wasn’t on the list. That one is Culver’s, hands down!!

If you don’t give McDonald’s, Burger King, and White Castle as options to be picked from then you can’t really know that they wouldn’t have come in first. Not saying they would have just pointing out that only allowing people to pick from relatively new places means a relatively new place wins by default. Give those three as options too then these results will be far more accurate.

I've become a burger snob. In Dallas we have locally owned gourmet burger joints like Liberty Burger, Twisted Root and Haystack burgers. Real meat that is thick and juicy, fresh veggies, fresh buns, real bacon, fresh real potato fries. One store up in Denton TX, Burger Time Machine, has a hamburger with peanut butter on it and it is damn good. I drive 40 miles for a Time Machine peanut butter burger

I was excited that 5 Guys and Shake Shack are now in Los Angeles. They are both pretty good, but 5 Guys is seriously overpriced, and since In N Out is a block away from the local Shake Shake, I go there. For me, the choice is clear.

I'd rather go to Wendy's.

Yes, Five Guys is the best, if you want to spend $15 just for a burger. For the price, I choose Red Robin.

I went to In & Out at lunch time on Saturday and I could not believe how short the line was, I had no intention of going there but I could not pass up the short line, the Single is now 4.10 and the Double Double is 5.90 in Ca.

Culver’s has a great menu! A full dinner or burgers and fries. Great place!

The 2 Five Guys I’ve tried were a major disappointment after having In-n-Out’s consistently excellent quality and taste. Btw, I travel quite a bit, so my In-n-Out sampling is more than a local outlet. 5 Guys? Who cares. Not me!

I used to write "The Burger Beat" for a restaurant guide and immediately was blown away out West by In-N-Out Burger but I'm on the East coast now - not enough of them, Red Robin likewise. Had one in Wisconsin, but not enough of their good food. Culver's again is so excellent and still expanding and I'm dyin' for the Walleye! Shake Shake tasted good, but was that where their little tiny burgers (no, not sliders either) at $3.99 start out as golf balls which the cooks flatten on the griddle with a spatula? I learned to order two! For my money the best value, taste, and coverage is the Carl's Jr./Hardee's combo franchise with such excellent, tasty Angus beef , giving CKE smooth nationwide coverage. And for those managing their blood sugars their superb Frisco burger comes on grilled sourdough bread with bacon and swiss. Sourdough has a low glycemic index of 15 not like a bun at 85 which is almost a pile of sugar (gi of 100!) Forget the impossible whopper, Hardee's has a tasty gourmet lineup. I'm not sure if the Carl's Jr.'s have the sourdough.

I think this might have more to do with distribution than anything else. Five Guys is now all across America. In and Out, Whataburger, Shake Shack and Culvers are regional, and a lot of people might never have had any of them, but both In and Out and Shake Shack are from high population areas, which would skew the results. Steak and Shake has closed many of its locations - we lost all but one of ours in the whole city. So, in short, I don't this that you can say which chain is best - and we don't really need to crown a victor. We have an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

In & Out - Double Double with those beautiful seasoned fries. The best L.A. burger I ever ate, though, was the Fatburger. Also, Tommy's deserves a mention.

The best Burger I have eaten lately was on a road trip from Texas to Florida. A bar and eatery on the border of Alabama and Florida called FloraBama. It is a local hangout and draws a lot of the vacationers and locals. Big juicy burgers full of so much good stuff it is hard to eat all of it. Beats any chain where I have ever eaten a burger.

I tried Five Guys twice, because I got dragged there, and said never again...again. I see them on these lists and my wife has not tried them so I might try them one more time. The fries are great. In ‘N’ Out is the best for me.

The problem with most of these, excluding Whataburger, is their limited hours of operation. We like to go out and top off the evening LATE at night with a fabulous burger. We have no problem doing this in Amsterdam {Burger Bar), or London or Madrid. I have yet to try a FIVE GUYS burger, since they never server past 10 p.m.

My #1 go to is BurgerFi but I really like Freddy’s Steakburger too.

I only go to five guys to get their cajun fries, then I go to Whataburger for burgers since I'm in Texas. But if I get a chance, I would go for Culver's for burgers when available. I used to travel to a lot to different states for work, and by far the most memorably delicious burger I've eaten from a fast food chain is from Culvers. Shake Shack, In and Out, etc. just aren't as memorable for my taste.

As an east coast liver, we need In N Out on our side of the Atlantic. 5 Guys is the best in regards to upgrading your burger with addons like bacon and other condiments. And they give you a gang of fries even with a small order.

With Five Guys at well over 1500 locations and In-N-Out at 358 locations, who do you think the winner is? There's one location in Los Angeles where In-N-Out and Five Guys are next door to one another, the In-N-Out is far more popular. Standing in between the two is burger goodness overload I must admit.

Five Guys in my town went out of business a few months ago. It never really took off and the pandemic finished it.

I agree with Shake Shack. Love their burgers. Pricey but delicious! Of the popular chains that have been around, the one I prefer which wasn't mentioned is Carl's Jr.

Culver's is miles above the rest in their food, can not beat this place !

How did Smashburger and Culver's not make this list?

After years of seeing White Castle on Food Network and RU-vid vids I finally got a chance to get one in Vegas earlier this year. It must be an acquired taste. I really hated it... 5 Guys is OK, but WAY too expensive. We have In N out now in my area, but honestly I'd prefer a Whopper or even a Big Mac... I think that what you like is based on what you grew up with. Most people like their Mom's (or their neighborhood's) cooking... LOL!

5 Guys: They serve no fries before their time

I think a chain has to be national to be considered, which eliminates In-N-Out.

Comparisons have to be fair. You can't escape 5 Guys with change from your $20. So, the best burger joints are In 'n Out and Steak 'n Shake. Both of these serve a great basic burger and don't charge to make the burger to your taste. Well, they're still much cheaper than 5 Guys, but I just learned, due to the cost of everything, Steak 'n Shake now does charge more for special order. Onions are an extra $1, and so on. With inflation, comparing similar cost burgers nowadays is impossible...

My thoughts on Five Guys: Great if you love your burger one way, Over Cooked & Dry. Blandest Topping I have ever had on a Burger. Best French Fries EVER! If In-N-Out had these Fries, I could get on board with loving In-N-Out as much as everybody else. By the way my favorite Burger chain is "Fat Burger". They are a West Coast chain that we have also in Las Vegas, where I live. I might be the only Asian that I have ever seen in a Fat Burger, I have no idea why? Red Robin is Second, because of price & actual time it takes to actually order & receive your order. To be fair, I have never had Whataburger, Culver's or Shake Shack.

I have never eaten a 5 Guys burger so I don't know if they taste better than In & Out. I walked into a 5 Guys once to see what the hype was about but looked up at their menu and the prices and immediately walked out and drove right down the street for my In & Out Double-Double animal-style, and paid less than half what those 5 Thieves charged.

Not that many people have access to Whataburger. Still my favorite among the chains. I mean 5 guys is ok but the prices... WOW. The others I can live without. Most don't have any stores within 200 miles of me now.

Culver's is good, but more for other items besides burgers. My favorite is Shake Shack.

I’ve had Whataburger & In ‘n’ Out and honestly neither are that great to me. Of the ones listed i tend to like Five Guys and Steak ‘n’ Shake. DQ also makes a really good burger.

I went to 5 guys once in 2018ish? I was surprised by the high price and the fact that my burger and greasy bag looked like someone sat on it. I thought it was a joke. Haven’t been back.

When you take these types of surveys, you need to watch out for “favorite bias.” This is where the person being surveyed voted for their favorite choice just because it was the most convenient or most visited choice, and not necessarily the most objective choice. Someone can be asked “what is your favorite coffee shop?” They might answer choice A over choice B, not because it offers better coffee drinks but because it is where most of their friends go and because it is the most recommended by their friends. Don't care what they say, but Red Barn was always my favourite. There was just something about the flavour that really struck my fancy. No frills, special sauce or any crap like that. 🤫

There’s more to a burger than just the meat. Burger King’s tomatoes, lettuce and onions look like are from the supermarket dumpster. No comparison to the top places. My vote goes to In-N-Out.

Five Guys gets number one. Number two and I cannot find one where I live in Georgia but when I lived in the northeast I used to hit Shake Shack quite often.

It used to be Six Guys until they ground up #6 into hamburgers.

I've been to Red Robin once and will never go back. Their burgers are TINY and over-priced.

I chill at White Castle cause it’s the best but I’m fly at Fatburger when I’m way out West.

Five guys has my vote. The quality is better and i don’t mind paying more.

One visit to 5 guys was enough for me. Greasy was the predominant characteristic not only their burgers but their fries as well. I like a juicy burger with the nice flavor of caramelized meat. I don't get it how so many people like 5 Guys unless their only reference point is McDonalds.

Without doubt the best fast-food burger I've ever had was at Backyard Burger. It's delicious Black Angus beef cooked over a flame on a grill not a griddle which makes a difference in flavor. There aren't many locations around which is why so few people have heard of it. If you see one give it a try.

I agree with 5Guys. I can't understand why Whataburger is even in the running. The ones I've been in were awful- stale buns, dry meat, order wrong. I didn't even finish the burger it was so bad.

Funny how Whataburger is considered a new kid on the block when it was actually started 5 years before McDonalds and 4 years before Burger King??????????? I ate my first Whataburger in Corpus Christi before either McDonalds or Burger King sold their first burger! Yet, if I had a choice between Whataburger and Five Guys, I'd go with the Guys (don't tell my Texas friends)

Australia's very 1st Five Guys opened up in the western suburbs of Sydney NSW just last month. So far many mixed reviews. Most is about the extraordinary prices you have to pay to feed the family. Biggest downfall is NO DRIVETHROUGH..!

Don't even like the 5 guys burgers and they're expensive. Red Robin has excellent burgers but I could literally dine at a steakhouse for the same price. Burgers to me are a fast-food item and should be sold as a quick and inexpensive meal. Not saying there's no market for "gourmet" burgers but for me a hamburger should be more affordable.

I think McDonald’s and Burger King are the most popular because they’re the only fast food places in some areas. We have drive to the next county to get something different.

Shake Shack is fairly unaffordable as a burger place here in CA since inflation hit and now in 2024 minimum wage was raised to $20/hr. In N Out still makes their Double-Double combo just over $10, but closer to $20 at Shake Shack.
