If you get lumber - well, they CALL it "lumber" - from *Home Depot* you have to "take home, and flatten it, joint it, rip it, thickness it, and sand it" and in some cases, just scrap it!! Seriously! Some of that crap is about as useful as fire wood!

Just about everything I've learned about woodworking I've learned using pallet wood and I have always given exactly zero f's what others think. I have a productive shop now filled with benches, cabinets, drawers, jigs and just about anything you can think of all made of free pallet wood. It has been all free and taught me so much. I would advise anyone to get into pallet wood even if to get a new perspective on it.

I did one two-drawer table with just one giant pallet. My work isn’t a ‘hobby’ and I tracked my time. So two things turned out: First, the money I ‘saved’ on ‘free’ lumber took me enough time that when converted to dollars I could have bought clean, fresh lumber for a mere $25- or $30 more. Well worth my time. Second, it turns out that after vacuuming, wire brushing, sanding, then vacuuming again that my $225 glue-joint obviously lost its razor sharp edge within a few cuts. So overall it cost me about $60 extra to use suboptimal wood. Not going to do that again!!!!

Hey Mark I just want to say thank you, between you and Jasper i have learned soooo much and am taking the first step in just getting started. I've already started collecting and breaking down pallets. I have watched just about all of your videos and many of which i have watched over and over again. I love all the work you do with pallets and i honestly love seeing you mess up on projects. It helped me realized how its okay to mess up on projects and has helped me realize that i can work on my own projects as well. I just glued up my first small slab this weekend about 1 3/4" thick. Need to make a few adjustments but it was very satisfying to do. So thank you for everything you do and hopefully here soon ill be starting a channel as well showing off some of the unique ideas i have for pallet projects.

Thank you for making me feel, "normal." I just recently started my woodworking journey, and all I can swing, right now is pallet wood. You're 100 % correct that it's WAY too easy to let the sensationalized elitism of some social media presences, make you feel bad or "less than" by using pallets. I'm doing it wrong. I love pine wood and pallets. But even more exotic pallet wood or "just" wood. And, instead of soon moving to a big farm from 1770 with a huge and isolated workshop the former owner, a pro woodworker with 2-3 full-time employees, built by and for himself, which my amazing neighbors just have bought, up north, on a 45 square miles big windy island in the middle of the ocean, I should have won the lottery and bought a farm for us in a more sunny place, where it's easier to find pallets, and certainly more exotic wood (than pine). Fx. on a slightly bigger island, 3 MIO square miles, down south! Another bummer. Even the smaller island only is only 7 hours in a car and 90 minutes on a ferry away, it costs me a fortune to move almost all my things up there. Almost, because I'll have to leave 99,9 percent of all the (free) pallet wood and all other pieces of (free) wood, incl. several solid tabletops, I've collected over the last 4-5 years for future woodworking projects. The last 0,1 percent I've planned to hide in boxes under my books, clothes, etc, and take with me! But, luckily, I'm moving up there in less than 2 months, 3 months before my neighbors are coming, and I'll try to find some good spots to place my new pallet and other (free) wood I hope I'll be able to find there. And pine will be fine. When Jesper can make amazing things of pallets found here, I too can try and eventually make a few things I like, and I can use in my private rooms ... Down under, I failed this time, and with a spine, I've broken, little by little, by lifting too much and in the worst way over the last 40 + years, I might not come to Australia to improve my woodworking skills, even if I win the lottery, but perhaps in my next life, if I'm born as a free human ... And I can and will also use the inspiration I've found in a few, but very talented, very creative Australian woodworkers videos. And I just realized, I DID win the lottery!! More than once. In fact, many times!! And some HUGE prizes! The biggest ones of all. First of all, I had the most amazing family, parents and siblings, sadly all gone by now. And I have an amazing daughter, and 3 amazing kids from my siblings. AND, within the last 6 months, my neighbors decided to make their dream come true 10 years sooner than planned, and buy a farm on this island with enough space also for me and my cats, when they were told I had to move. And 2 other neighbors have tried to buy the house I live in, and have rented for almost 13 years, but because the owner now is forced to sell and I to move, because they also didn't want me to move away... But the owner of "my" house has sat the price WAY to high for them, because she bought it in 2008, a few months before everything changed, and houses overnight only were worth half or less... And therefore, Læsø, (Laesoe) here we come! (PS: Save a few pallets for me!) From a very thankful sub, who can't wait to unpack all my woodworking tools and make some shop furniture, as the shop is empty, and even the dust collector is gone ... But that's fine. More than fine. It's PERFECT!! Everything is PERFECT (once I'm done packing!!) All my best wishes to all of you! ❤❤❤ /Pia

Love your videos! Will say though, recycling wood (not pallets but reclaimed and such) has many times cost me more than purchased wood in saw, bandsaw, planer and jointer blade from hitting the nails and junk the metal detector miss! As a note, heavily rusted, 100+ year old nails don’t set off many metal detectors but toast blades

Did just that, I got started...! Collected pallets, started to break them down, it's tough at first as each new step is just that, new, never done by you before. Pallet buster makes it so much easier, and while I had a table saw, the thicknesser was a welcome birthday present. Latest addition was a cyclone dust extractor I made, and I'm into the first hall table. I have other things in my head to make, and I see new projects in every day settings. But the focus it to make and sell, aim to cover my costs, then carry on. Thanks for the motivation 👍

Another enjoyable and informative video, Mark. I especially enjoy #10, the problem solving. I try to remember it when I a project frustrates me. By the way, my Mrs. is coming around to the palletwood aesthetic. She'd been skeptical for a while but after I made a computer monitor shelf for my desk, a shoe storage/bench for the mud room and a raised dog bowl holder, she actually requested a window table for her indoor herb garden. Anyway, thanks as usual for the great content and keep well.

Pro tip: if you don't want to endanger your router/jointer/etc. blades with bits of stone and metal buried in the wood (7:35), pre-process each face with a demo blade in a circular saw set in your router sled. Once you've seen that a particular face is clear, you can process it further with confidence. ...or spend a lot of time regrinding/replacing your bits and blades. You do you. :shrug:

Marvelous piece, Mark! Having the end trays in the "top", allows you to use it in either configuration. Some will like the live edge as the bottom, and some will like the live edge as the top. always give the people options. I know it's for your personal use, but now you have the option to change the look and still have the function! Keep on "Doing You" and let the haters take a long walk off a short pier(jetty)!

I love watching woodworking... creation of new items, restoration of old items, modern twists on pieces, even woodturning into bowls and vases, etc. I loved woodshop in 8th grade (I'm a woman, btw) and am just at the time in my life when I may be able to start playing with working on projects myself. I've done a few minor things over the years, but now that I'm just about done raising my family, I may carve out a workshop in our shed and see what I can do. ;) Thanks for the great idea of starting with free wood and all the reasons I should.

You have no idea! I recently started my journey. Where’s my life is at this moment, I was breaking down to my fiancée. Lost and overwhelmed with myself. I was explaining to her how everything I am doing is so over saturated and it seems like there’s no point at times. I just gotta do me! Forget about Brian making the super resin epoxy table out of driftwood, forget John killing it with his artwork and tattoo talent, forget about all of the music artists of today. We all hold value in all we do somewhere! Just do you! I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow and get after it and forget the noise in my brain, just do me and spend time with my daughter while I finish my workbench up💪🏼 cheers for the words that weren’t necessary to come out of your mouth in this video but did more for me than you know brotha!!❤️‍🔥

Love the video, as always! But mate, when you were handling those tiny pieces on your flippy-uppy router - it sent shivers down my spine. That looked a lot like the finger eater 3000. Be safe!

Cheers mate. I don’t think I could have made the router clip anymore slow and deliberate. Fingers well clear and positive hand over from push to pull etc. video may have made it look sketchy. But it isn’t 🫡

Stumbled on your videos about a month ago mate. No idea how they came up, I've never done wood working in my life. Have been looking for a hobby other than video games and thought I'd just get started. I built my work bench out of pallets, then on to a mallet, hot wheels track for the lad, and now I'm making my second bench for the thickneser i just purchased. It's been such an amazing adventure so far, and i'm learning something new every day. and fuck me it really does, feel good in here.

One of the first videos I saw was Jasper Makes, which after a few videos led me to you. I started woodworking about 8 to 9 months ago and it was the two of you that made me start my whole woodworking journey using pallet wood. Thank you for showing me an easy way to get wood without paying for it, if it wasn't for that tidbit of information I wouldn't have been able to build the things I have due to the lack of funds to buy wood. I do however, use a mixture of pallet wood and store bought wood for my projects but it's nice to know that if I don't have the money to buy it then I can still create with pallet wood that I might not be able to purchase. Like you said, you do you! I also hope to be on RU-vid soon! I still have to figure out how to get good sound and I can't use my phone because it's full and would take days if not weeks to clear off to use, maybe eventually. I'm also waiting on a laptop that's being given to me but I'm so close to being online! You guys are amazing and I just wanted to say thank you for showing me a viable way to keep doing what I love! Stay safe and Happy Building 💯😁

Ive been saving pallets for years using them only sparingly while trying to find direction on how to utilize them to the best. Your videos have been truly inspiring for me. Ive made a few pieces over the years but have always felt over my head. I always seem to over complicate things, your videos bring me back down to the simplification of it all. I love your videos mate!!!!

Seeing the amount of glue ups you obviously do, you may consider a glue roller, they come with a built in refillable glue caddy. Save time and glue.

Does the free slab have nails?… Love ya work!
@Joseph-bk3hb
@Joseph-bk3hb 3 месяца назад
Small tip. Could be helpful if it suits you. When using the pneumatic denailer (I use the same one you have) I use a bucket to catch nails too and I find it useful to have it partially filled with water so the nails don't hit the other nails or debris and bounce back out. Water slows the down enough to stay in the bucket.

How to you prevent glue being present glue showing on the surface of a slab and having it affect the any protective coating and the final aesthetic?
@dainermade

all glue is sanded or planed away. I avoid getting glue around joints by using blue tape etc.
