This Off Grid Outdoor Kitchen is Decked Out! Build Series Ep. #4

This week, the outdoor kitchen at the Spur Cabin gets a floor. Sure, it looks a lot like a deck at this point, but by design!
This off grid kitchen will be open air, so the elements will not entirely be kept out. With spaced deck boards, any rain that gets in will easily drain away.
There are lots of tips and tricks to be gleaned from this episode, so be sure to watch every...single...screw! What, untreated wood for decking? Yes! And it'll be just fine!
Thank you for watching @LifeontheMoose !

Glad to hear you are going to put up some sort of walls. Given you penchant for bare chilli, it will provide some amount of civility for others. Some of the older gents here at Fred Moose Lodge will go around without shirts and time has not been overly kind to them. It tends to scare women and confuse babies. Great video, I've been delayed getting to my cabin in the Arapaho National Forest, but I'm sure with your help the deck build will go quickly. I'm using cut down carved teak room dividers between the support posts. Once the carved foliage is painted, it will add to the Bavarian Forest look of the cabin. And, it will give you someone to ask questions of that's actually there.

Hi, Patrick!! The deck is really nice. I'm a little crazy about open spaces (I mean without walls) but as it's an outdoor kitchen, I would build at least 2 half walls with windows to block some rain, snow and wind inside it. Certainly, it wouldn't block all of it, but it would help a bit. And they have something as big windows on them, you could open them during the summer or when the weather is good enough. Once we don't have snow in Brazil, except in very southern states, I have no idea how it works with this weather, but I'm sure you make a better decision about the next steps. Hugs from your Brazilian friend. 😊🖖

35:09 I would recommend the outdoor kitchen be dual purpose (if not more): As a kitchen with a nice island (for that grill and sink maybe) and as a bathing/miniature hot tub area. You could get a used bathtub some place and have it on there if you need it and drag it off into the bushes if you don't... maybe.

1:43 A house I had in San Francisco had this weird rise and valley in the kitchen floor. Not huge but noticeable (I think it was over an inch from side to side). When I went to redo the floor I expected to find some kind of mechanical failure or bug/water damage, something. I pulled all the tile up and then the subflooring and it was nothing but twists, and crowns and valleys caused by the messed up rough sawn lumber lumber the house was built with in 1955. I planed down the high spots. Ended up floating the floor and slate tiling (previous floor was many layers of vinyl tile) so the low spots took care of themselves.

Great question! The short answer…we make it work. My wife and I both want a house here, so she’s supportive of the whole process, even though we have to be apart about a third of the time. We have no “extra” money, and I have zero extra time. I sleep 6 hours a night and work 12-14 hour days a lot. I work full time as a real estate agent on the coast, drive 6 hours one way to our property to video, and do 100% of all production/editing myself. Hopefully I’ll explain further in a video someday soon. And…no deer! I appreciate you asking and watching!🙏

"My side" of the deck was off by a quarter inch because you didn't share that second steak with me. Starve the help and expect a measurable declivity in quality of work. LOL

do you season your cast iron skillet?

Yes! It basically works as a non-stick pan now, with the right fat at a high enough temp.

A couple of wraps of electrical or duct tape around your pencil and you'll never drop it between the deck boards while using it as a splacer...

That’s a good idea. I was going to drill a hole and put a nail through in the beginning, then I forgot!

hey Patrick, where are you located, near what city ??

I would consider the nearest “city” to be either Wenatchee or Spokane. I’m north of them along the Canadian border.

Piece of junk countersink. I'd braze it if it mattered. Stilled worked without the fancy tang. But that's the drink that went with the astronauts to the moon!

Wrong size nails? Why hangers on only one side? Welcome to the keyboard critics of RU-vid!!!!😂 Funny thing is some are curious and wanting to learn, others are anxious to show the world their vast knowledge and experience ( or the extreme lack of!!!!)
