That's because it might have been 2 years ago to me, but I know it was likely today for you. What matters is when YOU see it and need my help, not when I decide to post it. I'm here for you and my community when you need me. Hope you check out and enjoy my other videos as well! 👊👍😀
Hey thanks! You make a lot of interesting points in many of your videos about the mistakes one can make while writing a resume. Right before I watched your video, I was actually told to create a table listing my skills, and the first time i took a resume writing class I was instructed to include an objective. Some may say there are many ways to write a resume. But after watching your videos, I can confidently say that you know exactly what you're talking about. Quite refreshing- often times when i'm given resume advice, I question if it's correct and I feel quite lost. But with you I no longer have to feel doubt. Thanks for the piece of mind your confidence and competency brings.
Hello Andrew, Your information is very helpful. I am in an odd position. I was a stay at home mother for 30 years, raising three children. I recently attended college and pursued an Associate's Degree in Business Technology and a Diploma in Medical Office Assistant. I have applied to 28 positions since graduation in December last year. The only work experience I have is in daycare as a preschool teacher over the last 2 years. I have only been called to one interview. It is so difficult to get my resume out there in person for having to apply online to each and every job opportunity.
I graduated last year as a management degree major i have to be honest i was a bit lazy to work on my resume before , and due to some illness i was not able to focus on my post graduate career opportunities that prevented me to work on my resume. now that i 'm better i'm looking videos and i came across your videos , i have no working experience in my major i never secured an internship before i don"t know how to start my resume , i want to secure a interview so an employer can my resume ,im Glad to have watched your videos i have hope i will advance my future opportunities and land a job.
Hey, I hope you were able to land that interview! It’s okay that you don’t have work experiences in your major. Leverage your past experiences and target your bullet points to show that you have the skills that are *required* in that job that you want. I had no experience in consulting and managed to still get my job. I was a babysitter before that! But I leveraged my experience as a babysitter to show that I was good at problem solving. Hope this helps! 😊
Hi Andrew..thx a ton. Your videos have really opened my eyes to what I have been doing wrong with my resume. I saw a video you did about career changes. It was great help because I have just completed my MBA and seeking a career change. However, I am a bit confused about what I should put on my career profile in this case. Should I talk about the skills I have gained in the past? It would be great if you could do a video on that. Thanks.
Arjun, when changing careers, first identify the capabilities and skills required to do that career/job. Once you have those, then highlight those in your career profile of your resume. If you are a student, this is expected. As you become a more seasoned professional, it's becomes a little more tricky but still very doable!
I've heard some say to omit an objective statement, others say to keep it. I don't think there's a clear cut answer, or that there's anything wrong with saying what you're looking for. A job is a two-way street.
Hey there. A job is definitely a 2-way street! My suggestion is to use the resume as a marketing document of what you offer. You're not there to explain your wants (typically) when someone first reviews your resume. So, give them all you offer and save sharing what you want and need for the live discussions. You can always articulate it then.
You give great information, thank you! A video that would help even more is one that tells us of what NOT to do! You could show us bad resumes and templates that you've seen which made you move on to the next. Just a thought!
Hi Andrew! Thanks for all the cool videos. Question: would you recommend having a "career highlights" section on a college resume? I'm about to graduate in 3 months so applying for full time, but I only have one real internship along with some clubs. Thank you!
Hi! Your videos and webinars have been a huge help to me! A question I do have though is do I need to list my high school under education or will just my B.S. suffice?
Yogesh! thanks for watching and thanks for commenting. I'm actually going to be doing that video soon, but fortunately in the meantime you can find out how i would answer that in this video. watch the entire video and the answer to the tell me about yourself question is at the end. milewalk.com/mwblog/the-number-1-reason-why-you-did-not-get-hired/
This is great. However, I do not know if others have said this. You said the summary should have 4 items but you only provided 3. 1. School 2. Work Experience 3. Extra Curricular and 4????. I've watched the video several times and I must be missing something.
Awesome 4 Key Concepts for College reference!! Love it!! Currently working on first draft and the Evaluation form for our Group is much Different from your Awesome changes!! Hi Andrew, I'm a new binge watcher of your videos :) I'm a civil engineer with 2 years of CAD drafting experience looking for work in New Zealand . However I'm unable to get even a single interview call and it's been 2 months since I have finished a 1 year construction diploma program and sitting at home.. I'm really worried about my situation... could you please give me any suggestions? Thanks a lot.
Hi Winnie, sorry to hear about your trouble getting the interviews! My initial reaction is to check out this video and use the tools I mention: 3 FREE TOOLS FOR YOUR RESUME TO BEAT THE ATS: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jxtCWsurrSE.html
Thanks for the great video Andrew. One question: what is your opinion on those fancy looking resume templates? For example the ones with personal info on the left with colorful background and pretty icons?
Can you make more videos to assist college graduates or people who are still entry-level in the workforce? (less than 5 years of professional experience)
Hey! I hate to plug in my own info, but I made a video on the same resume format I used for my entry level job. I used both my part times and my internship (I only had one) and I still managed to get my job! It’s all about using your previous experience to show that you developed the skills demanded in the area you want. For example, I wanted to go into business consulting so I used my babysitting job to show that I had problem solving skills. Hope this helps, and good luck!
hi,great videos!! I have one question: I just graduated with a master degree and have nearly one year work experience as digital media editor before I entered postgraduate study. Should I write career profile or personal profile in college type? and how to write the first paragraph if without strong numbers to demonstrate working abilities? my experience is mainly about digital media contents production such as articles, audio and videos including some editing work and social media platform management work
Hi Andy, if ever since my University (3 years ago) I was an inventor\ entrepreneur and founder of products and companies (have no experience as an employee) and now I am trying to get hired for a job as an employee, is it good or is it bad for my resume? how can it serve me for the best?
If I want to get a job at a particular company do you think it's worth my time to visit the company before they've processed my application? A lot of the places I want to apply to would take 40 - 70 minutes for me to get there, but I'm wondering if I could get a lasting impression by going to talk to them first. If it's an alright idea is there a particular approach I should take to help convey my interest without coming off as desperate? I'm a computer science undergrad if that helps at all.
Thaddeus, first of all, thanks for watching the video and thanks too for your question. I get this one quite a bit. Candidly, I'm not a huge fan of visiting the company to SPEAK with someone. In today's marketplace, employers and their employees are so busy they would never take the time to speak with someone who drops in. They really wouldn't. Most of them can't even pick up the phone if they aren't expecting the call. If you want to check the place out to test the commute, see the office, etc. then I think it's an excellent idea. Lastly, if you are a computer science undergrad, you are very well positioned with that degree to enter the market. If you want some additional coaching, I have a live coaching session on wednesday march 4th. you can jump in on this if you're available: www.milewalkacademy.com/p/andrew-lacivita-career-coachcast-march-2017-free-offer. I also have loads of FREE goodies for college students on my blog. You can access that here: milewalk.com/mwblog/. Lastly, I'd definitely check out the resume videos for professionals and college students. Those are on my blog and RU-vid channel.
Thank you for such a quick reply! I'll look at the resources you've provided and see if I have the time to spare. I'm glad that you've been putting out videos like these, since there seems to be a lot of confusing and misleading information online about job acquisition.
Yes. Head to the video this one trick will make yourself college resume stand out. That is a template suited for recent college graduates. That’s the one you want. The link is in the video description.
is there a difference between career profile and career highlights sections? and is it essential to have both to build a great resume? Speaking as a student with only a couple of jobs and various volunteering efforts as my experience other than my education!! Thanks so much for the amazing videos :)
Hello Andrew. Thank you for your videos. I have question: Should you cater each resume to each new job you are applying to (like your cover letter) or can you leave it as is and use the same resume for each job? Second, at the top of my resume I have a summary of qualifications section. Should I remove that? Thanks!
Ali, have one base resume and tweak it as needed. I recommend running your resume through jobscan with the particular job description: www.jobscan.co/andrew-lacivita. If you're a college student (a la this video), you can keep the quals if they're very specific. Otherwise, use the pro format if you've been in the workforce a bit.
I assume you mean the collegiate template. It’s emailed separately. Please check you spam or jump I folder. If it’s not there, please click the link again and put in your info. If you don’t get the email, send apps a message to support(at)milewalk.com!
for the extra curricular section, should I mention that I was part of a poetry magazine? What about activities like band? These seem arbitrary on a resume.
Hi Andrew, odd question. I'm a recent collage grad. When is it appropriate to add CPR and First Aid certifications to my resume? I've heard I always should and I never should.
Andrew, I have been following your videos and materials and they are awesome! Thank you very much. My situation is a little bit different and I´m lost. I´m a construction Project manager with over 15 years of experience and I left my country (Brazil) to start over in Canada. To do so, I needed to go back to school and I´m studying in a college in my field where I can only work part time. I´m feeling that this student status has been a barrier to get a job as a project manager, even with my experience. What would you suggest me? Keep the professional resume or make one that is a combination of the professional and the student resume? Thank you
Hey Fernando, I would suggest leaning more heavily on your professional resume. Employers appreciate the experience more than the education even if it was in a different country. You can also blend it by putting your career profile up top then highlights then education then work experience. Either way should be okay!!!
Hey Fernando, you're welcome. Did you mean you weren't sure regarding which next step to take? If that's the case, please clarify your question and I'll be happy to respond again. I was responding to your last question regarding whether you should use a professional resume design or the one I put out for college students. Just let me know and I can clarify!
Andrew, I came to Canada to start over and my plans are to keep going with my Construction Project Manager career..There is a huge market here in Vancouver for professionals with my profile. However, in order to get visa approvals, I needed to study and I´ve chosen Construction Management at the best college in Canada. I thought just like you that my experience would be more important than Education at this time, even working only part-time. For me, education would be the means to stay in the country legally, learn all buildings codes and legislation of the market here and all this together would be a perfect combination to get a job. However, it´s not working this way. All the applications that I´ve sent I had no returns, even with cover letters and resumes tailored to the job descriptions, and adapted to Canadian style and to job descriptions where I could fit. I´ve even tried entry levels positions which mean, situations where I would be overqualified and nothing happened. I think that for being a student and be allowed to work only part-time, the companies are not considering my resume, nevertheless, they are looking for professionals with my profile. My question about which kind of resume I should use was to be sure if I should change my resume strategy or not. It seems that I will really have a chance only after graduation and not now as I would like to. I´sorry for the long text.
Hi Sir I would like to say that your advice are really good. I'm going to apply for a Data Analyst job this May. and I would like to say thank you in advance.
i'm applying to an undergraduate business degree and i'm thinking of submitting a file of a project i've allready started (but couldn't complette it) ;it was a robot that cleans the floor (we made a business plan and we started getting to the technical part) should i do that?
Hello Andrew, I am a recent graduate and have some work experience under my belt. However, my question is what can I add in core competencies? I am a software tester and have knowledge about programming languages and different softwares. Can I add them as my core competencies? Your help will greatly be appreciated. Thank You.
Hi Andrew, I'm a fan of getting yourself in the door any way you can, but I would start with a cold email first. If you can find the hiring manager's phone number, you can likely find his or her email address. If you do, try this video/article/sample cover letter I put together for just such an occasion. Here's a link to the article on my blog and you can also find it on youtube. milewalk.com/mwblog/how-to-boss-hunt-with-a-cover-letter-that-makes-hearts-melt/ Hope that helps buddy!
Hello Andrew, I watched your resume video for professional and now this. But in this video, you did not mention about not putting a laundry list of skills. So do you think it is a good idea to put it in a college resume? Thanks!
Andrew if I got a job I'll send you a gift😉😇 I'll try your tips...btw I have a question; can I apply for jobs that ask for 1-2 years experience if I have none or it is just a waste of time?
Hi can you show me how to write one when you have not worked. I have started college and in high school my parents wanted me to keep up all A's I did but now how can I show a company experience I don't have? Thank you.
Hi, This is Resham Gautam, currently applying for the job in actuarial field. I have my higher education from Nepal and I came to India for my graduation and further study. I have one year education gap before graduation because admission for the graduation in India started before the declaration of higher education result 2015 in Nepal, which were delayed due to the earthquake. So should I mention a reason for education gap in the resume?
Hello, I am currently in high school but I am looking for a resume template. Do you have one that is professional and appealing to admission officers that I can use. Thank you.
Hi Andrew, I'd like to thank you for all the information you share in your channel because it is boosting my confidence towards future interviews. I would like to know your opinion about turning the objective statement into an OFFERING statement; in my case it looks like this: - "Quantity Surveyor Engineer with experience in managing civil engineering projects". Thank you.
Juan, thank you so much for the kind words! Regarding turning the objective statement into an offering statement, I'd rather you turn it into a Career Profile as I outlined in this video on building the ultimate professional resume. It's simply building on the statement you've already started! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RKM_LZ0ujX8.html
Sir if I don't have any real internship or any experience to put what should I put then? Should I do some of the Internships first then apply for jobs?
Hi Komal, highlight whatever capabilities are best in line with the types of jobs you want. It's okay if you don't have any internships. You can leverage part time jobs, school projects and other work you've done where you've gained skills. If you let me know what type of job or field you want to go in, I'll tell you the capabilities to highlight!!
Thank you so much for replying sir. I am looking for analyst profile jobs. Business or research or any such kind of analyst position. And I come from Commerce background.
One thing I find so ironic about this advice is he talks about how the summary example he gave sounds professional but if you click the link in the description box to get the template that provides that example, the remainder of that resume is done using the pronoun "I." It's just I this and I that. Isn't it resume writing 101 that you're not supposed to use pronouns of any kind?
