When do they stop tuning their instruments?
Responding to a hot take about /mu/ Essentials not being a good way to get into music.
Note: This isn't like a permanent change of the Let's Argue format or anything. The latest post just didn't yield a very good episode, so what makes the most sense is posting a few of the responses as standalone mini-vids. Hopefully keeps the segment from getting monotonous.

Imagine being someone who only listens to radio music. Deciding they're gonna go on 4chan for music suggestions. That seems like a weird leap even in the first place.
@Hopesfallout
@Hopesfallout 3 года назад
Does it? Imagine you're one of the many braindead losers on 4chan. You're completely self-absorbed and on the lookout for reasons to think you're better than anyone else. How about starting to listen to exclusive music styles? Most music fans (myself included) share a trait or two with the /pol/ bores...

I feel it, but it's honestly true with any form of culture that one gets very much into. Currently experiencing it with movies, having been a critic for a few years now. Very rare to get that WTF-mindblow like I did when I first saw Tetsuo, Hausu, Daisies, Jeanne Dielman, Playtime etc. Being a nerdy kid, I also had this experience with video games quite fast. First I got into retro games, then experimental indie stuff and then just bored with the whole medium. Also accompanied with starting to study and create an academic career in video game research. Gladly it's a rapidly evolving medium, so with a few years of playing less games, stuff in the indie scene is starting to surprise me again.

this is my tweet and mainly what i meant was based off my experience and what i assume is the best route. i started out a hip hop head and eventually got into death grips after awhile then started unveiling albums on that list. i feel like anyone who doesn’t really know much about music or doesn’t even have taste (due to possibly no experience) won’t be able to appreciate the beauty, harshness, or oddities than many of those albums present, especially without knowing what albums they have currently inspired that you may be listening to today. i saw vaush start with that list while “knowing nothing about music” and i think it may steer him away from music as a whole with the different “complex” albums or like Anthony said, strip him of valuing “weird” albums later when he does them all simultaneously or as like a checklist. hope that all makes sense.

Piss Warm Take- I really believe that Mindless Self Indulgence should be considered as Proto-Hyper Pop. Though I agree that sonically their sound is not exactly in the same vein of the likes of 100 Gecs Etc.. But they truly share the concept, and the general spirit, of making super melodic hook-heavy pop songs and then take it apart and bring it all to a wild and quirky extreme while blending as many genres as possible, which are generally the same genres Hyper Pop is blending today- Hip Hop, Metal and Heavy Electronic music. With all the recent talk and rising popularity of the genera I don't think I ever heard them being mentioned.

Despite being a huge fan of /mu/ essentials, I do kind of agree with the sentiment Anthony is critiquing. Part of the power of albums like Trout Mask Replica or Bisch Bosch is that they take the parameters of rock music to their furthest extreme or they completely undermine them- obvs the Rolling Stone 500 best albums of all time list is kinda basic (and problematic in a host of other ways), but it’s pretty hard to understand WHY many albums are so groundbreaking or what tropes they are subverting if you haven’t even heard the jazzy, crooner rock that Scott Walker’s late style evolved from or the bluesy, rugged vocal style that Captain Beefheart is pushing as far out as possible or the blues riffs that he’s superimposing, seemingly at random, over one another, or the blues song structures that he’s mangling- sometimes subtly, sometimes radically. Without that context I can see how a Bisch Bosch might just sound like random noise rather than a bold statement in a long- standing musical discourse. Also, if you want some music which is completely unlike anything you’ve heard before then you should definitely try out some more wacky contemporary classical shit like Christopher Cerrone or Andy Akiho or Heinz Holliger or Claude Vivier’s operas or Michael Daugherty’s ‘Dead Elvis’ or Bartók’s quartets or Boulez or Adés- I recognise that you know a lot more about this sort of music than you let on in your vids and you seem to know about Cage and Stockhausen, but for someone who seems to have ‘heard it all’ in regards to popular idioms it seems like a pretty logical direction to move in.

Idk if this has happened to anyone else but I used to constantly try to find new music when I was younger just because I wanted to hear things that were new and exciting. And I remember listening to a few artists and like not being able to get into them at all they were just too weird for me. But then years later and I "rediscover" these artists I couldn't just get into and all of a sudden it's like I like them now because so much time has passed and my tastes evolved and matured enough to include more weird or experimental stuff. Idk I just think that's cool that all it took was a change of perspective.

@@khodges72 idk what u mean by “constantly”, perhaps that was a typo. But that album was mega fresh for its time. Jazz rap was a thing 20 years before; but it added a modern and unique twist. Same way that daughters album was sort of a darker blend of stuff that bands like Swans or even every time I die had done before. KSG was a natural evolution of sounds we had heard weeks before on Ye. I’m just talking something that sounds super fresh and gets u excited like it’s the first time you’re hearing a specific sound done a specific way. There was nothing quite like TPAB before it came out, hence its significance and impact.

1:21 generationally, this is becoming a less common experience in the age of digital streaming. I went my whole life without being exposed to popular radio outside of occasionally hearing it from my little brothers room in 2012. Now music tastes being at one point informed by your parents, I don't think that's a universal experience that's going anywhere anytime soon. If you grew up listening to De La Soul, even an 11 year old can get into ODB; so I have faith enough in human understanding to believe a "normie" would at least be able to grasp the broader strokes of most of /mu/'s favourites if they're open enough to try in the first place.

@Anthropomorphic
@Anthropomorphic 3 года назад
@Ethan Gilligan Basically, he mentioned on Twitter that he liked electro swing, was mocked en masse by half the internet (including Fantano), and decided to respond by going on a quest through the /mu/ list to learn what "real" music is. He's found some stuff he likes, but is considering abandoning the list in favor of something less esoteric. I forget exactly how he put it, but he feels like it's actually kind of narrow, and also bypasses a lot of musical milestones in favor of more obscure works that are further downstream.
