I have an original GBC and the Analogue Pocket and I have to say some GB(C) games with a more complex art style tend to look better on the original screen. Not everything scales well on a bigger screen.

I'll be interested if the dpad is any good on this. That's the Analogue Pocket's Achilles heel, the dpad doesn't feel good and gives false diagonals. A portable system that doesn't have a good accurate dpad is effectively worthless to me.

Care to elaborate. From the site it reads "Also compatible with custom lithium ion pack, rechargeable through console." It comes with 3 AA batteries. So does that mean it's battery powered, or is it rechargeable through the console. I couldn't find this custom lithium ion pack that it's compatible with. Is that included with the unit or do I purchase that separately.

@@JetteroHeller83 The Verge did an interview with Lucky. He said you can put NiMH AAs in it and it'll charge them through the USB-C port. "It lasts 24 hours on three standard AA batteries, Luckey tells me. While it’ll probably ship with alkalines, there’ll be an optional lithium-ion pack, too - and he tells me you can even recharge your NiMH AA batteries over USB-C!"

What is a good option for pokemon gen 1-2? I want to play on real carts and would love to have the ability to play at faster speeds. I would prefer a Gameboy Advance SP style clamshell body if that is a choice, and preferably OLED due to playing in bed at night. Any suggestions?

I'll be buying two or three of these for sure. Good gift, and i want one for myself. My only issue with the funnyplaying gbc is that the screen resolution is too high, so the pixel art doesnt look as good. The fake scan line mode makes motion terrible

This missed it's window. Funny Playing FPGA GBC is a better option. And what drive will there be to offer support for a device that is a limited run? The FPGBC will be around for a while. Price wise, the Analouge Pocket is a much better option with the dock.

I picked up the RG35xx SP and loaded up MuOS custom firmware on it today and its hittin all the right spots. A few more tweaks on MuOS and it beats out all the other RGxx cfws for sure.

Always good to have another option to play games. After the far cheaper open FPGA gameboy just reviewed I can’t see the justification to upgrade to this, might be more premium but at that price point most people will just get the Analogue Pocket which can do alot more. I feel if this were $50 less would be the sweet spot for GB enthusiasts. Besides that it’s pretty for sure

Most likely, since the original Game Boy line was region free to begin with. Portable Nintendo systems didn't introduce regional lockout until the 3DS.

Just because you want it to be so, doesn't make you less wrong. Emulation is taking instructions for a guest architecture, then interpreting them into instructions for the host architecture. An FPGA implementation instead creates hardware that's compatible with the original instructions. It's not emulating, it's just running the code as given. And before you bother trying to quote Wikipedia, just because more people are incompetent and banding together doesn't make factually incorrect suddenly correct.

You're right. Software emulation is different from hardware emulation. The programmable nature of FPGA instruction set makes it hardware emulation. Is it better than software emulation? Sure, but it's still a form of emulation. Does calling it emulation make the experience worse? Not in my experience with my Analogue Pocket. I love it.

I feel like the writing is pretty much on the wall for Analogue being the king of pre-DS handheld gaming thanks to the fact that it does what it sets out to do really well and also has a docking option. I appreciate you covering all these competitors though because Analogue ain't perfect and there is definitely room for them to get knocked down a peg, but I feel like no one will be able to take the market from them without offering the docking technology - that is a huge reason why both the Steam Deck and Switch are insanely popular and that's no less true for the pocket. Every time I see a competitor being billed as a serious competitor to the Pocket and it doesn't have a dock I just wonder how anyone thinks it will stand a chance.

Looks cool, but have so many handhelds just cant justify another. Think he is marketing to more mainstream, to people who dont know Pocket even exists. Seems pretty smart if so, will get many more customers than the niche Pocket would attract via word of mouth and select social media. I think of it like the Atari Station at Costco, people walk by and say "I loved Atari as a kid" and bought one, feel this is taking a similar approach.

I have Koss Porta Pro. They are very good headphones sound quality wise, especially for their price. I've actually had several pairs over the years. There is a reason why they keep producing them since 1984. As for the console, let's be honest, the Pocket makes a lot more sense, especially at the price they are asking for. It will find its customers, but it is going to be just a novelty thing, that's it.

When you see all the talks the company has been doing explaining things like the screen, it really doesnt seem like just another clone. While not having as much compatibility as something like the Analogue Pocket, it appears this device went above and beyond to make a display to modernize GB/GBC while retaining its unique color palette as well. They created an entire new screen just for this device, not something preexisting or off the shelf. Very cool device if you are big into original Game Boy or GB Color.

That's insane and this sounds like a vanity product to impress his friends. OK, so they're only going to make a limited number of these things. That's nice. Now how long are they going to support it? What happens if a firmware/FPGA/BIOS bug pops up in the future? Will anyone be around to fix it? No thanks. I've got a highly-modded GBA SP, an FPGBC, an Analogue Pocket, and a DS Lite, 3DS, & 2DS that suit me well enough. And the cheap-as-chips FPGBC just got a new 1.09FW update the other day.

There's nothing about this device that makes me want it more than a FPGBC or the analogue pocket. Twice the price of the FPGBC and way less features than the Pocket. Maybe this is just a passion project for the creators, but i doubt they will sell very many of them

With headphones you do not get what you pay for type thing. You pay for hype and marketing budgets. Take gaming headsets for example... A $250 headset doesn't sound half as good as $25 kz iem's or moondrop, etc. Multi driver in-ears are leaps and bounds above cans in terms of clarity because there is much less reflection delivering the sound directly to your ear. Having direct drivers for bass and multiple balanced armature handling different frequencies is amazing. Pickup some kz zst's for $13 and tell me if you own anything that says gaming on the box that sounds that good... Then try the zs10's or the zax's. I also love the CCA c12's and I'm using kz s2's right now to watch this video. They're about $25 and beyond worth it.

i wish i could get all of these new retro consoles with apropriate cartriges.. its just that... having a bad coke habit od being a carcaine enthusiast seems like a cheaper option these days. And with all the demakes/remakes we get for switch and pc nowadays theres just not enough time to go thru all these. And it makes me sad.
