Based on my experience with our '21 Silverado, I would say the quality of the end product is not worth the asking price. It's a shame because they did a lot of good things in the redesign on the T1-based vehicles, but it seems they are engineered to last the length of the warranty and no longer. Also, if you get the L84 5.3 or L87 6.2 V8, I strongly recommend disabling DFM by driving in "L9" (on the 10-speed) or "L7" (on the 8-speed). Disabling the system makes the drivability way better and greatly reduces the likelihood of lifter failure. I've only noted a 1 MPG loss in fuel economy with the 5.3 since these have a mild 3.23 final drive. That would make for a good TFL MPG loop video: driving in "D" vs. "L9" on this Yukon AT4 6.2.
@jonesjones7057
@jonesjones7057 2 года назад
Exactly. I can't believe this issue isn't brought up in every review. Seems odd to me but maybe that's just me. Reviewers talk trash about CVTs in any car they drive that has one but somehow DFM is off limits. Makes me wonder..
@voided3
@voided3 2 года назад
@@jonesjones7057 It's definitely an issue, and it isn't unique to GM as other auto makers also build engines with cylinder deactivation. I would think a change in the ECU tune would be enough to regain the 1 MPG DFM adds without the added mechanical complexity of the system. If the lifters in our truck had failed out of warranty, it would easily have been a $5,000+ repair, too.

I haven’t owned a Chevy for a while now. I have considered their pickups lately, just due to the price!! The 2021s were priced very well, but several of my friends have a 19 or newer. 6 out of 8 have had no issues at all and 2 drive the crap out of their trucks. 2, though, have had nightmarish experience with theirs. Both are 5.3. One 2019 RST, the other has a 2020 Trail Boss. They have both been stranded more than once resulting in several trips to the dealership, some behind/on top of a tow truck. They have payments and can’t wait to get their trucks paid off to get rid of them. I have tried to convince them to get out now and get what they can. They are not in the position to pay more, so they are kinda stuck. I think I have a solution for each of them, it will cost me some $$, but they are good friends. It will be a Christmas gift for them. My buddy has 2 F150s similarly optioned with the 2.7 and Pro Power onboard. Both SuperCrew XLT 4x4s. I will pay the difference to get them to basically the same position they are in now, but with new trucks. There are a lot of us with 2017 or newer F150s, most are Hybrids, and we have been problem free other than a few recalls. Routine maintenance is very inexpensive. They find out about this on Saturday when I take them out for a steak dinner I owe each of them. (Football bet) I will be driving one of the F150s when I pick them up. My buddy owns the dealership and through myself & my businesses, (I have bought over 100 F150s from his dealership since 1998), so I get a bit of leeway. I think they will jump for the deal, but be very shy in doing so. I hope they do. I just love the Trail Boss,,,,,,, I’m tempted to roll the dice on it for an off-road toy, but I already have a Bronco Badlands. I just love these AT4 Yukon’s, but a 6.2 is over $95,000 Canadian!! They can reach $100K!!! I agree, they are asking too much, especially if you are looking at keeping it past warranty.
@voided3

@@shitloveaduck Yeah, our '21 Silverado is perfect on paper and was priced well, but it's had a ton of issues (lifter failure at 585 miles, bed misalignment, a rear vent that didn't work, incorrectly installed trim pieces, needed a new serpentine belt and idler pulley at 6300 miles, a litany of squeaks/rattles/clunks, etc.). I'm looking at an F150 with the 2.7 as a possible replacement down the road.

Yeah GM quality is garbage. Resale also reflects that. DFM/AFM is a really bad idea and always will be. As far as the 8 speed goes is a defective piece of crap that GM keeps doubling down on. They should just admit it will never be reliable enough and quit making it. I would go with Dodge with their zf 8 speed or with Ford. If you want something that hold up get a tundra. GM is in last place IMO.

I think the Volt's hybrid system would be good for this, a lot more space, use a smaller battery for maybe 10 miles of all electric range, use the electric motors to do most the work with the diesel mainly acting as a generator, the 3.0 diesel actually weighs less than the 6.2, that doesn't include the emissions system, but that's really just an extra tank and heavier cats (DPF). It won't increase the hwy mpg, but it should increase the city to almost what the hwy mpg is now.

As an owner of one of these, the shifter is easy to get used to. For the 99% use case of these vehicles, you'll only ever shift from park to drive and vice versa, so it impacts actual driving very little. Plus for that use case, I think the extra space gained is totally worth any inconvenience from the button shifter. I could see it being an annoying shifter for off-roading though where you might want to shift between first and 2nd more frequently. That or if you really like engine braking, then it will be really annoying.

GM never had strong half ton transmissions. This goes back to the 1980s with the 700R4 / 4L60 non-E, to the 1990s with the electronically controlled 4L60e. The 700R4 base was used GM RWD cars and half tons from the early 1980s to like 2010. The 6L80 6 speed introduced in the 2009 model year for GM full size trucks was a decent transmission though. I so want to own a Yukon/Suburban/Tahoe!! I’ll stick with my ‘21 Highlander for now! I’ve been looking around for a used one but with these crazy prices for new and used, I will wait for a better time 😋

I always like the Yukon/Tahoe...until I see the price. It's just not worth a luxury SUV price, if they trimmed 5-10k scross the whole lineup they'd be an easy recommend. You're better off going with a Traverse if you want the 3rd row and a truck to tow. Hell at that price you can damn near get a Traverse AND Silverado.

I like it, a lot. Would probably choose all black exterior first choice, then white as the second choice, and tint the glass more, but I agree this deep grey does look sharp. I am a little torn at this point as to whether I'd get the 5.3 or the 6.2 engine, but that 6.2 sounds pretty darn nice to have. A question: Someone told me that the 2022 Yukon AT4, at least the high end Premier Plus which is what I would want, comes with a 2" lift in the rear, so raises the rear to a permanent base height from 8" to 10", and then with the air suspension, it can be raised up to 2" more if in 4WLow. I was also told I could get a 2" spacer above the front shocks to level the entire thing at base height at the higher 10" clearance, and then with the air suspension, increase the total height to either 11" or 12" depending. Is that your understanding? Can you explain at all? Apparently the Yukon Denali does not come with that extra 2" lift, and it cannot be added if you get the adjustable air suspension on it. I ask because another person told me initially that the AT4 and Denali were the same, both at a base 8" height, and both could be raised with the air suspension up to a maximum of 10". Having that extra 2" front and rear on the Yukon AT4 before the adjustable air suspension would be big for me, I would love it, but I'm hearing two different things. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Either way, another great review. Thumbs up!

I think the 2022 Sierra and Silverado have a better looking interior than Yukon or Tahoe. Also GM should have given the SUV's a different look, they just look like a Truck with a full cab. Also this giant needs a hybrid option before that thirsty 6.2 A diesel hybrid would be much better.

I would agree with Ed Ricco the DFM is a detriment. I presently own a 2021 AT4 with the 5.3 and it lost a lifter. I feel its better to have all cylinders firing instead of letting them randomly shut off and on. Personally I would also prefer a 3.31 rear end ratio. The 3.23 is too high causing the unit to downshift and upshift going up hill. I am trading for a 2022 with a 6.2 motor. I would also like GM to get rid of the chrome inside of the cabin. The sun reflects off it going down the road.

Longer engine (straight 6) plus big intercooler in front of the radiator with a smaller front bumper for off-road clearance means there genuinely may not be enough room for it.

I love the new Yukon and Tahoe but I wonder why there is no center seat headrest in the second (bench option) and third row. It is quite important safety issue and if you make a car for 7/8 adults make at least retractable headrests for center seats.

is this the 10.2" infotainment screen? i snagged one being built that has the 13.4" gmc premium infotainment listed on the build sheet. looking around i only see that listed on the AT4X pickup.... typo or a new thing? the build i'm trying to get is the 6.2L with trailering package and a few stand-alone options like pano roof, side steps so i'm interested to see which screen it actually has... being built sometime this month hopefully. weird.
