This Noctua D14 is from 2009.... How Well Does it Perform in 2020?

When I pulled a Rusty Old Noctua D14 from an X58 old build a while ago, I thought I would sideline it until the right opportunity came up. and well looking at it the other day I decided to give it a bath overnight and it came up really nice. And since the original fans work (still 10 years later), I thought... how well does it stack up against new coolers...? The results may shock you vs the D15 / Deepcool 3 and H115i RGB Platinum with a i9-9900KS.

@@edgelordcutting , Only the second, 140mm, fan is problematic. If your fan is the same height as the middle fan (165mm case clearance needed) then you've got up to 32mm for the DDR4 memory with the NH-D15... the Corsair LPX memory is 31mm so should work and of course you can move the second fan UP if you have the room but a lot of cases aren't taller than 165mm for CPU cooler clearance. If your case lists 170mm then you have up to 37mm DDR4 clearance... also, note that the NH-D15s exists which has one fan in the middle only and slightly shifts the cooler away from the top, x16 slot... if the NH-D15s was $20 cooler I'd recommend it but if the price is closer I'd get the NH-D15 then just use the 2nd fan as a case fan if you don't need the extra cooling.

I've still got my old D14 boxed up. When I moved to a 6700K there were rumours going around about the substrate not being strong enough to withstand big air coolers, so I got a smaller Noctua cooler to be on the safe side. FWIW Noctua fans have a MTBF rate of 150,000 hours and I believe them. That's just over 17 years running 24/7. I'm still using the same NF-P12 case fans I've had for about a decade with no issues at all. I have to clean them every now and then, but that goes for all PC components.

If you need more cooling performance, you could replace the stock fans with newer ones. Noctua itself suggests the NF-P14r redux 1500 PWM (middle) and NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM (front). Both are compatible with the fan clips of the NH-D14 and combined they have around 50m³/h more airflow than the stock fans (at max rpm). Ofcourse they can get louder at max rpm, but they are PWM so you can control them as you see fit ;-)

D14 rules! It is high rise and may have clearance issues in narrow cases. Low profile memory is a bit of a challenge but I manage. It's HARD to clean but works very well when half choked with dust.. Noctua fans do not seem to suffer wear as do most fans. There are 6 Noctua fans in my PC, none younger than 8 years, most older. Periodic cleaning is needed to reduce noise and keep efficiency up. Otherwise completely dependable. I may refit my D14 with new Noctua black turbine CPU fans as they are very groovy looking but it's not needed..

Still rocking this beast cooler and am planning on keeping it when I upgrade in the future. Amazing thing is, you can contact Noctua with a picture and timestamp of your cooler (or receipt if you still have it) and a receipt for a new platform you bought that has a different socket and they will send you mounting brackets FOR FREE. I'm so glad I went with this giant brick instead of an AIO, because that pump would have been dead for sure, but this monster was cooling my 2500K back in 2011, it's cooling my 3770K still and will cool whatever I get in the future, probably more than 1 upgrade as well! Factory seals on heatpipes can go bad if they are not done properly (on cheaper coolers). Chances of air cooler failing on you are way smaller than aio, since they usually don't have that much factors (like pumps, fluids, connection points). I've never had any heatpipe related problem yet, i even had few of them bent and they still worked fine with minimal differences. I did try cutting them and cooler was trash after that (couldn't even handle 65w cpu), so coolers should be handled properly to avoid any damage.

I do find it a bit comical to have a giant fan and GPU on a tiny mATX board. When I bought it at a suggestion of a review, I had no idea what a quality device it was compared to other coolers, until I was considering upgrading it a few years ago. All these newer sexier solutions I was wanting to upgrade to, just didn't seem worth it at all. Eventually a few years later, I did get a water-cooled system for my newest computer, and left the D14 mounted into my older rig due to mounting issues (the same memory spacing issue visible here), but tbh. the D14 properly setup was way better than this current liquid cooled one.

I've got a beaten up old NH-D14 in my rig, I upgraded the fans to the A15 PWM fans from the D15 and Noctua sent me the mounting hardware free of charge dispite the fact that I literally got it from a scrap heap and I was open about that with them lol unrivalled customer service 👍

Bought one of these off ebay for $30 a few years back. Then added some black chromax fans for another $30 so $60 in. Noctua also sent me a free upgrade kit to AM4 which was really cool. Keeps my 3800x at under 75c even in my oven of a gaming room.

I was shocked... i expected it to be within ~4 degrees of the D15. Maybe the older fans are letting it down. D14's are usually pretty close to the 15's(12 degrees hotter is really bad). I bet a 212 EVO/LED wouldn't be much hotter than that D14.

I'm still using my Noctua NH-U12S that I bought in 2015. I first had it on the FX-8350 I had back then and it's currently sitting on a Ryzen 5 2600 keeping it nice and frosty. Noctua coolers can be a bit expensive, but they're definitely worth it considering the high quality and generous amount of hardware they come with.

*NOCTU NH-D14 user Part 2* When I upgraded to an AM4 system I installed the STOCK R9-3900x cooler as I waited for the AM4 adapter from Noctua. I used the Asus DIP5 software in the Asus AI Suite 3 to optimize the CPU performance and fan speed profile. I didn't use PBO or whatever. It did a seemingly great job as it would TEST the voltages at various frequencies. And it found the MINIMUM RPM's to keep the fans going... BUT.. BUT... The damn stock cooler was constantly ramping up and down as well as making an annoying, whiny motor noise. NOTHING I could do would fix this. When I replaced it with the NH-D14 the same thing happened but it was far less obvious... I finally ended up setting the NH-D14 fans to 30% until 60degC which avoids most of the spikes (even at less than 10% usage) while being more or less silent... I also found that the FRONT CASE FANS had rapidly diminishing effectiveness. Anything above 600RPM makes very little different even under heavy load. I ended up putting them to about 300RPM and ramping up at 60degC as well but to a maximum of 600RPM. So the optimal fan config I found not counting my graphics card is for the PSU fan to be completely OFF (ECO MODE) and it never comes on, the front case fans are 300RPM then ramp up between 60degC and 75degC to 600RPM, and finally the CPU fans sit at about 300RPM ramping from 60degC to 75degC to about 700RPM then jumps up to 100% fan speed above 75degC to avoid CPU crashing).

I got a HUGE radial air cooler with one of my AMD boards my buddy traded me into years ago. It had a 120 fan mounted in the middle and the fins were light blue all the way up around the fan. It was dead quiet and cooled that chip much better than the stock coolers did. When I upgraded to the i7980 I tried to use it but didn't have the mount it needed so put it back on the old board. Not sure if I still have it because most of my boxes use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 of one version or another these days. You can buy those dirt cheap on sale or as perfect refurbs these days and they work excellent and are quiet. I'll use anything I can get that is used and cheap or free and works well. I still have a original Stacker tower case holding my win7 box. Quiet, has wheels, and tons of old school room, just no external usb3 ports.

Definitely a greaty cooler. I have two Noctua coolers (NH-C14 and NH-U12S) that I've used for several years without any problems. When I put together my 3900X build a few months ago I opted for another Noctua cooler, the NH-D15 Chromax Black. It also has the slightly cut bottoms to reduce problems with high profile RAM. In addition to being able to adjust the fan placement like on the DH-14 in the video. It also came with the Linus Tech Tips orange highlights(rubber corners) on the fans, which I am using.

Great video mate. Have been using Noctua since 2009, and have never had a fan go on me. The coolers themselves obviously work forever, assuming they are cleaned and maintained with a spray similar to what you used in this video. I did have one fan become a tad noisier (at full speed).. I don't recommend running 3 pin fans flat out all the time. Some motherboards are able to adjust 3 pin fan speeds, using a program like Speedfan. Or Argus Monitor. But yeah.. that fan got relegated to hard drive cage duty (I max it out at 900rpm) and it's still working great. The full speed CPU fans take the most load, so even rotating them around after a few years could be helpful (if you also use noctua for case fans). These days with PWM fans.. the adjustment of their speed is less of an issue. But I also recommend using a fan controller (that can adjust speeds via Windows) over using a preset fan controller that comes with the case. But I guess that is a preference issue. I prefer quiet systems and it also helps that it can reduce the wear and tear on the fans a little bit.

still use it until now..cooled X5680 @4.4Ghz with max temp 70C. and still ok for cooling Ryzen 3600@4.5Ghz. The key to this cooler, is low profile RAM :D

I just got the FREE mounting hardware upgrade kit from Noctua for my D-14 that has been used on an overclocked FX-8350 Black Edition (overclocked to 4.5GHz) since that CPU came out. It is now used on a Ryzen 3600X with zero issues. PWM fans aren't THAT important as my Motherboard supports fan profile tuning via voltage adjustment as well as PWM.

I still use my Noctua NH-C12P SE14 (purchased Oct 2013) on my 3600X based server. Noctua send me a free kit to convert it to AM4, and it is just continue doing its thing. What I really like about the NH-C12P is how it both cools the cpu, but also provides a lot of air to the heatsinks around the cpu socket, while also blowing air over the ram. It might not be needed to cool that too, but for a 24/7 system with limited flow through the case, it is nice when every little bit of that air is used.
