This Old Trick Made My AOD HIT LIke Whoa...TIPS OF THE TRADE! 

A quick way I adjusted my 91' aod TV cable was removing the intake tube, removing it from the throttle linkage and pressing down the white clip to allow the block/adjuster to slide, have someone sit in the car and floor the throttle to WOT, then pull the cable forward with one hand as far as it will go and slide the block/adjuster back until it is aligned with the throttle linkage hole and press it in. That is the max pressure setting before it starts limiting how far you can open up the throttle body. A hirev transgo governor would greatly help also. I have the transgo AOD HP kit with the 5500 rpm governor and the shift points are farther apart (much longer between 2nd and 3rd during normal driving in D position) so it does not shift into third so early, especially when you are running 3.73's or higher. I am running 3.73's now. The transgo kit even comes with a 5900 rpm governor and a I believe the 6100 rpm one is the highest.

Aod in my 94 gt and learned the tv cable adjustment and the shuffle actually this morning and it shifts awesome with a shift kit it hits second hard

Glad y’all got it shifting SO much better ! I’m sure they appreciate that a TON !!! Used to do the AOD shuffle all the time back in the day. Most of my Foxes were stick cars, but I wound up with a slush box 92 back in 94. Started adding go fast goodies and a blower but was always disappointed with the trans until writing a check to Lentech for a built AOD. Then it was a crazy consistent 11.2 car all day long.

Also I think he should look into upgrading the valve body in that transmission it was a weak point in the old 90s AOD transmissions they rode the clutch too long 1. they eat up your clutch and gears overtime 2 they reduce your track times because it’s taking too long to shift. My dad did his and I just did mine still have to install it though. I can tell you in my dad’s fox body it’s a world of difference it properly slams it into gear without riding the clutch and it feels waaayyyy faster. Also I can recommend that you can take the gears from an AODE it has heavier gears and install them in your AOD to make it tougher

So wish I had this kind of info 15-20 years ago when I had my '86 GT AOD, would have been golden! On a side note, best part of the vid is when you first get in to cousin Paul's car and you're like, right Cousin Paul's driving and you immediately grab the seat belt, lmao,. Such an awesome vid man, the looks on yours and cousin Paul's faces when that hits is priceless. I know we say it a lot as car folks but these types of reactions are what we all live for!

From the factory the AOD TV cable is set at what you could call similar to "zero lash" like when adjusting a rocker. Meaning no "pre-load" or slack. Meaning there should not be any tension or any slack... just enough to keep it somewhat taught. If you mess with it too much youre gonna burn up your clutches. And no the TV cable has little to do with WOT shift points. There is a governer and valve in the tailshaft of the AOD. It looks like a nipple and they come with different bore sizes. In my truck for example stock is usually 4600... I put in a 5500+. You can buy the valves / springs from Trans GO. Put the valve you want in and leave the TV cable at its factory setting.

Yeah, it's a year old, but I love this vid. Brings back so many memories of my 88 GT.

Tell Paul the new TV cables they make are great too. They eliminated that grommet at the throttle body and are connected in a way that makes it impossible to fail. Easier to adjust as well. My daughter has the shuffle down pretty well. On the 1-2 shift, you don’t even have to wait for it to shift into second. Just up and back real quick, and it will go into second. My kid kept waiting for it to shift inTo 2nd and she couldn’t get it until she did it quick like. I’m excited to see Paul and Ms. Sandy’s progress. We did the draggy in Bells car and it went a 15.95. Bone stock minus exhaust.

The aod shuffle is a great trick and is fun but I don’t recommend doing it a lot! You’ll burn up your overdrive band lol ask me how I know… went through 3 transmissions

I had a 92 5.0 lx aod loved it got it when I was 18 I drove the heck out of it hit it into a tree in a parking lot showing off then my Trans went out my uncle worked on transmission told me I could use a aod out of my friends 94 cougar 3.8 it worked and with the v6 converter it worked to get it around I hated to get rid had kids and it needed work .if I had you and brew I would have still had and it would had been better . Proper way ,is to use a vacuum gauge to the tranny to set the tv cable

Go to your Ford dealer and get the brass replacement bushing for the TV cable. Used to be a recall issue from Ford back in the day, removes the slop.

The gauge does work as a starting point.I did the same thing the first time add tension on the cable. Some transmission wants more pressure depends on how wore out it is

The aod shuffle woke that car up a lot!

I always ran all my AOD cars and trucks with the TV cable two clicks tighter than neutral. This especially helps with the trucks. Manual shifting is the way to go for drag racing. A shift kit can help too. An AOD shouldn't shift at all from third to fourth at wot. If it does then the TV cable is too loose or theres a valve body issue.

Knowing the FIOD/AOD Transmission and how it was designed, playing with the Throttle Valve cable is NOT the way to make an AOD shift later for racing. The governor in the extension housing is the way to do it while racing in Drive or OverDrive. Using the AOD with the TV cable too loose burns clutch packs and to tight breaks the intermediate one-way roller clutch and the direct shaft. The AOD’s kickdown rod or TV Cable is meant for setup of the throttle valves fluid pressure from idle to WOT only for daily driving! Modifying the Governor is the best way to get higher RPM Shifts based on output shaft speed and Kickdown Rod or TV Cable Input. The AOD shuffle is really the only way to make the AOD shift at the point of 5,500-6,500 where needed for racing! BE AWARE though, doing the AOD Shuffle breaks the Low/Reverse One-Way Roller Clutch, the Intermediate One-Way Roller Clutch and the stock Direct Drive Shaft a lot easier. This is due to much higher RPM Shifts under high load and these parts are the common failure point of the AOD. ESPECIALLY, if the Transmission is abused for racing!!! All this in mind the AOD is not meant for racing in any way, the Ford C6 or if Electronic is your choice the C6’s polished cousin the E4OD with some of its cousin’s parts from the 4R100 is the way to go for racing. Both the E4OD and its revision the 4R100 are a much stronger Transmission than the FIOD/AOD or AODE/4R7xx Transmissions would ever be! That being said the E4OD requires a bit of transmission tunnel work to be done and a customer transmission crossmember just for it to fit and a shorter driveshaft to also be installed!

It's always exciting when you can drop your ET just with some simple adjustments that's basically the heart of tuning at its core right there you know.. it's good you covered this cuz a lot of mustangs have a aods and you are kind of like a great reference for Ford information neo I have a 94 5.0 5 speed that and my 1960 F100 short bed with a 390 years ago full Street trim ran 13.50s with the AC belt street tires air cleaner in 2013 I got a little trouble with the law had to sell my drag race car which had a high winding 393 wíth 833 Mopar hemi shift 4spd with the input shaft shortened & a Ford adapter plate I still have the motor and transmission so probably going to start hitting it with the mustang last week I seen your Ford explorer throttle body thing I had completely forgotten about that I'm going to jump on that one next weekend.... keep them vids coming neo?

Ive been doing the AOD shuffle since 96. Beat a bunch of my buddies manuals. If I just let it shift id lose by cars. People tell me Autos are slow which tells me they didnt know this.

This is a great video. My Ranger I am using the AOD that came with the 5.0 as I am doing it a relative budget build and a manual is just too expensive for what I want to spend.

Transgo used to offer a governer kit to up shift points. It's discontinued but can still be had online. Comes with a few different valves to choose from. I have the 5900 kit in mine but with 4.10s it shifts about 5600 wot in d. Much better and safer for the aod. You can drill out the valve to lighten it up and up the shift points as well. Just have to pull tailshaft and take off the governer to get to it.

Can you run a HCI setup maybe an intake and heads only setup with a stock computer? Really clean AOD vert in my area that’s all stock minus suspension and wheels. Daily driver clean.

I have a 1990 Fox 25th anniversary... You ought to see me do that shift shuffle... But mine has to be above 25 miles an hour ... I have the AODE. And I believe on my model 89 and a 1/2 and 1990 25th anniversary cars the 1st year of airbags... And I hear that's when they installed a little on the ECU..Celluloid 4200 RPMFor shifts when it's in drive... When I'm flat footed... Unless it kicks into passing gear... Or I manually shift It... But I'm going to have to adjust around the 4200 RPM illinoid on ECU.. I've got a video of a stock motor stock Turk converter everything in transmission.. And I can burn 1st and 2nd pretty good in that automatic I got... I got a video on RU-vid I can lock 3rd 2

i had an 83 GT with 5.0 and Gt40Ps and a E303 with an AOD i used to shift it the same way, worked great. the AOD had the hardened 1 piece input shaft, and shift kit. it was the only AOD fox i ever owned and i cruised it in the very first Woodward dream cruise in 1996. it did great burnouts lol

i added a electric shift kit to my 96/97 F150, it was like 70 bucks in 2000 and man did it make a differenc. it had stock, street and strip modes and you didnt want it in strip mode if you had a neck injury, thats how firm the shifts were can you still buy those?

Mine shifts early being easy on it how can i change that Goes into overdrive at like 35mph 95 aode

13.9 in a stock AOD is pretty dang good. Since you can't put a cam in it, will you do a rocker/ springs or GT40 head upgrade?

Have question stock 1986 fox 5.0 spark plug thread 13mm. So how compression test done there's no kit with 13mm adapter.
