Building a passive PC isn't easy to begin with but I just complicated my life by ALSO building it in an ITX case with the Noctua NH-P1 and use a passively cooled GPU. What could POSSIBLY go wrong? Well with carefully chosen components and some luck, things might turn out OK.

Wouldn't it be better to make that fan an exhaust?
@Mixa_Lv
@Mixa_Lv 3 года назад
Well, having just an exhaust collects more dust in the system, so if a single intake fan with a dust filter is enough to keep the system cool, I'd choose that because it makes keeping the system clean easier. If you really want to maximize the airflow and you don't mind dusting the system and filters more often, then yeah exhaust is a good option.

I also swapped my brother from a 9700 to 5600x and at the same clock rate on water, the 5600x is happy at 53°C and the the 9700 was at 59°C on load. A 5600x won't require a 150W cooler to keep it cool while a 10400 as an example, runs at 90W or more before you turn off power limits. A 5600x without power limits won't push 95W. Intel is slightly faster at the cost of high heat.

That the fan made it heat up more is pretty fascinating. I think if one puts an empty box on top or some other kind of chimney the convection will do a lot more work. Right now the heated air dissipates into the room, if there is a chimney it will suck cold air in from below.

Fans typically have an RPM where they become audible - I have 3 Noctua case fans in NR200P plus CPU fan and using ITX at sofa distance if I keep them below say 700 RPM for temps up to say 60C then as the 3080ti (undervolted) and PSU both have fan stop and a Zen 3 in ECO mode on a passive B550i the system is inaudible for normal usage but if the GPU gets to 250W+ the fans are there to help. I like to judge things on how quickly the system can cool down from a peak usage - fans supporting a bottom up case airflow really help

For anyone building such a passive cooled PC, You can do it and improve on this but like this it is not so cheap , A direct die contact plug using liquid metal will take you down a few degrees, Thermal Grizzly do one, not sure the price these days, Under voltage of your CPU , you can tweak to get that sweet spot, you can also get a good quality PSU and just remove the fan, be sure that the capacitors are decent and heat sinks are of high copper content, (This is just to save costs as the Seasonic PRIME Fanless is not cheap but you can get that) also you will need a slightly larger case less so about thermals and more about fitting it all in comfortably. you can get more and better heat sinks for ram, motherboard chip sets and GPU , ultimately you want to maximize airflow space and surface area as heat naturally raises and you can make this work to your advantage. I am currently running a custom system of similar design typing this out with a 7800x3D 3050, all with custom heat sinks ect, I range 49-70 temps on load depending on game i almost got to 80 on cyberpunk, the trick is have fun, tweak and enjoy the process GL
@lutrueson9000
@lutrueson9000 7 месяцев назад
sorry just one point of note for PSU this takes in account that your are using a low powered card Eg 75w motherboard powered card, I would not recommend anything too heavy as you may blow capacitors but hey , I think anything is worth experimenting with if you don't mind blowing things up or setting your motherboard on fire but jokes aside think about it and monitor your temps. Have fun it is a good fun project if you go all the way and problem solve your self.

Another potential option for GPU cooling is the Accelero S3, rated at 135W passively and can be attached to whatever. It still wouldn't get you monster performance, and I honestly don't know if it would even fit in that case, but a bigger GPU undervolted to run under 135W should in theory perform much better than a smaller card going ham

If the fan was set to exhaust it would pull air through both heat sinks. Or if the fan was on the top or bottom it would simply assist natural air flow through both heat sinks.
@Grommet2007
@Grommet2007 3 года назад
As a lot of other commenters have suggested, changing the fan's airflow to make it an exhaust fan might produce better results. If possible, I'd also adjust the case orientation so the intake ventilation is at the bottom and the top is a solid panel. I might even go as far as blocking up some of the side ventilation, just to ensure that the fan is actually pulling air through the case, and not just circulating air around the fan. FWIW, my PC's original build was a sort of semi-passive arrangement like that. I had a passive heatsink on the CPU (an i7 4th edition) and the entire PC was cooled by the fan that the case came with (a large fan mounted to the front of the case). The PC performed well for years. And then it started to BSOD at odd random times, but typically some time after I played games on it. Then the BSODs got more and more frequent, until I opened the case and at a whim, reseated the RAM. No more BSODs since. The issue I think was not just heat buildup around the CPU and RAM, but heat VARIATION in that area, with the corresponding expansion / contraction leading eventually to a poor electrical connection. My takeaway from the experience is, not only is it important to keep the temperature below a certain level, it's also important to keep temperature variation to a minimum. So now there's a fan attached to the CPU cooler, and the CPU itself sees temperature variations of up to only 25 degrees C, not the 50~60 degrees C temperature variations that it was previously experiencing with just passive cooling.

You could make a faster GPU passive by putting an NH-P1 on it instead of the stock cooler. You would also need a open-air case to make room for the 2 massive heatsinks.
@andreaskuhn7619
@andreaskuhn7619 3 года назад
You need to place a Fan on the top of the Case.. that would solve your problem. If it Fits use a 140mm low RPM Fan because with a lower RPM you will push even more air with a 140mm than you can do with a 120mm. You may also force the air a little bit more from the bottom instead of using the side panels by using the dust filters. This will cause a dramatic lower GPU temperature without getting the CPU any hotter. ... or you may try to put a fan at the bottom of the case and use a filter - if you are afraid of negative preassure and collecting dust.

Undervolt that GPU for more stable clocks, less frame dips for you

For a better passive GPU i recommend you the Morpheus from Raijintek. You can choose any GPU you want and then set the Morpheus and choose to set fans or not :)

Funny you should mention that. My issue was that at the time I bought (yes, BOUGHT) the GTX 1650, it was the only thing available and I counted myself lucky I could even find a GPU, let alone a passive one!

Yeah, I was about to mention that. Maybe you can do an update video in a few months testing that cooler. If you can fit any long 2,5 slot GPU, you can fit any GPU with the Raijintek cooler (without fans).

Reaally nice. I might be less surprised than some, as I have a somewhat similar biuld. A Louqe S1, with the Palit KalmX 1050Ti (which I will replace with a 1650 Ti someday). It also has the same NightJar PSU. My CPU is an older Ryzen 3200G with the Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 edition cooler, which is dead silent all the time. It has been my media center PC for a few years and is really awesome.

@Garrus Vakarian nice, what cooler do you have on it? Once upon a time I had a 8800GT where I replaced the cooler with and Arctic Accelero, that was actually quite good as well. 🙂

You can get passively cooled Quadro RTX 6000 and 8000s from PNY... But they're designed for datacentres where the rack has plenty of cooling already.

You should try reversing the fan direction you would likely get better temps with that layout ;)

Something I'm kinda curious about is fanless water cooling, i.e. pump, but no fans. Basically, push the heat out to a radiator, then rely on passive cooling for the radiator. I susect it could be quite effective for silent, performant builds... if one could find a passive radiator. I'm not sure anyone actually makes a radiator with sufficient dissipation area to passively cool itself though.

You can attach the fan to the bottom of the heatsink. It'll be in between the GPU and the CPU. Nice animation at 18:50 btw.

try installing the fan in opposite direction. Push the air to side panel vents

If you are indeed going for a hybrid model, why not add the fan at the bottom panel? if there is space, that is.
