Stuttering usually happens because the developers did not provide a way to compile shaders on the first launch of the game. Because of this when a new shader is introduced in a level or an effect happens that has a shader you haven't seen before the game has to stop and compile it quickly. This causes stutter.

The entire industry moving to Unreal is NOT a positive thing, that just means Epic would have the same sort of vendor lock-in that Adobe does in the photo and video editing world. A one-vendor solution does not make a healthy marketplace. Unreal Engine is amazing, yes. But it can not be the one solution to rule them all. Unity (despite their foolishness) and Godot are very important to also take into consideration, if you want the games industry to thrive without falling into the hell that is vendor lock-in. Also, on Bethesda's engine, it's creaky as hell, but the reason they keep using it is that it allows insanely fast iteration. In Creation Engine, you can prototype a level in 30 minutes with very little effort, and iterate on it FAST, because of how it's object placement works. The engine basically takes the concept of prefabs to it's logical conclusion, in that you can have a massive prefab library and drop those prefabs into a scene in seconds, and then playtest almost instantly with no compilation. It's an impressive bit of tech, albeit very long in the tooth, and desperately in need of removing decades of tech debt and legacy cruft.
@D4C_LoveTrain1
@D4C_LoveTrain1 День назад
100% the problem with the creation engine is the lack of development. Most in-house engines have their own department or entire studio. When Skyrim released BGS had 2 programmers for their engine. For FO4 they had help from ID because they didn't have enough people.

UE is an amazing engine, yes, and dropping the Slipspace engine is a great idea... for 343i/Halo Studios, because, like with Bethesda's engine, it hasn't been properly maintained in ages. But for everyone to adopt Unreal, that's a monopolist's dream. For all of Tim Sweeney's posturing, what he wants most is a platform LIKE Steam so Epic can make a ton of money. Unification under Epic Games is literally the worst idea. Typical UE game has poorly optimized render pipeline, which in combination with TAA/DLSS results in a blurry, clunky image with 10x hardware requirements. That's why we have modern games with 2015 graphics, but blurry and on modern setups. Developers publish requirements with the upscalers enabled, so you should pay Nvidia or AMD extra "tax" for a more expensive GPU to be able to play the game in a native resolution.

@@Zorro33313 not every game needs unreal, unless it’s an open-world with a day/night cycle. You can make a great game on source, for example. My point is that unreal is not bad as a tool itself, but that misuse of its features and severe mistakes in the development process lead to unoptimised and crappy games with budgets bloated to hundreds of millions. Some indie developers make much better games with a fraction of AAA budgets and much better performance both because of skill and fundamental knowledge. AAA studios on the other side, don’t care about the product itself nor the developers. They only care about the investors, so the Epic Games with their “universal” tool which consumes a lot of hardware resources if used by developers with skill issues, so the nvidia and amd with more powerful and expensive hardware to compensate that synthetic demand.

I made it about 5 minutes in before stopping. This terrible framerate was apparent in the video of the woman walking around through various environments while lights turn on and off as well. UE5 is not very performative. The game somehow looks very harsh without frame generation, possibly because of the sharpness of all the objects (motion blur disabled of course) which does not look good in movement without some degree of blur or very high FPS. The only thing holding AMD back right now is having accelerated hardware for BVH's and AI processing. AMD needs something comparable to DLSS and Ray Reconstruction to be competitive in RT. The good news is that it looks like both of these issues might be solved when RDNA 4 rolls out.
@Fezzy976
@Fezzy976 День назад
they have had BVH processing since RDNA2, what killed the performance was that the end render point after the BVH was calculated fell back onto the shaders. RDNA3 tried to improve this with double pump shaders and a wider BVH instruction path on the RT cores, it helped quite a lot by increasing RT performance from RDNA2 - 3 by around 30-50%. Only problem was that Nvidia were already 2-3x faster, and had hardware that was capable of denoising PT and running it with the advent of frame generation. I expect top end RDNA4 will match around the RTX4070 in terms of RT performance and around 4070Ti/4080 in terms of raster. It won't be until RDNA5 or 6 where AMD will finally merge CDNA and RDNA to make UDNA. Where we will finally get all that bespoke fixed function hardware units in real RT cores and "tensor"like cores. Just look at MI350X to see what I mean.

The thing with engines is that you need your own, if you need a specific feature no other engine can provide. That is why bethesda keeps using its own creation engine. Other engines struggle with a player dropping a thing in an open world game, leaving for multiple hours, saves and restarts moving away far beyond the renderdistance only to come back and have the object still where it was dropped. RAGE deletes objects, UE doesn't store those and Unity does neither. So you would need to write a database to run in sync with the game than is capable to put objects where they were if you want that. or you use the creation engine, which does all that.

Fixed function hardware has always preceded integration and software emulation. it happened with FPU's, Processor Cache, graphics. Nvidia only started putting tensor cores into their GPU's because it was an immediate solution to enable raytracing as a marketable feature.

Why dont you talk about the problems U5 ahs? what other (big and little) developers have with that motor? the forum responses and threath about the limitations, problems and features being getting deleted? or how some studios need to midified almost a 50% of U5 to have what they need foe they games? Too much prices (cocksucking deep throat) but less real critisism

I love how everyone in the comments talks about Nvidia and the Unreal engine but what matters most in this video is the awesome AI generated rendering we're getting with Runway. And how this tech, if focused on, improved upon and made to run real time, will change gaming 10 times over what RTX and Megalights ever had and ever will.
@madpistol

It just isn't that easy. If the PS5 is running this, just imagine what an RTX 4090 could do with it. Sometimes I think people forget that Nvidia's current crop of GPUs are faster at every power level. Yes, the 7900 XTX is faster than Nvidia's similarly priced GPUs (because Nvidia overprices their current hardware), but it also uses way more power than a similar performing Nvidia GPU too. There is no such thing as a free lunch; if it runs well on a 7900 XTX, it more than likely runs even better on an RTX 4090.

It's a moot point. UE5 is not going to run on anything GTX. Plus, the biggest problem for the industry isn't graphics, but bad games. That's why Black Myth Wukong and Stellar Blade had to be unfairly excluded from awards nominations, and why hundreds of millions of dollars and 8 years of development produced a game with the lifespan shorter than a fruit fly.

If everyone used the same engine, progress would slow as there would be no competition. Also unreal would have a monopoly and we all know how dominant companies act. They start by introducing insane terms, then spyware, then the belief that they own everything you do. Much as I love and am astounded by Unreal's reveals, I pray they never take over.

My main concern with UE5 for Halo is how UE can handle the Halo style physics. I cant think of many UE games that had great physics that was nearly as fun as halo, they have the graphics tech on lock but what about moddability and physics? We already know UE5 games have horrible optimization but i dont think itd be an issue for some bigger studios.

If devs could get simple to use and efficiently performing tools to use generative AI to upscale and "regenerate" games on an object by object basis, one could take a simple cube geometry with not but an object ID attached to it, and have the AI regenerate the object in frame as a wooden crate with lighting, shaders, and more complex seeming geometry based on the assets it's been trained on for that object ID. Additionally, if real time ray tracing could be generated frame by frame by the engine using bounding zones associated with each light source and reflective object not entirely unlike what was done with Doom 3, rather than having to simulate each light ray in each scene, it could greatly reduce the workload associated with that pass. You could then cull any and all lights and their associated bounds by determining which ones come into frame and after how many bounces each one enters the frame and you could then cull any objects not lit by said light zones that are in frame. The devs could then tune this culling to their needs to only remove things that are completely unlit, even if in frame, or they could crush the brightness and saturation levels for their stylization and performance needs to make it cull things that are dark, even if still slightly lit.

Still distinctly remember those days when Intel used to insult AMD on their presentations calling them "Imitator". Intel was a pioneer of Monopolistic Move. Sonner or later Nvidia will learn the same lesson but much more harder than Shintel did. It's not the AMD that I fear which will obliterate Nvidia and its pride, but any Chinese GPU manufacturer which is making miraculous progress in the Industry. Bigger they are, Harder they fall. If me and this comment survive, we will meet again hopefully when it's time. Bye for now!

Honestly the megalights Ray tracing looks awful. It destroys the fidelity, introduces extreme softness and lack of fine detail. Pause the video and look at the floor mesh and the loss of detail inside the pods. You lose the texture and the pods are just a yellow blob, instead of seeing the inside of the pod and condensation.

*RTX doesn't just mean RT* I wish RU-vid channels would get the message. NVidia was pretty clear early on, yet most people still perpetuate that RTX= Ray Tracing which is not accurate. "RTX" also includes DLSS. Besides, "Ray Tracing" isn't going anywhere simply because EPIC has Global Illumination methods that are less taxing. We are headed towards FULLY ray-traced/path-traced games. That's not really debatable. UPSCALING matters far more than ray-tracing IMO anyway. Who cares if the Global Illumination is more efficient than Ray Tracing if FSR upscaling to compensate for the performance loss results in visual artifacts that ruin the experience?

You're so SO wrong. No, execs of studios will ALWAYS find a way to mismanage resources and mistreat people, and progress of UE will only give them all of the incorrect excuses to pressure their devs. Game development is not tech thing, but management thing. It still is that within tasks, and only becomes tech thing only within details. Failures of large studios have their origins in stockprice manipulation and creative accountancy, to find excuse for cashing in bonuses. Making games properly was never a focus.

Bethesda's engine is the source of none of their problems and changing it for another engine, especially UE (which has plenty of its own flaws) is only going to make the problems worse because it's down to the management and how they usually develop to a "she'll be roight mate" standard. (eg. The 60fps limitation is easily fixed even as far back as Oblivion with fMaxTime, Bethesda just never took the time to bother setting the defaults up so it can handle above 60fps operation. They'd be just as likely to go for the simplest "she'll be roight mate" style solution in a tonne of places whether they're in UE or Creation or even something else like CryEngine or RAGE.)
@TheDemocrab
@TheDemocrab День назад
Not to mention, look at UE game modding...Far, far, far more limited than anything under Creation simply because Epic wasn't ever as focused on that kind of modding. You'd pretty much kill off the main drawpoint Bethesda still has. ...that and UE is so goddamn overrated simply because it's easy to develop in and looks good. It's poorly optimised especially when talking script-heavy games and is badly suited to stuff like simulators and the like. Even Ark's optimisation issues are because UE simply isn't designed for that kind of game with that much background crap going on. Even beyond the monopolisation issues the entire industry moving to UE has made games feel a lot more generic than they used to even when most developers were using Renderware. (largely cause Renderware was focused on Rendering, most of the other aspects of an engine were made by each developer themselves)
@ashamahee

Although I would love to see Bethesda move to Unreal for some reasons I can also see it being the death of the modding scene as most games done in Unreal that I have tried have very limited modding communities compared to engines such as the one BGS uses.

This is a piece of it but I think AMD working with Sony to make the console ray tracing will have just a big an effect, though we will probably have to wait for the ps6 but at that point raster will be dumped and raytracing will also just be easier to implement with no reason to bother with raster.
